Sure you would.......and that is why Ron Paul would be the ruination of us all.

MusicalBoredom -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 8:33:36 AM)

I agree DYB. The private insurance industry could have worked but they have just proven to be too greedy so they drop people as soon as it affects profits.  A public insurance, such as you mention, would adjust rates to make sure than what came in was enough to fund what was being paid but without the profit being added to it. The insurance companies have had 50 years to get it right and they have failed.  Before Obama was president nobody that I knew has satisfied with their insurance company.  Suddenly when the president came up with a plan to fix it, half of the country lost their mind.  Of course they were buying into the 100s of millions spent by the insurance industry in PR trash.  If you were an insurance company would you send the message that said "Hey, we don't want this because we'll loose a bunch of money that you give us" or would their message be "The president is a socialist and trying to take away your rights" -- I think the later.

Ron Paul would return the Hill-Burton standard.   Which in effect would be bad for HMOs.    Just because you cant imagine a better way of health care- does not mean it does not exist.
Google Hill-Burton.

Not liking Ron Paul is racist.     He is a DOCTOR who delivered 4000 babies, he is from Pennsylvania... a distinguished member of congress- with a 30 year voting record.

And, as you've found out policies are tighter, benefits less. Companies routinely change the change the benefits/rules of a job without any notification or ability to negotiate. So we have the most fucked up , expensive, wasteful system in the world....

Hill-Burton Free and Reduced-Cost Health Care In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility’s area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but about 200 health care facilities nationwide are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care.Steps to Apply for Hill-Burton Free or Reduced-Cost Care1. Find the Hill-Burton obligated facility nearest you from the list of Hill-Burton obligated facilities.
2. Go to the facility's admissions or business office and ask for a copy of the Hill-Burton Individual Notice. The Individual Notice will tell you what income level makes you eligible for free or reduced-cost care, what services might be covered, and exactly where in the facility to apply.
3. Go to the office listed in the Individual Notice and say you want to apply for Hill-Burton free or reduced-cost care. You may need to fill out a form.
4. Gather any other required documents (such as a pay stub to prove income eligibility) and take or send them to the obligated facility.
5. If you are asked to apply for Medicaid, Medicare, or some other financial assistance program, you must do so.
6. When you return the completed application, ask for a Determination of Eligibility. Check the Individual Notice to see how much time the facility has before it must tell you whether or not you will receive free or reduced-cost care.

How much longer will the USA fail to take care of its own citizens basic needs? What kind of message about the USA does this send out to the rest of the world?

When will people in the USA learn personal responsbility?
And who gives a fuck what message the rest of the world, which is going broke faster than the US, thinks? Especially a bunch of marsupial fuckers.

Personal responsibilty has nothing to do with it.

It's about the best use of our tax dollars.

Should they benefit the people that pay them or be used for wars and foreign aid?

I agree DYB. The private insurance industry could have worked but they have just proven to be too greedy so they drop people as soon as it affects profits.  A public insurance, such as you mention, would adjust rates to make sure than what came in was enough to fund what was being paid but without the profit being added to it.

umm,.. public insurance really depends.. Canada has health care but there but people do fall between the cracks there. One guy in BC needed a heart operation, he was on the list, he travelled to Vancouver and then told no, he was bumped by someone that was an emergency. So he went back home and waited, then he travelled again and was in the hospital but too late, he died there waiting. Another couple from BC, he needed a heart operation,.. on the list. But they thought his condition was a higher priority than the public health care system thought. So rather than leave his fate in public hands, they took a mortgage out on their home, he paid $50,000 in the US and that was out of his own pocket as the public health care system will not reimburse him. [8|]

So, imo, a prudent person will self insure, like buying a second house and renting it out, let your tenants pay it off, then when you are older and need the $ and if the public health care fails you, its there. The last 3 years of a persons life tend to be the most expensive (nursing home, etc), at least that is what i have read.. And yeah, private insurance too but I personally dont trust them to help when I need it.. loopholes,.. lots of loopholes.. [>:]

MusicalBoredom -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 10:38:33 AM)

I think that's where the US has been stuck for my whole life.  Politicians can't come up with a perfect system so nothing gets done.  Having money to fall back on if things don't work well is a great idea but that's not the same as self insurance.  There is no way a young couple can self insure their way though a young child with cancer for example.

I'm not sure what the big deal on everyone having a public health insurance policy. To me it seems like paying for fire and police protection.  Most people's house never catches on fire but some of their taxes go to pay for the department.  Those that want more fire protection pay for sprinklers or alarm monitoring or any number of things.  Seems to me that health care should be the same. Everyone pays into the system and everyone benfits.  We don't have to keep track of each dollar amount each person pays and receives in benefit anymore than we do for the fire department.  People would still be able to purchase additional insurance from a private provider to cover private rooms or some odd uncovered treatment or whatever they choose to write policies for.

Here people sound like little children.  "It's not Fair!!!! I paid $5 and they only paid $1 and they got $2 worth of services."

Iamsemisweet -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 10:42:23 AM)

Sorry, I wouldn't want to live next door to that either.  Which is not to say I don't think people are entitled to basic needs, like health care.  I have more than enough experience with private insurance companies to know that they are in it to make money for their shareholders, NOT benefit their policy holders.  It has become standard practice to deny claims initially, even valid ones, in the hopes that the claimant will just go away.  Do we really want companies like that making our health care decisions for us?   They love to collect premiums, they hate paying claims.

So do carry your Alberta social insurance card and get extra insurance or have you thrown caution to the wind and are dealing with the US system
