I was wondering who on here is from Australia.

Besides just knowing who is from Down Under, I would be interested in knowing how you see us Norte Americanos, do we all seem the same to you, or do you see differences between Americans and Canadians?

Also, Aussie rules football, what's with the round field?

Aussie here.

Differences...? Let's see, except for the Canadians who seem predominantly French, the rest seem the same as Americans. My sister recently returned from a North American holiday (Canada and US) said Americans are way more helpful and friendly than Canadians in general....

Re Aussie rules, welllll, they're really aren't any rules at all. Since most parks here contain oval sporting fields (usually cricket grounds), they simply utilise the entire field. For example, the biggest games are usually played at the MCG - which stands for Melbourne Cricket Ground. For player safety, they tend to mark a boundary line a few metres inside the fence line to (theoretically) take the actual fence out of play.

Focus.

Where on earth did you get the idea that Canadians are predominantly French?

Uh-ohhh - so the term "French Canadian" would be a figment of my own imagination?

Noooo....but the idea that MOST Canadians are French is wrong. Geez try reading before responding, you won't look like such an idiot.

Wheeew, that's a relief.

As for the "MOST Canadians are French" thing, it'd be you who needs to read before responding because I didn't say that....

As always, no apology necessary.

So when you wrote this:

you meant what?

I'll approach from another angle....

How does that say that most Canadians are French?

I am a non-aussie sheila, but according to the lastest demographics listed for Canada,
french is still as a very predominant ethnicity.
I imagine, as he was attempting to answer Heathers' question of how aussies see north americans,
he wanted to seperate the french population from the north american population in his answer.

Although I have been known to be wrong in the past.

um Zeph, note the except in his sentence and it was then followed by - the rest seem the same as Americans.

The except could be substituted for apart and have the same meaning I think.

Awareness I hadn't realised you were an Aussie.

My answer shows you exactly where the "crossed wire" is....

Ok, maybe I could've worded the original a little better but still, I'll retire from posting if it becomes necessary to run every little sentence by the legal department before submitting it here.

Of course, if everyone would do that instead of just impatiently declaring who's an idiot blah blah.... <shrugs>

Focus.

lol That was my thought as well! Newfies are in a league all their own..

I met a French Canadian guy in California but didnt even realize that until he told me, no French accent at all, which really surprised me. He's a real good looking hunk too, in great shape and would give that Peon a run for his money on those abs!.. (sigh)

I do have to interject that Canada does have a large French Canadian presence and from my travels, the bulk can be found in at least half of Ontario, most areas of Quebec and even the Eastern provinces has areas which are predominantly French Canadian. So yes, it is common for travellers to come across a large percentage of the population who are French Canadian or of French Canadian descent. And yes zephyr.....even in the western provinces one will come across communitie sthat have french speaking people! So I understand that if a foreign traveller visited an area with a predominant french speaking population, they would get the impression that Canada is mainly French Canadian..it is an innocent deduction.
