Taking YOU out of the equation Hannah.

Prostitution is a perfectly viable career choice ... ish. The way it is handled in many societies is more about abuse and taking advantage than it is about work. So many other factors are often at play (race, socio-economic factors, age, geography, addiciont, etc) that it is sometimes the only option for some people. When you are starving, you will eat dirt.

The problem with prostitution as it is utilized in this day and age is the Puritan values that interfere with the sex industry (not just in the USA, but "Puritan" is a good word).

Prostitution these days as I've seen it is ugly and harmful.set up. Working in mental health, you see quite a lot of it. But it is a skewed, self-selecting group (or court-selecting really). However, there are other levels of prostitution rather than just street hooker / drug addict or professional LV prostitute. There are many average gals "helping" fellows along. There are women who see it as a positive thing and do it so for people who are not able to be involved with someone and to get a little cash for themselves.

So ... to answer your questions. Prostitution is not about integrity. Prostitution is often about poverty. Poor people sometimes have to make decisions that wealthier people are not faced with. That is what I find questionable.

Things in the states are very different. Of the women arrested for prostitution, 22% have AIDs, around half have some STD from the paper I cited earlier. Again, these are women who are on the lower end of the pay scale for prostitution. It's clear that there is far more criminal activity associated with prostitution in the US than in Europe. Furthermore, I agree with your comment on the sex lives of "vanilla" women- of the women I've dated, all have been a bit more adventurous than simply missionary- I think that went out a number of years ago. Kids today are more likely to experiment orally first, and the taboo of anal also seems to be falling by the wayside based on some study I read a couple of years ago.

I don't necessarily think being a prostitute means you have no integrity. I don't think it should be illegal either. They should legalize it and then have a data base or something where all known prostitutes have to get STD checked on a regular basis. Hopefully that would reduce a lot of crimes against prostitutes, and make it safer transmittable disease wise for those who wish to use one.

Sam, that is the US, but Hannah is in Canada where prostitution is also legal. One of the great advantages of legalized prostitution is that it is safer for all people concerned, you can have health checks and you remove the need for pimps, instead of wasting police man power to hunt them, it takes less man power and money to regulate it or check that the rules aren't broken, plus they pay tax.

That may work in Europe and possibly Canada, but I'm not sure what happens in Las Vegas counts as a ringing endorsement for the legalization of prostitution. There's a lot of crime associated with the profession in the US.

Actually Europe changed it's view on the legalization over the last couple of decades (depending from country to country earlier or later) and almost every country noticed that it was easier to keep a lid on the crime and that pimps were made obsolete... Btw prostitution in LV is still illegal, you mean that small part of Nevada where there is the BunnyRanch?

while it is legal, it is just barely fucking so, the cops regularly run you out of a given neighbourhood <get lost or we'll beat the shit out of you>, brothels are illegal, it isn't recognized as a real job, so you don't qualify for unemployment. it isn't at all like in europe, it is pretty much like the states, except that it isn't actually illegal to trade sex for money. it is illegal, however, to solicit sex for money, or in legal parlance to "communicate for the purposes of prostitution", just not to actually do it. every once in a while some city politician will get on their high horse and they'll do a sweep and round up all the girls and johns they can, charge them with communicating, and have most of the girls let go and the johns fined. then they pretty much leave you alone till the next fucking holy-roller comes along.

so like i said, not actually illegal, but just barely legal, more of a legal limbo than anything else.
