A woman fighting a terminal form of bone cancer is trying to raise money to help pay bills with a few weekend garage sales, but the city of Salem says she's breaking the law and is shutting her down. There's a fuller report and a video here.

She is one of the many thousands of Americans failed by the private healthcare system every year. A situation like this would be unthinkable in most Western countries, where sensible universal 'socialised' healthcare systems are in place. For one of the world's richest countries to place one of its own citizens in this situation seems wholly indefensible and pretty much uncivilised to me. Tens of thousands of Americans die preventable deaths annually because they have inadequate or no healthcare insurance (according to wiki).

How much longer will the USA fail to take care of its own citizens basic needs? What kind of message about the USA does this send out to the rest of the world?

This is a nonstory.

Look at her tents-  she ran a STORE, in a residential zone. If she was my neighbor- I would have shut her down too.

Take a good look at her permanent garage sale...   would YOU live next door that that?  Knowing it is all the time...

This poor woman has lost her income, her business, her healthcare support. She will probably be bankrupted. All this happened because she is suffering from a terminal illness. This happens to tens of thousands of people annually in the Us.

And this comment is the extent of your interest/concern??? It's all totally avoidable, totally unnecessary.

Please re-consider your values. You couldn't possibly want to end up another Willbur could you?

I get really tired of hearing that health care reform is about me not wanting to take care of my personal needs.  Here is my story:

I started a business and had health insurance for me and my kids.  More for my kids than for me because it's what I could afford.  In January of 2010 I got a group policy policy in my new company and stopped the old bad policy.  In March of 2010 I had a heart attack.  My insurance company refused to pay because of the 6 month preexisting clause (fair enough I guess).  I paid $80,000 out of pocket for health care.  Had my insurance paid it, the bill to the insurance company would have only been $52,000 but as I was the person paying it cost be an extra $30K.  Then my insurance company invalidated by coverage to exclude all heart related care on my policy.  The new preexisting coverage that's part of the new health care law would offer me coverage at about $800 a month which I would gladly pay but it requires a letter of denial of coverage from an insurance company.   They won't deny me, they simply write so many riders that what I need covered isn't covered.  If I have another heart attack in the near future I won't be able to afford another $80K.  All I want is to be able to purchase insurance that covers me.

Now before someone says I shouldn't be able get insurance or that it's not fair that others policies would pay for my health care understand that that's what insurance is.  Everyone pays a fixed amount for insurance and a few people (which could be you at any moment) have their bills paid in the event of a medical emergency.  If you have insurance and get cancer for example your policy will be paying more than you as an individual paid -- in other words other people will be paying for your health care.  That's how insurance works.

Well  1/2 the town I live in is in the same shape medically.  I do not want to live in the business district.   How much shit do YOU have to throw a garage sale?  They allow 3 a year.   Does anyone really need more then 3?   I am sure they would let her slide with 4 or 5 of them.

Even still- let her use ebay or craigslist-  rather then a tent.   That tent is pricey and indicates a BUSINESS.  Not a casual residential garage sale.

Why should the neighbors have to put up- with traffic- parking- noise and blight??

Zoning happens for a reason.  This is a snub to the other home owners.  Some of who also have health problems.

Sad story to be sure. Is why we need a single payer national system so that we can be responsible for our friends and neighbors as much as we are for ourselves...

So she decided to sell what she owned. The sale was bringing in several hundred dollars each weekend until one neighbor complained and she got a visit from the city. “He said, ‘I’m sorry. Rules are rules.’” Cline says she understands the city is trying to prevent nuisances in neighborhoods but she doesn’t think she’s causing any trouble. “We make such an effort of making it back here (backyard) so that it’s not goobering up the neighborhood, so it’s not like a garage sale all laid out day after day after day,” she says. Cline says she’s not looking for special treatment but maybe some understanding. “I just hope that nobody else has to go through this kind of thing. I hope no one else has to give their lives away for nickels and dimes and then be told they can’t even do that. I hope nobody else has to do this ever.” According to the Community Development Department, there is a reason for the law. In the past some people had set up what ended up being permanent flea-market-type sales on their property. After hearing more about Cline’s situation, a supervisor said he is going to take another look to see if there’s anything she can do to operate within the law. But if she reopens now, it is a misdemeanor and about a $300 fine/snip

If the town wants to change the law then fine.

Why should the whole block have to deal with a flea market?    So you would have no problem living next door to it?  Well I would.   Sorry- but I would.

Those are 2 separate issues.    Having financial problems is not an excuse to drag down the neighborhood.   Maybe she could rent the tents out to the homeless.

HOWEVER_ Shocklingly- I agree with you- that we need single payer system.  We also need the food and medicine industry to be designed for health-  unless the food is cleaned up- then it is a lost cause.   You simply cant put water into a cars gas tank- and expect it to work.
