Uh-ohhh - so the term "French Canadian" would be a figment of my own imagination?

Focus.

I do have to interject that Canada does have a large French Canadian presence and from my travels, the bulk can be found in at least half of Ontario, most areas of Quebec and even the Eastern provinces has areas which are predominantly French Canadian. So yes, it is common for travellers to come across a large percentage of the population who are French Canadian or of French Canadian descent. And yes zephyr.....even in the western provinces one will come across communitie sthat have french speaking people! So I understand that if a foreign traveller visited an area with a predominant french speaking population, they would get the impression that Canada is mainly French Canadian..it is an innocent deduction.

well, that could also be said for East Indians, Asians, Scientologists, etc.. some areas of Vancouver, BC, you would think you were in Hong Kong or China,.. etc. They vastly out number French Canadians, in BC at least..

That's what I thought too...which is why I asked him to clarify.

This is an excellent example of why commas are important.  *adjusts teacher glasses*

..
..except for the Canadians, who seem predominantly French, blah blah blah =  all Canadians seem French - commas surrounding the relative phrase which restates the noun - Canada - prior to it.

..
..except for the Canadians who seem predominantly French blah blah blah = some Canadians seem French - no comma puts the relative noun as a method to differentiate these Canadians from those Canadians.

And people think grammar doesn't matter.  Tut tut!

(Note my use of flag appropriate colors).

Just checking Sunny, as far as I can see, Focus did insert the comma into the right place in his sentence to highlight that he was comparing one group of Canadians to another.  Are you just confirming that he did?

See below -

Let's see, except for the Canadians who seem predominantly French, the rest seem the same as Americans.

ha ha omfg I can still remember sitting next to a guy from Newfoundland on a Greyhound bus for hours and hours.  I couldn't understand a word he said but he was SO gorgeous that I just nodded and smiled.

That is correct!  To have said that all Canadians seem predominantly French, there would have needed to be an additional comma - after "Canadians"

Dunno about the sposta's but I think you've confused your alter-ego's here. My differences have largely been with the Heather one who started this topic, not the Hannah one now managing it....

<shrugs>

I don't know if I was supposed to understand what Focus said regarding this or that sector of Canada, but I just went ahead and understood it anyway.

I'm in a bold mood today.

Not an Aussie, but I know a bunch of them. I've met them in many parts of the world.

I dislike 90% of the people I meet. Christian, Jewish Muslim. Black, white Asian, green with purple polka-dots. It doesn't matter, I dislike about 90% of them.

I have yet to meet an Aussie I didn't like. Not a one. I have two theories on this phenomenon:

1) You have to take an exit exam to get a passport. You must be this nice to leave the country.
2) They have to be nice because you never know when you need someone to suck poison out of your leg. Even their fucking beavers are poisonous! Many years ago, on another site I posted when I ran face first into a black widow spider. The Aussies just made fun of me.

Well that would explain why the Australian men on here are so sour, now wouldn't it?

I didn't notice that they were sour. But poisonous beaver should make for a lot fewer lesbians down under. :-)
