Even the life span figures for the US are inflated by way of these very expensive procedures and surgeries and drug and other chemo treatments that oftentimes 'sustain life' to the extent of making the last three to five years (or longer) of that life actually quite torturous for the unfortunate patient, while being immensely profitable to the industry.

Nobody forces anyone to buy the treatment. and life span figures for the US are understated due to greater prevalence of at-risk pregancies and larger than average accidental death and murder rates than many Western nations.

I don't claim to fully understand why any one would try to defend the current healthcare system in the US. Paying twice as much as everyone else and getting a lot less isn't a good deal no matter which way you cut it.

However, if I leave aside the sheer stupidity of it, I'm beginning to admire the unswerving dedication with which apologists of the US system rip themselves (and the rest of their fellow citizens) off. If only they devoted such energy and devotion to bettering the health system instead of defending the parasitic profits of the healthcare companies, the US would certainly be a far better place.

Sadly if people can't see that this an area where self interest and altruism coincide, that's not going to happen. If 'enlightened self-interest' doesn't triumph in this area, it's not going to be much use in any other area. And Americans will continue to die needlessly in their tens of thousands annually ........

Yawn ...

OK, let's go down the usual list here.

Nobody forces anyone to take a plane, nobody fores anyone to drive a car, nobody forces anyone to have a job, nobody forces anyone to buy groceries, nobody forces anyone to eat ...

Nobody forces you to repeatedly make a complete ass of yourself, Wilbe, but being ever the go-getter that you are ...

And yeah, trying to argue how the US' health care is so advanced by way of pointing out the third-world status on infant mortality and accidental deaths and murder rates might seem a bit ironic to some.

Just saying.

As usual...unmitigated bullshit. Nobody forces you to live either ?

So we can expect you to just voluntarily depart this world should such an illness afflict you ? Hardly !! You'll gladly spend every dime of other people's money to stay alive and sure enough, the first thing on your form will be Medicare.

Life in the US has been extended to within 3-4 years of the rest of the west exclusively because of medicare. Life expectancy is a simple mathematical question and cannot be under or over stated. People are born, people die...do the math and you have life expectancy.

Accidents and murder rates are all over the world and also reflect a nation's values. The US values are for money and those last few years of ours lives, no matter how long or short are come hell or high water...going to be a profit.

Come on kinkroids...use your fucking heads. You can risk your life on the job. Be blown off an oil well, die in a coal mine cave-in all the while you were making good money and paying 35% federal tax. YES THIRTY FIVE PERCENT FEDERAL TAX.

OHHHH but in AMERICA and her great values, if I risk my money...OBVIOUSLY something much, much more important (valuable) than YOUR LIFE, I pay 15% federal tax. In a nutshell...in America...you WILL work longer, pay more and DIE YOUNGER.

What is it about Americans that they show such distrust for govt. yet let [it] of the hook...virtually all of the time.

Referring to Dr. Sanjay Gupta's medical news story, how do you explain Cuba having one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world at 1/14th the cost of the USA?

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-20099732-10391704.html
(CBS/AP) Where is it best to be a baby? Not the U.S. Babies born here are more likely to die during the first month of life than babies born in Cuba, Poland, and dozens of other countries, a new study says.

"It's not that things are worse in the United States than before," said Dr. Joy Lawn, a pediatrician in South Africa. "It's that the U.S. isn't making progress like other countries."

The newborn death rate in the U.S. is now 4.3 per 1,000 live births. Because of improvements in infant care in some countries, newborns in Qatar, Croatia and the United Arab Emirates now die at about the same rate.

What's killing the world's babies? The study cited three primary causes: premature birth, asphyxia and severe infections. Each problem can easily be prevented with proper care.

Maybe oh I dunno, universal healthcare might be helpful.....
