Regarding the above. Most cops (one friend was the exception) shoot like Elmer fudd.

I do, but it's my job to... I shoot very well Hill, but I actually go to the range and practice... It helps that the range is right outside my back door;)

I do have a Concealed Weapon Permit, and have had it for about 6 or 7 years, but almost never actually carry. Idaho has some of the more lenient gun laws in the country. Open carry is permitted without a permit, though it rarely occurs in the more populated areas. If memory serves (I'd have to check to be sure), but I think concealed carry is allowed outside of city limits even without a permit.

I live in an area that has a fairly high crime rate due in part to a certain amount of gang activity. I've had a rototiller stolen while I was at home in the evening, and have had patio furniture stolen, literally within spitting distance of the street, in mid-afternoon while I was away. To me, it isn't a far-fetched idea to think that a home invasion robbery is a definite possibility at any time, day or night. So I don't see myself as paranoid to have a .357 in my nightstand at one end of the house, a 9mm in a desk drawer at the other end of the house, and a baseball bat leaning against the wall behind the front door.

I also have a 12 Gage pump shotgun and a .22 rifle. While I do agree with some that a shotgun might be better under some circumstances during a home invasion, they are also less maneuverable, especially in close quarters like a hallway or small room, or if the assailant is close enough for personal contact. Then any kind of long gun is probably going to be more of a disadvantage.

I do have a dog...70 lbs of 14 year old, tail-wagging, slobber drooling, brown-eyed halitosis. There is no doubt that he is a deterrent to people thinking of breaking in. Everyone in the area knows he is here. He loves kids and loves attention, but I have seen people walking down the street cross to the other side of the street in order to stay as far away from him as possible, even when he is just sleeping in the shade. He almost never barks. The exceptions are when a stray dog enters the yard, or at about 7 p.m. every evening when he will have a "conversation" with me to let me know it is time for his treats. However, at his age I'm sure he won't be around much longer and at this point I don't plan on getting another dog. At least not in the near future.

My 12# Miniature Pinscher is an excellent deterrent to people he KNOWS!

I bought my hand gun to practice with when I carried a gun for work. I'm a fair shot, not fantastic (my rounds usually end up low on body mass!!).

A thought occured to me as I'm reading this thread... Is it only the women on here being called paranoid? I'm not going back thru five pages to match "paranoid" lables to the posters, but that's a feeling I get. If that's so, I find that pretty ironic and funny.

I don't know about you but for me it is much easier and more accurate to aim a long barreled weapon from the waist than a hand gun of any kind…Just a slight tendency to shoot high…but who cares if you blow their head off instead of a center shot. It is no less maneuverable and a shotgun in close quarters is a lot more deadly and forgiving and less likely to penetrated walls...And... if they are too close you can club them with it.

BUT... the big advantage is it is nearly impossible for a small child to shoot themselves and less likely that they would be capable of shooting another small child with a long barreled weapon. That is not the case with a hand gun.

No brainer for home defense ...at least in my opinion.

Great post! The role of the police is largely investigation and clean-up. Many police never thwart a crime and that is no fault of their own. In order for the police to protect you from crime, you would have to be assigned your our personal police officer. Common sense.................................................and a Kimber .45........................will do more to protect you from crime than a cop.

Criminals go for any perceived weakness, and there are more men criminals than women criminals, so it's a matter of the reality of the situation more than paranoia, even though that term in proper use actually recognizes such situations as mentioned, despite its improper use as indicating "undue fear."

One of my ex-GF's kept a .38 on her bedside table when we first became involved, and it took me some doing to convince her to move it away from the side nearest the bedroom door and then put it on the undershelf of the side opposite.

I hope I don't have to explain the logic for that here as I did for her.

A subsequent potential partner was telling me about her gun that she kept in her bedroom, and even though I never owned myself I knew enough from my owning acquaintances to ask: "do you keep one in the chamber with the safety on, or the safety off with the chamber empty?" To prevent accidental shootings, etc., as I had been told by others.

She looked quizically and said "I don't know."

We still conversed after that, but end of my pursuit in dating, right there.

You people would be nuts to carry every day to work and shit. I used to when I owned a business but that's the way it was, In fact where I work now I was told specifically not to bring my gun there. OK fuck you, if you get robbed that is your problem. I could shootem and we coulda threw the carcass in a truck, but you would rather let the motherfucker get away with it, I don't care. But really so many people work in offices and shit like that - even in banks !, the people who pack iron there are paid to do it, not you. That doesn't help you out in the parking lots, but really, for that you are better off learning Karate.

And just having that piece really doesn't mean shit. I have been around this shit for a long time. You get some asshole who just bought a gun, if he pulls it on you and he doesn't know what he is doing you got a better than 50/50 chance of taking it away from him. What's more, half the time when you do that you find it was not loaded. These assholes think they can scare you with them.

Five seconds later everything changes. That's why I do not insist my Mother pack iron, because I am not so sure she can hold on to it. But she is in an SUV and I am sure she knows how to use that as an effective weapon. In and out a store there are people around, and she keeps it locked. I guess that'll have to do. A gun in her purse just ain't for her.

And I don't pack except for cetain times, very rare. Fuck the details, but really if we have to have a gun all the time every day, we should move. But when we have the need we should not have to be afraid to do it, or have to explain it to anyone. But I mean if I was invited to a fucking PTA meeting (which I was even though I have no kids) I wouldn't even think about it. Now if I wanted something illegal, or really anything worth a bunch of money, gold or silver, whatever, I would probably holster up. Fucking problem is that I don't wear a belt.

But it is not a common problem. And remember always shoot to kill, and look around after, to see the witnesses, Can you teust them or not, because if not you go to jail. Oh sure, they might let you out, no charges, but it still fucks up the next few days. Just better to get the fuck away. No bullshit.

But no, I wouldn't want to be like a cop, always packing, and therfore having that responsibility. I don't want to watch people. Remember the saying "It wasn't my turn to watch him" ?. Maybe I'll take a turn here and there, but I don't want it all the time. I would rather have a good time.

If I had to pack all the time I would move.

Quickly skimming through this thread, I was struck by the level of fear underlying people's posts.

I'm aware that something in the region of 2 million Americans are in prison - 2,292,133 in 2009 according to wiki - so it's clear that locking people up isn't giving people the sense of security they desire and are entitled to. Nor does it appear from the posts here that high levels of gun ownership are either deterring crime or offering gun owners a real respite.

The US has an incarceration rate (very roughly) 6 times worse than either the UK or Australia. A quick internet search failed to reveal comparative crime stats, yet I can't believe that crime is 6 times worse there than here. The feelings of fear being expressed here are quite alien to me, and I suspect, to residents of the UK too. I don't want to conclude that violence a constant feature of life in the US.

So my question is why do Americans feel so frightened?
