Here's the fiscal responsibility of a known medicare fraudster...

http://www.wftv.com/news/28908436/detail.html

quote:

DCF said it has been referring applicants to clinics where drug screenings cost between $30 and $35. The applicant pays for the test out of his or her own pocket and then the state reimburses him if they test comes back negative.

Therefore, the 38 applicants in the Central Florida area, who tested negative, were reimbursed at least $30 each and cost taxpayers $1,140.

Meanwhile, the state is saving less than $240 a month by refusing benefits to those two applicants who tested positive.

9 Investigates first uncovered evidence in June that a similar program in Idaho also cost more than it saved.

All of this backed by people who want smaller government

they were just so positive that welfare people are all drug addicts, they knew it HAD to work.
pfft.

Yeah, so the tests pay for themselves after 5-6 months. Sound pretty responsible to me when 1/2 of those on welfare at any time are likely to be on it for 60 months or more.

yawwwwwwwnlikely isnt good enough ,
you have stock in drug testing kit companies?

This is nothing new.New York state has been drug testing people for welfare for a couple of years now.The difference bewteen Florida and New York is this.If someone does fail a drug test, they are given the option of treatment. Now,if that person refused treatment, then they do get cut off. However,at least they get the option to seek help.Floridas way is basically throwing someone out without anyway to defend themselves.I would think these are the people who need the help the most.

Incorrect. If they fail in Fla they have the ability to have payments made to a responsible 3rd party if their are children involved.

FR--

They're a waste of time for general employment, too.  The false positive rate is usually higher than the rate for a true positive.

Ehrenreich had some industry numbers that showed it cost about $7000 per person accurately positive since you're spending money testing so many people that are pissing clean; for a piss test, you can be a stone alcoholic, use MDMA, GHB (and other club drugs), hallucinogens, meth/crank/ice/speed, opiates, barbituates, etc. and they will clear your body within 72 hours.  Smoke a joint and you'll test positive for weeks to a month because THC's fat soluble.

If you're really worried about public safety due to drug use, have your employees do a short reaction time test.  Shit, I'd fail that if I had a migraine, which is why I try not to drive with one.

The real goal is "Punish the Sinners", and that's part-and-parcel with the republican religion...

I had friends who were working as welders and fitters during the construction of a nuclear power plant.  Every day there was a group that wandered the job site randomly collecting workers and testing them for a list of things.

I also have a wonderful idea. How about the Governor of Florida and every lawmaker here have to pass a drug test themselves? How does that sound?Amazing they didn't force themselves to get drug tested even though these same are leeching off the taxpayer more than anyone.

I'd test positive simply because I went back on my psych meds last week. I also take a controlled substance for migraines. I better hope I never have to go back on any forms of public assistance.

If you can prove that the meds you take were prescribed by a physician you could not be rejected based on a positive drug test.
I've had drug testing for jobs and I take migraine medication and occasionally sleeping pills.  The company called the doc, she said she prescribed them and I was hired.

I know this, it is just a lot of hassle to go through. Already, I've seen the welfare office make applicants jump through hoops to get $205 a month. Who can live on that??? And I'm talking about able bodied people, I'm talking about people who have applied for and not received social security being told they would have find a way to live on that amount until they get social security. And then when they do get social security, they are expected to pay back the welfare funds they'd received.

tazzygirl -> RE: Drug Testing Welfare applicants proven waste of money.... (8/20/2011 8:49:57 PM)

And then when they do get social security, they are expected to pay back the welfare funds they'd received.

Exactly.  No one wants to discuss that part.  All those people who are "mooching" off the system end up having to pay back the system that is fucking them over to begin with.

Termyn8or -> RE: Drug Testing Welfare applicants proven waste of money.... (8/20/2011 9:04:33 PM)

What if they ALL test positive, or refuse the test ?

Starve ? Live on the street ? I would've told them flat out I don't have the thirty bucks. I needed it. For bills.

Cut me off then.

If anyone had any fucking balls this planet would be alot better place.

T^T

DeviantlyD -> RE: Drug Testing Welfare applicants proven waste of money.... (8/20/2011 9:18:25 PM)

At 30 bucks a test, these aren't chain of custody testing methods. So anyone could bring in a "clean" urine to substitute for their own. I'm not saying that is what's happening, but I don't doubt it has happened.

Those who have gone through pre-employment testing or random testing for their job would go through a chain of custody collection. So that is a different means of collection than what the welfare types have to do.

tazzygirl -> RE: Drug Testing Welfare applicants proven waste of money.... (8/20/2011 9:29:42 PM)

No, they are imperfect tests given by imperfect testing means with the intent to deny people assistance.

I would say that likely for the majority, this is true. But I also know people like my cousin, who shouldn't be receiving assistance because she can and should work instead of her preference for sitting on her lazy fat ass and occasionally smoking pot.
