rml, zephy.... consider the source.  you are both definitely wasting your keystrokes on that one.

lol, I know Tazzy, I was only directing my comment to rml. If I want a head injury from banging my head against the wall, I'll try to get the docs I work for to only dictate for the department I work for

Its often said... you shouldnt forget the past, lest we repeat those mistakes.

They already eat cake, I'm lucky if I get a crumb or two. [>:]

~Fast Reply~

I understand how it sucks that this woman couldn't work anymore and so lost her insurance. Couple of things though. She is legally entitled to Cobra insurance, and it doesn't mention that she has applied for medicare or medicaid, both which she would be eligible for due to the cancer. She says "we" when talking about how the garage sale was set up. So obviously, she isn't alone. Why not rent a booth at a flea market? Since there is a "we" she has the help to do it.

I know it isn't the popular opinion, but the area she lives in has a law about how many garage sales you can have, so she can't do it. There are other options for her to sell her things and make money. There is using flea markets, online selling. I'm sure her municipality has other laws that people don't like either, like not being able to leave cars up on blocks in the front yard, when you are able to put your trash out for trash day and must bring your cans from the curb.

I'm sorry that she is sick, but really, that doesn't mean she gets to circumvent her local laws. Not unheard of for local fire departments to try to help raise money for sick residents or anything else.

We hear stories of "so and so lost their health insurance," but it never talks about them applying for medicare or medicaid which would help their situations. If they are too proud to apply for help, then I don't have a lot of compassion for them wanting to do things like have garage sales to raise the money.

As far as I can tell, Oregon Medicaid only covers Breast and Cervical cancers.

Oregon Breast and Cervical Cancer Program The Oregon Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) provides free screening services for breast and cervical cancer for eligible Oregon residents. Eligible women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer may be eligible for free health coverage through Medicaid for treatment of their condition. · The BCCP provides qualified Oregon residents with free screenings for breast and cervical cancer. Women screened through this program and diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer may be eligible for free coverage through Medicaid. · In order to be eligible for screening through the BCCP, you must meet age and income guidelines and insurance requirements. You must be between the age of 40 and 64 for most services; however, men and women under the age of 40 may be eligible for some breast cancer screening services. In addition, you must be uninsured or underinsured and have an income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. · For more information, please call the Oregon Department of Human Services at (800) 422-6012 or the Oregon Health Services Breast and Cervical Cancer Program at (877) 225-7070 or visit their website http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/bcc/index.shtml.

tazzy, you are only reading about one type of program. Medicare and Medicaid are federal programs. Anyone who meets the eligibility requirements will qualify and receive medicaid. Most cancers would qualify someone for Social Security Disability and the services attached to it.

My point is that if someone is too proud to apply for these programs, for whatever reason, then I don't believe it is reasonable to expect your neighbors or anyone else to bend over backwards allowing you to have a permanent garage sale or violate any other municipal ordinances because you can't pay the bill. Not to mention applying for charity care with the hospital. I have had to apply for charity care to have certain health issues addressed, and don't have pity for people who don't attempt to access all of their options and then want people to feel sorry for them.

Medicaid is federally funded, but ran by the state.  Each state has their own rules.

Question here.

How would have this thread proceeded if I had posted it- and was all upset over the NWO govt strong arming her?

Y'all want centralized control-  and here it is.  The law says 3 garage sales a year... these are orders from on high.

So how is it different  being that someone else started this thread?

tazzygirl -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 7:05:18 PM)

Read the article, pahunk.  Someone is actually looking in to allowing her to run more.

pahunkboy -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 7:20:18 PM)

It would have been helpful to know the dates that she already had a sale.

This is end of August- so they could have gone on for months.  Look at the tents closely.

Single-payer, publicly funded universal health insurance.

Anything else is a joke. It's the only thing that works.

A-fucking-men.

God Hunky sometimes you are such an asshole. She's doing it because she can't afford treatment for cancer. How about you take your head out of your ass and try having some compassion.

I think that his point is valid. It is not the health care system doing this. It is the regulatory system. The same regulatory system that won't let seven year olds have Lemonade stands.
Horseshit.

I am baffled as to why folks even bother responding to the psycho-fucks. It's not as though they are going to convince RO, etc. that a cloaked Klingon ship DID NOT crash into WTC 7.

I am thoroughly disgusted with the "Pay Per View" US Healthcare system.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 8:49:40 PM)

Zoning laws can't be enforced selectively. That would be a violation of the 14th amendment. Also, can anyone seriously say they would like a garage sale going on next door to them for week after week? The neighbors have rights, too.
I doubt thus woman is making enough doing this to pay for her treatments. Maybe someone will be inspired enough by the article to reach out and help her, this can't be her best alternative.
I agree with those who think a single payer system is the way to go. But once the republicans convinced the american people that it was "socialist", that possibility was over.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 9:17:13 PM)

I don't know enough about Oregon state or federal indigent programs to say. I am hoping that someone who does will try to help. OR used to have a pretty good low income health safety net, I don't know if they still do.

LafayetteLady -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 9:44:19 PM)

States can make rules only to a point. It is not a matter of the federal government saying "here is a chunk of money for medicare/medicaid, use it how you see fit." They have rules the states must adhere to as well.

Regardless, the point is that there is nothing in this article about the woman seeking any kind of help when losing her insurance, why she doesn't have Cobra coverage, only that she has cancer and so decided to have garage sales to make money to help cover the costs. A lot of information is missing in that regard. The writer of the article wants the reader to feel sorry for this woman having cancer and being told to shut down her garage sale. Personally, if she was unable to get charity care, disability or medicaid, the article would make me feel bad for her. As written, I feel bad she has cancer, but not that she can't conduct a business in her back yard.

outhere69 -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/24/2011 10:10:38 PM)

Maybe because COBRA is very expensive, especially if you already had cancer. If she's out of work, how could she afford it anyway?

I know that if you qualify for Social Security disability, you have to wait 18 months to get Medicaid. You're only hope of a faster approval is to see if you qualify for a compassionate exception.
