Excellent story, LP!

By and large, I am in the "internet good" camp. If it weren't for the internet, I would have missed hearing and talking to people from all over the world, from all types of backgrounds. I have learned so much from getting to "know" the people who lived it--maybe at the same time I did-- but in different parts of the country.

The internet has also made it easy for every douchcanoe to clog the river. Such is life.

You nailed it, Hib.

(You're welcome, btw.  I don't tell that story often because it's so close to Me.)

The question basically came down to this....did the internet's influence "kill" bdsm by making it available to anyone and everyone?

No. That's a snobby point of view. BDSM was always "available" to everyone in the sense that they could do all of the activities. It's not something that only very special people with very special knowledge can/could do. IF you were fortunate enough to live in an area where others openly practiced these things and talked about it, that was great. If not, you'd be kind of outta luck. I think what the internet did was - as others have already said - connect people to each other to begin a dialogue and facilitate people meeting other like-minded folk to engage in BDSM activities with.

This opening up of all the possibilities obviously did bring a flood of new practitioners in and those who were formerly in a minority (and perhaps felt they held some secret knowledge or special place) were then joined by lots and lots and lots of us ole regular folk who are every bit as kinky but just didn't realize all the possibilities before as we weren't intimately connected with other such practitioners.

Personally, I've been kinky as hell since I can remember but having to depend on face to face meetings with other hopefully kinky folks was getting kind of discouraging. The internet gave me the opportunity to meet other such folks and to connect with my Master/husband. I'm so, so thrilled that it did for me and for so many others.

Anyone complaining that it "killed" it is full of sour grapes.............luci

Thanks so much for sharing that story LadyP, it was very touching and quite eloquently put.  I have to say, that for me, it's for the better.  I always knew I wanted more out of a relationship, just didn't know "it" had a name and that the person *I* was, was, well, submissive.  I've been on here for almost 3 yrs now, under a few old nics that have been deleted and closed.  I learn a lot here, I've made some great friends, and lest we also not forget the "tap tap tap" thread.

I get to go through older threads and read up on information that I'm not aware of.  I get to have fun with some of the dingleberries  who contact me, know that it whoooooooooooshes right over their head.  Then there are the various people I chat with from these boards in messages, by e-mail or on the phone.  I found my place in the world and I'm glad I was finally able to do that.  Mistakes have surely been made, but now I am better educated and a lot less taken in by the douchecanoes and asshats who think that because I'm submissive they're going to get laid or that I'll drop to my knees and call them Master right away.  Yuh huh, like that's gonna happen.

What he said, and if I hadn't discovered BDSM and then Gor there would still be a puzzle piece missing. Plus I wouldn't have met all of you.

I remember the pre-computer days.  The community as such was much more tight knit than it is now.  There were always people who interacted - via regular snail mail - who were not part of the community and were out doing their thing.  It wasn't so much a "secret society" as it was ... you have to be careful.  People were so amazingly ignorant about things back then (as in uneducated).  The "secret society" thing was about people being careful due to police and such.  I remember people talking about that.

When AIDS hit and hit hard in the 90s, it was the leather community that stepped up to the plate where I was.  They had already been talking about safety, blood and body fluids, etc. and were able to educate the vanilla world about how to handle things.

best,
sunshine

I'm in Hanner's cellar. I'm not quite sure where that is.

Well, Bones, it depends on how you look at it.

No, it didn't 'kill' BDSM.  More people can now find others than ever before.  This is a good thing.

Did it change leather?  Yes it did, and not for the better.  Too many "add water and stir" folks.

Well, we "old" folks, we're still here.

this.

It killed my old community and made it into something else.  It made it so accessible so quickly that it became impossible to "police" and suddenly the dungeons were filled with tourists.

it made overnight "experts" sitting in their mom's basement even though they had never seen, tasted or touched a whip before.  It took away civility.  Internet affords anonymity to allow people to be vulgar, rude and insulting.

While it allowed for good information to be disseminated--it also allowed for rumors, myth and outright dangerous b/s spread like wildfire in seconds.

The only reason why I use the internet and CollarMe now is because I'm stuck, forced to.  I still go to several munches each month--I go to at least 1 play party a month--visit my Households monthly--but sadly, this is now the norm.

So yes, it's changed the BDSM experience for me
No, I don't like it.
Yes, I have to live with it.

'Cuz I didn't find out til today that you were in Hanner's cellar.  I'll look for you next time I'm there.

On topic, this is why I like the internet and how it's opened up a whole new world for me and allowed me to make new friends I can't wait to meet in R/L.

I think the internet has been a bit of a double edged sword as far as BDSM goes.

The upside is that the internet has made this more accessible to many folks for whom it would not have been otherwise.

The downside is is that the internet has made this more accessible to many folks for whom it would not have been otherwise.

If you get my drift.

I literally lol'ed when I read this. The notion that the Internet killed "bdsm" is one born from personal ego and arrogance. Certain individuals want to feel special by being part of some secert, taboo sub-culture and now that it's being mixed into main stream and available to anyone, they are aren't so "special" anymore.

I didn't see that anyone had posted this article... but I thought it pertinent here...and I will admit.. for me.. in some ways... the internet has altered my leather life... and not all that positively.. although like most things.. its here to stay and I have to get used to it.. I don't think I'll ever get used to the HUGE volumes of really new folks who come right off the internet and don't have a clue about many things.. including basics about being out in the public scene.. that really bothers me...

anyway.. feel free to chew on this...

That was a great article, Madame4a! I've been reading a lot on Fet about the "dissolving" of leather, and how the men are wanting to go back underground. To get away from our chick cooties.

Yeah, that's something of a sore spot with me. Remember in the mid-90's, when there was this movement to "join" and "pansexual" was not a bad word? Lots of leathermen were and are supercool around women but dingaDANG some of them were/are like eight year olds on the playground.
