That's interesting because I would think that black would work in a generic sense, encompassing all the way white or does for us pale folk.

Black and white are skin colors, not ethnicity. They don't describe cultural background either. Italians, Brits, Canadians, hell even various regions of the US have different cultures with their ethnic background thrown in for good measure.

Why aren't the "caucasians" yelling about how that doesn't describe their ethnicity? Jewish people are white but their ethnicity is Jewish.

As for the "mixed" race who identify as "black," why deny the other parts of your heritage, whether it be Cherokee, Mexican or Italian?

While I am sure to get blasted for saying this, wanting equality and an end to racism isn't going to happen as long as you lead with how you are different. I look at people, not their skin color. My family is made up of Italians, Germans, Souix, Dutch and Mexican to name just a few of our ethnicities. I just call them my family, except for the purpose of this post.my family, except for the purpose of this post.

True but the alternative is to have Jamaican, Haitian, African (whole long list there) and every other ethnicity that could be considered black. I don't even want to START on every ethnic group that could encompass white. So while black and caucasian aren't exactly accurate, the alternative would take up pages.

I agree. I don't like the term "caucasian". I am exceedingly white-skinned. I'm half Norwegian, ffs. We are so white we're nearly translucent! And it's interesting to hear that there are black people who don't want to be classified as black, due to their country of origin. I do agree that African American is ridiculous on a global site such as this one.

I agree on the caucasian thingie. My skin has two shades, white and omg-that's-RED. Still there is no way everyone is going to be happy, imo simplified is good. One thing I do really hate is the politically correct words that are popping up. I would think that African-American would be more objectionable than the more flexible term Black. Still to each their own I guess.

I was talking to a friend & telling him why I call myself "Norwegian-American". He said that when he was young, he had all these friends whose grandparents were immigrants & had thick accents, but his grandparents were from this country. He said that he doesn't self-identify as "African American" because nobody he knows in his whole family were ever living in Africa. I thought that he had a good point. Yes, back millenia ago, all of the Black people lived in that one area of the world, but there are so many who are many, many generations removed from Africa that they don't identify with it at all. I identify as Norwegian due to my grandparents who both came from there, although from completely different areas & different backgrounds. But they were very influential on the customs & tradition that I still follow. I loved growing up Norwegian in this country. I loved belonging to that other culture as well as being an American.

My mom's side is Danish my dad's is Romanian, my identity is simply Canadian. It's just simpler than explaining the complicatedness (yes that's a word dammit!) of my family. I'm lazy like that.
