I have never blocked a soul on CM.

It's nice to see Firm posting in other parts of the forums, I always enjoyed Firm's and Rich's sense of humor.

This is definitely the bowels of CM.

Why is it the bowels?

Because we don't spend our time talking about what the cat is doing and other exciting topics?

sorry willb but you are one of the not named people...not a chance in hell? you are part of the problem, not the solution

awww my feelings are so hurt.

sorry, but nobody gives a fuck what you think.

People who want a rational discussion get one, those who want to lie, strawman, spin or snark get what they deserve.

My God!! I agree with you HCM, there is hope for you yet. [:D]

Oh come off it Willbe is a dork and a right winger with little or no integrity in the way he presents his arguments, but he is fun. This section would be the less if he were not here, and to be honest, when he decides to drop the partisan stance and "I am an expert" crap, he can be an entertaining and enlightening opponent.

DomImus -> RE: is it possible to have a rational discussion in P and R? (8/30/2011 5:01:02 PM)

I voted no. To paraphrase someone who I rarely agree with... P&R really is the cesspool of this site but I am grateful to the powers that be for creating it. The General Discussion forum is no longer the cesspool it once was before P&R was created.

I am not going to drop the "I am an expert crap" on issues where I am clearly far more expert than most if not everyone here....economics, Social Security and insurance. I've been living and working in those areas for my entire career. I have access to depths of information than no one here does, and I talk to more businessmen and investment experts weekly if not daily than anyone here. My posts in those areas aren't "partisan", they are supported by facts. If the facts happen to disagree with someone elses ideology, too bad, it still doesnt change the facts.

Outside of economics Im pretty much politcially in the middle of both this board and the US.

Religion...yes Im a hard atheist, and my posts are "partisan" in those areas. But religion is purely opinion, and no one is any less "partisan" than anyone else.

Don't you just love when a thread on having a rational discussion, degrades into irrationality?   [:)]

My main interest is always going to be trying to do the best thing for my children and their children so without listening and weighing the value that comes from diverse opinions from all sides, I don't think it would be possible for me to do so. There is value to be found from a variety of posters. There is intellect on all sides. I'm liberal on social issues and conservative on fiscal issues so I try to find a balance that will be as correct as possible for my family, friends and countrymen. That's the way I think so that's the way I try to vote. To that end, I have not had too much trouble participating in rational conversations with many of the regs here regardless of their political affiliations or mine. Right now my vote for the next go round is up for grabs but I look at it this way.. I still have time to make a decision and I will spend the next year watching the players very carefully.. then decide who will get my vote based on their words and deeds and what I 'think' their potential will be for the next four year cycle.

I don't block those people. It is the one's that either 1) Just use personal insults 2) Never have substance to their statements and is the same post just reworded, over, and over, and over, 3) Those that show no interest in actually discussing things, and just yell party line rhetoric ALL THE TIME.

I believe I have six people on hide total. It cuts down on the white noise distractions, as there are less posts to read, and if I am in a bad mood it helps to keep me from posting emotionally.

Your 3 point test identifies what I call "aggressive/shrill/shill posters" (ASSes, in other words), putting them on hide subtracts nothing from the discussion.

I've only got three people on hide, and its definitely raised my enjoyment of the forums, and part of the reason I voted "Yes", you can have a rational discussion.

You also are able to have a rational discussion, as some have pointed out, by picking your battles, and simply ignoring (if not hiding) some of the normal dissing and insults that will come your way.

The reason for much of the seemingly pointless insulting is generally (1) to get your excited (and distracted), or (2) to feed their own internal emotional needs, or (3) to play to the crowd.  Or a combination of all three.  Escalating generally serves their purposes, and distracts from mine.

Not that there isn't a time and place for some hard words.

I've noticed over time that there are basically two main types of "insulting posters".

First, the "holy-rollers": people who come in all eager to save the masses and educate us poor noobs about the world's real  positions and facts.  They pick up a lot of opposition and often "flame-out" after a short period of time, unless they get a clue.

It happens on all sides of the political divide. An example on "my side of the aisle" is lockedaway.  The man was passionate, and more often than not correct in his gross theory (IMO).  But he was alienating people unnecessarily, got excited when he was jumped on for the insulting way that he posted and spent more time trading insults than explaining his position and views.  And he spent a lot of effort to post in great detail.  (It can be a lot of work in saving the world, yanno.)

On the left, there is a slightly different process and methods, but the results are similar.

Second, we have the "insult packs".  I've got to admit (and please excuse me), this tends to be generally left-of-center posters (although not exclusively) They may have some valid points, but they do two things that really distracts from any kind of real discussions:  they seem to straw man the hell out of some people, and they rarely spend much time to "expand and revise" their posts and position, but make plenty of bald statements and throw  barbs.

We have all probably been guilty of being in both groups.  Sometimes being part of the "insult pack" is a valid technique to get someone to pay-fucking-attention. But if members of the "pack" aren't willing to occasionally slow down, forgive, and draw out someone that they are overwhelming into a real discussion ... they can poison the entire forum.

I'll make your life easier and skip on the lap dances, but the odds of me making it to Vegas are about the same as Hillary's chances of winning the Republican nomination. [:D]

I'll see what I can do though, because it sure as Hell would be fun to get together with you and Insanity after all these years of sparring.

Is it perhaps an answer to the OP's question that the leftest of the lefties looks forward to meeting the righties more than any others on here?

Damn.  I hope Hillary runs for the Republican nomination.  And that you make it to Vegas.

It's six months away, Arpig, but tell ya what ... I make it up to Montreal about once a year, but I need to go over to Ontario soon ... and maybe to Vancouver.  Philosophy is in that area, I think, and he's another guy I'd like to hang with a bit.

Where do you hang your hat?

Careful, Firm. The best part of Ottawa is actually in Quebec (Le Chateau Montebello) and is best reachable via a one car ferry, and the second best part, the 67s, are off for the summer. [:D]

Well, I've not found a whole lot of folks acknowledging expertise, or even having it when claimed.  None of us can verify another's knowledge base.

I just get bored with the gratuitous insults, whether they come from right or left.

anniezz338 -> RE: is it possible to have a rational discussion in P and R? (8/30/2011 11:06:26 PM)

Our own government can't have a rational discussion amongst themselves. Emotions/opinions are strong right now in the face of the issues our country is having. Why would a public forum be any different?

Know what the best thing about a BJ from Sarah Palin is? The 10 minutes of silence. (Sorry couldn't resist :) )
