DeviantlyD -> Moammar Gadhafi's sons arrested (8/21/2011 5:08:43 PM)

Frick! Dr. Sanjay Gupta's special is being pre-empted by all this coverage of Moammar Gadhafi's sons being arrested. Hey, I'm all for having that regime toppled, but can't they report this stuff later? *whines*

On a side note, it always cracks me up how the British pronounce Gadhafi's name "kah-daffy". :P

Any resemeblance to real seriousness, living or dead, is purely by the reader who has no sense of humour. :D

10 min 51 sec ago - Libya Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr is in Green Square:
"There's a party in the Libyan capital tonight. The people are in charge of the city. They've decided the square is now called Martyr's Square, the original name/.

"They're shouting "we're free" and shooting at a poster of Gaddafi."

Wow. I hope this means an end to the fighting. This has been such a terrible ordeal.

I agree with you LadyAngelika. It sounds like it's still very early yet, but promising.

OK.

You have called out the wrong person on the sense of humourage thing here, and you will be resplinded to accordionly.

Whatever your dehevent or domicilic intentions, there is no way I am going to stand for such low and subterranian stultifying instults as you are attenting to preposition everybody here with herewith.

Calling the great Lyberian leader "Daffy Duck," (I saw you says it, got the drugs for it back it up, just call the pharmacist), is a trammely of Domesticy, or Demonstrocity, or something like that.

When will this incessant insouciance ever end?

Laugh all you want but it actually starts with a Q. You pronounce a Q how now ?

YOU misspell it.

T^T

HannahLynHeather -> RE: Moammar Gadhafi's sons arrested (8/21/2011 10:00:51 PM)

not quite termy.

quote:

The explanation, you may have read, is due to discrepancies transliterating Arabic. While true, this is not the whole story. Gaddafi (Google's most frequent spelling) is spelled القذافي in Arabic. The first letter "ق," qoph, is pronounced as a "k" sound and usually transliterated as a "q." Likewise, the second letter of his name, thal, "ذ," is pronounced as a deep "d" or "th" ("the" not "with") and transliterated "dh." Given these standardized spellings, the Libyan leader's name should be spelled "Qadhafi."

The reason the most common spelling of Gaddafi begins with a "g" is due to the Libyan dialect, which pronounces qoph like a "g" sound. English translations of Arabic leaders names generally are consistent with their local dialects, rather than standard translation. The best example of this would be late Egyptian leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser. His first name beginning with a jim "‫ج‬" would be traditionally transliterated Jamal. Instead, the Egyptian pronunciation of his name is the norm for English transliteration.

so it would seem that both are right.

It does not start with a Q, with a G, or with a K.  It starts with an Arabic letter.  His name gets translated phonetically to English and the spelling is inconsistent as a result.

Termyn8or -> RE: Moammar Gadhafi's sons arrested (8/21/2011 10:11:36 PM)

DS, cool, but it was a Q for over ten years and now it has changed. Now if they send a summons to my house and it says Dermyna8or, what the fuck you think I am going to do ?
