See that is where you've got it wrong. I may not be denied but there is a bill waiting for me when I am done. And, they expect payment. If they don't get payment...guess what...your on your way to the poor house.  I can't stress the differences enough. When you decide to leave a job in Canada you don't even think about health insurance. If you have a pre-existing condition in the US....you are staying put cause the next job ..you won't get coverage. In this way Canadians are much more free than Americans

Its a freedom all taxpaying Canadians pay for. We pay for it in our taxes and in some provinces monthly fees in addition as well. I dont know the exact amount but i recall reading that about 1/3 or so of what people pay in tax to the province goes to support health care there. So Canadians do pay, its just spread out year after year for their entire tax paying life. So, imo, its like buying private medical insurance is in the US, just in Canada its thru the govt.

It also only pays for the basics, if you need a Chiropractor that is out of your pocket, if you need glasses, dental work, prescription meds, etc, you pay that yourself. If you are on welfare (or a senior I think?) then you get those things covered. And there are long wait times for some procedures which add to the stress, especially as I mentioned before for something like heart procedures, etc. Some things are funded in one province but not another. There was one family, their child needed special help due to something like autism but BC didnt cover the $80,000/yr cost but Alberta did. The father was a scientist of some sort and had to quit his job and move his family to Alberta, he did what he had to do, if not his child either would not have gotten the help at all or it would have come out of his own pocket. Again, falling thru the cracks, and he was lucky that Alberta covers that or he would have been in the same shape as if he lived in the US.

You know, you can always apply to immigrate to Canada if you wish.. [:)]

I have tried that in the past. It isn't that easy immigrating to Canada. I got kicked back across the border in 1994

How the fuck would you know? Somehow I doubt Alex has anything to say about Canada - well nothing that isn't a conspiracy theory anyway and that's where you get your info.

On my visit to Canada - the people were polite and reserved- not in your face.  He is from Chicago-  it would be hard to not use the verbose boisterous mode.  As it will not be well received in CA.

Sure he would like to be there-  but he would have to make an effort to get along with the locals.

We see it here all the time- folks come in from NJ and want to make US INTO NJ.

CA does not want to be Chicago-   or even the USA.

...unless that has changed....

well, maybe you should have tried it like that crazy Randy Quaid did....[8|]

You could have met and married a nice Canadian girl (umm.. or nice Canadian guy since thats legal there), my brother married a Filipino girl and she moved to Canada.. He met her online, he went there and married her, didnt even tell my mother until he got back and she saw the ring on his finger and asked about it.. course they had to go thru the process of waiting for her immigration status to be approved..

or you could get a job with a company in the US that has subsidiaries in Canada and get an inter-company transfer...

Hunky there are "in your face" people here just like there are reserved people there. We aren't all the same, there's a great mix.

How much longer will the USA fail to take care of its own citizens basic needs? What kind of message about the USA does this send out to the rest of the world?

When will people in the USA learn personal responsbility?
And who gives a fuck what message the rest of the world, which is going broke faster than the US, thinks? Especially a bunch of marsupial fuckers.

Wait until employers being much more concerned for its profits throws everybody off insurance. The we'll really be rich and healthy. Is it really a matter of personal responsibility when the US will soon have a million people a year declaring bankruptcy over medical bills...raising the cost to the rest of us insured ?

Being so personally responsible, you'll pick up the tab...right ?

A woman fighting a terminal form of bone cancer is trying to raise money to help pay bills with a few weekend garage sales, but the city of Salem says she's breaking the law and is shutting her down. There's a fuller report and a video here.

She is one of the many thousands of Americans failed by the private healthcare system every year. A situation like this would be unthinkable in most Western countries, where sensible universal 'socialised' healthcare systems are in place. For one of the world's richest countries to place one of its own citizens in this situation seems wholly indefensible and pretty much uncivilised to me. Tens of thousands of Americans die preventable deaths annually because they have inadequate or no healthcare insurance (according to wiki).

How much longer will the USA fail to take care of its own citizens basic needs? What kind of message about the USA does this send out to the rest of the world?

This is a nonstory.

Look at her tents-  she ran a STORE, in a residential zone. If she was my neighbor- I would have shut her down too.

Take a good look at her permanent garage sale...   would YOU live next door that that?  Knowing it is all the time...

Are you really this unconcerned with other people while you piss and moan about yourself constantly on here?

If you had the reading comprehension to understand both tweakabelle's an pH boy's posts and put the dots together, you might realize that the gist of the affair is the plain fact that the US is being subjugated to such third world measures as what pH boy and tweaker adequately describe as being result of the health care profit center as exists currently.

Hence the neighbors' weird behaviour when medical issues arise.

Neither the afflicted nor the neighbors should have to put up with it in such manner in any economically developed, not to mention civilized society.

Bullshit. It took my ex roommate less than a year to be put on full disability.

I thought he was from Cleveland[8|]

And no he shouldn't have any problems getting along with the locals. Actually most Canadians I have met are extremely easy to get along with. One of the reasons I like them so much.

Thank you.  Not to mention, there are various 'terms' of disability.  Short term, long term, and full/permanent disability.

MrRodgers -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/28/2011 7:57:22 AM)

We've been over this before. America means business, which means profits which means money. Health care as in almost all things in America...is all about money.

Certain illnesses get almost automatic disability... some take years, all depends on the diagnosis.

I have seen it take 3 years. I knew some it took a mere few months. Telling someone they are talking bullshit because someone you knew got it quick... ahem....there is no "all".... there is no "none".

Sadly this is true in many cases. That is the one thing I wish could be changed about health care in America. None of it should be for profit.

Edwynn -> RE: US Health Care Insanity (8/29/2011 1:45:05 AM)

Yes.

Funny how the payout costs and the insurance premiums were significantly lower and the basic availability higher in the days when hospitals were predominantly non-profit.

Did you see Dr. Sanjay Gupta's report on CNN a couple of weeks ago? It was a special he did from Cuba. I missed most of it, unfortunately, but in the report he said that the average lifespan of people in Cuba was the same as that for the USA, yet in Cuba, they are working with a rather antiquated health care system. One would expect that with all of the state of the art equipment and the high end knowledge the medical field has in this country that lifespans would be greater and the health of its citizens would be far better, but such is not the case. I believe part of the reason is due to the fact that health care is a for profit business (largely) in the USA. It is outrageous that approximately 10% of the population doesn't have health care insurance in this country. (Or at least according to the last statistics that I saw.) Everyone should have equal access to health care, but sadly this isn't the case. In Cuba they do.

The one thing I'll never understand is how Americans would rather have a for profit system, where an administrator of a health care insurance company determines your level of care based on what premiums you pay, rather than universal care where everyone is covered. Neither system is perfect, but when you consider the fact that the number one reason for personal bankruptcy in this country is due to medical expenses, you have to ask yourself which is the lesser of two evils, as the saying goes.
