I think one would have to have a personality disorder to want to fake a personality disorder. Yes I KNOW how that sounds.

Sybil wasn't even a real multiple system.  She has another disorder but her psych wanted to write a book, so she made Sybil say she had MPD.  That's one of the reason MPD/DID is so controversial.  The argument is that it isn't "real" and that well-meaning but misguided psychs plant false memories and such.

I cannot imagine my friend Amy ever behaving in any sort of 'excuse' type of manner. She doesn't even really acknowledge that there is a difference. Or she will just brush it off as she was "being a pussy the other night" and moto on with the more aggressive personality traits, while retreating from any emotional intimacy the pussy her, was sharing in.

If someone is never going to live outside of an institution, what meaning has their life ?

That depends on the individual case. I suspect that some or many can have worthwhile lives in an institution. They may develop as artists or artisans or scientists or teachers.

This person, however, appears to be a potential extreme danger to all other people and it may be impossible to treat the dangerous aspect of his mind. He may be a disaster waiting to happen.

I was reading on wikipedia about the various controversies and saying that therapists made it up. (remember Satanist Ritual Kidnapping? yeah) When we're talking about how someone processes reality, how do we even gauge it to know what's "real"?

I saw this docco on a little girl who was schizophrenic from birth, evidently--creepiest thing EVER was watching this baby watching things that were NOT there to our eyes. When she got language, she was able to speak quite clearly about who/what she was seeing. At least someone dissociating knows (or do they?) that it's all pieces of themselves in there.

Not always.  If they do, it's usually after YEARS of therapy and misdiagnosis.  Even then, they may not consider their insiders as pieces of a whole.  The systems I know consider each insider a distinct and unique individual with his/her/xir own goals, preferances and motivations.

"The may develop as artists or artisans or scientists or teachers. "

Now how the hell is that going to happen ? People fly ten thousand miles to go to school and these people are lucky not to be strapped to the bed. (this really IS off topic discussion huh) What's next, police officer training in prisons ?

I just don't think it likely. If you know of any cases in which someone actually did get a degree for example, in a mental ward I would like to hear about it. I HAVE heard of it happening in prison on occasion, but not in a mental institution.

Syl-- Cripes! What a mess.

Why does the "and" show up as asterisks? anyway, ETfix odd punctuation and replace it with other odd punctuation.

No joke.  I spent many months educating myself on the nuances of multiple systems when I was dating someone who claimed to be multiple.  I even joined a discussion list on Topica dedicated to multiples and got to talk to a lot of people about it.  That's how I made friends with a couple of systems.

it's real. read this thread for a little insight, it starts out on schizophrenia, but gets into mpd/did/whatever right near the end on page 10, but the whole thing is worth reading. it's probably one of the best fucking threads i have ever seen anywhere online. heather cried when she read it - she's such a softie. :)

I personally knew a girl in college that was a true MPD and she had at one time something like 8 personalities and had integrated all but 2 by the time we met. It's a very real and valid albeit rare condition. It doesn't however typically manifest in extremes of violence, though varying alters may be say more lewd, or prone to criminal behavior. You have a lot going on with this kid.

Another possilibility and I'm sure I'll raise the controversy here, is that it could in fact be possession. However, if that is the case, you would typically see some supernatural phenoma, things like spontaneous bruising/scratches, speaking in other languages, telekinesis and the like. I know this isn't widely believed in, but I have encountered situations that warrant the consideration that it's possible. Whether you want to take the stance that these would be archetypes or another psychological mechanism or a true "demon" or "evil spirit" in my mind is irrelevant if for practical purposes treatment through exorcism by a qualified priest or shaman was performed.

In both cases, whether dealing with psychiatrists or theologians, realize, that the potential for having a good or bad practitioner, is always an adjunct problem of its own. Psychology and psychiatry still have a long way to go as sciences.

It's a tragic case for sure.

I read that article about the girl who was schizophrenic from birth also.  It was horrifying what she and her parents were going through.  My brother was like them.  Trying to do the right thing in an impossible situation.

I believe it...exists...

Had a brother mentally ill, there were times he would speak out in a voice that was not his...it was very scarey.

The poor guy delt with it and lived with it all his life then was found dead at 50...

I know he was heavily sedated on all sorts of drugs...

What I witnessed at times was soooooooooooooo sad, and all he wanted was for his family to love and support him...what every human wants...

All that crap being said...I do believe some people are full of demonic forces, brought on not by nor from their own doings...

<shrugs and slips away>

You know what Winne said was so true...HOW FUCKING SAD...hopefully at somepoint in his life there will be a person he can connect to and learn to trust so he does not have to live being tormented that ....way.

Miricles do...happen.

My nephew just turned 11, so it is hard to say what kind of life he may have in an institution.  He is in a children's facility now and they would love to get rid of him.  He is too much for them to handle, he actually escaped one time.
He may end up having as good a life as he possibly can in whatever institution he ends up in.  He certainly can't have a life anywhere else, except possibly prison.  He wets his pants about 5 times a day, and asking him to change his clothes is the trigger for a meltdown.  The local school system can't control him, so they don't want him in school.  He is also extremely cruel to his sister, who went through the same thing he did with their animal of a mother.

You should read And I Don't Want To Live This Life.  It's a memoir written by Nancy Spungen's (Sid and Nancy) mother, Deborah.  According to her account, Nancy was probably schizophrenic from birth.  She was born cyanotic and Deborah speculates the brain damage led to schizophrenia.

I've known someone with an alter.  I've researched this some.  Since he was sexually abused as a child, I went to MaleSurvivor.org and learned quite a bit.  One of the men there with alters sent me to read "Fractured Mind" by Robert Oxnam.  Very helpful book.

As for what triggers him, various things, but he never gets violent.  Just submissive.

There is no such thing.

It is about one or more aspects of a person's mind manifesting in a non-integrated way. Yes, such an aspect may be evil.

Lord have mercy how did I miss that............I don't even know how to think about it. The things people do to children that would force the brain to go to that amount of effort to survive..... It is just........I don't know......too much
