Ooh look, more bad luck - Obamas signature "green" industry is pulling up stakes and moving to China

quote:

Solar Panel Maker Moves Work to China

Evergreen Solar plans to close its main American factory, in Devens, Mass., seen here in September, and lay off 800 workers.

BEIJING — Aided by at least $43 million in assistance from the government of Massachusetts and an innovative solar energy technology, Evergreen Solar emerged in the last three years as the third-largest maker of solar panels in the United States.
Michael El-Hillow, chief executive of Evergreen, said falling prices for panels led to the closing.

But now the company is closing its main American factory, laying off the 800 workers by the end of March and shifting production to a joint venture with a Chinese company in central China. Evergreen cited the much higher government support available in China.

...

Ian A. Bowles, the former energy and environment chief for Gov. Deval L. Patrick, a Democrat who pushed for the solar panel factory to be located in Massachusetts, said the federal government had not helped the American industry enough or done enough to challenge Chinese government subsidies for its industry. Evergreen has received no federal money.

“The federal government has brought a knife to a gun fight,” Mr. Bowles said. “Its support is completely out of proportion to the support displayed by China — and even to that in Europe.”

Full article here

It HAD to have been bad luck that caused this. After all, piss poor planning and far too much time on the golf course couldnt have had anything to do with it.

Could it?

What I think is most revealing in this is that the White House is making it an official trip, rather than a campaign event.  He figures playing the blame game is his daily job description.

The bus is Canadian, btw.  They may get passed through a US coach builder for the special modifications, but it's a Prevost.

If he was going to make it his pet project he should have fed it and watered it and walked it and cleaned up after it

But he neglected it instead and it ran into some bad luck

quote:

Evergreen Solar files for bankruptcy, plans asset sale

Evergreen Solar Inc., the Massachusetts clean-energy company that received millions in state subsidies from the Patrick administration for an ill-fated Bay State factory, has filed for bankruptcy, listing $485.6 million in debt.

Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March and cut 800 jobs, has been trying to rework its debt for months. The cash-strapped company announced today has sought a reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware and reached a deal with certain note holders to restructure its debt and auction off assets.

The Massachusetts Republican Party called the Patrick administration’s $58 million financial aid package, which supported Evergreen’s $450 million factory, a “waste” of money.

FR to Sanity.

Let's see.

If he shut himself in the White House, you'd accuse him of using the "Rose Garden" technique. Or being too chicken to face the public.

If he anted up the support to match China's bid, you'd accuse him of sucking up to businesses that cater to the "global hoax" fanatics. Or providing corporate welfare. Shit, these guys already got $43 million in aid. Would you like the entire industry to be largely funded by the feds, or would that be too communist?

Things are getting really ugly in a lot of ways and we needed some comic relief... its just too bad that this is where were getting  it from, because as good as this comedy is, competent leadership that we can believe in would have been so much better

LMAO
From your own LINK
The Obama administration has been investigating whether China has violated the free trade rules of the World Trade Organization with its extensive subsidies to the manufacturers of solar panels and other clean energy products.

How is this obamas fault?
Chinese manufacturers, Mr. El-Hillow said in the statement, have been able to push prices down sharply because they receive considerable help from the Chinese government and state-owned banks, and because manufacturing costs are generally lower in China.

“While the United States and other Western industrial economies are beneficiaries of rapidly declining installation costs of solar energy, we expect the United States will continue to be at a disadvantage from a manufacturing standpoint,” he said.

Even though Evergreen opened its Devens plant, with all new equipment, only in 2008, it began talks with Chinese companies in early 2009. In September 2010, the company opened its factory in Wuhan, China, and will now rely on that operation.

An Evergreen spokesman said Mr. El-Hillow was not available to comment for this article.

Other solar panel manufacturers are also struggling in the United States. Solyndra, a Silicon Valley business, received a visit from President Obama in May and a $535 million federal loan guarantee, only to say in November that it was shutting one of its two American plants and would delay expansion of the other.

He personally takes credit for Evergreen, thats how

Evergreen Solar Was Hoping to Hire 90 to 100 People for Its Manufacturing Plant. "Evergreen Solar, the Marlborough-based maker of solar panels, also is hoping to hire 90 to 100 people at a manufacturing plant in Devens, said Gary Pollard, vice president of human resources. The plant, which opened last summer, is expected to employ more than 800 when it reaches full capacity." [Boston Globe, 3/6/09]

Oh how soon we forget all the long flowery speeches about his wonderful trillion dollar stimulus programs and his green jobs initiatives and his laser-like focus on jobs, blah blah blah, yada yada yada

Forgot about them as soon as the empty meaningless rhetoric left his lips apparently

His energy czar and his green jobs czar must be napping on the job, judging by the numbers and the news stories eh

Just when you thought his luck couldnt get any worse:

quote:

Obama's Weekly Job Approval at 40%, Lowest of Administration

Obama drops to 39% Aug. 11-13, lowest three-day average to date

PRINCETON, NJ -- President Obama's job approval rating dropped to 40% during the week spanning Aug. 8-14, the lowest weekly average of his administration. During this period, Obama's three-day rolling average also hit a new low of 39% for Aug. 11-13, the first such average below 40% since he took office, though it recovered to 41% for Aug. 12-14.

Implications

Although the new lows in Obama's job approval rating represent only a slight drop from his previous low readings, they symbolically underscore the weaker position the president is in as he begins a "listening tour" of the Midwest this week.

Ten incumbent presidents have sought re-election since World War II, and none has won a second term with final pre-election job approval ratings below 48%. The last two presidents who lost their re-election bids -- George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter -- had job approval ratings in the 30% range in the fall of the election year. Thus, Obama's challenge is not only to move his rating back above 40%, but also to push it close to or above 50%.

There is some tongue-in-cheek, but what I posted captures the moment effectively

He is using multimillion dollar taxpayer funded buses for his reelection bid, he is preaching against trucks and SUVs (that a lot of people need) while he is enjoying that luxury bus ride, he is assigning blame for the economy, and he did claim to have turned the economy around until "bad luck" hit.

Damnit Sanity, you KNOW that Mr. Obama's problem is racism! How could you possibly forget?

I like the following paragraph from your second link, it made me chuckle as I remembered the treatment George W. Bush received - pretty funny stuff!

quote:

Here's DeWayne Wickham in yesterday's USA Today: "This total lack of respect is downright contemptible--if not unpatriotic. Such contempt, I'm convinced, is rooted in something other than political differences. . . . The presence of Jim Crow, Jr.--a more subtle form of racism--is there."
