You are right, I don't normally, but I have. But then again I am not overly worried about myself being tracked as I have no reason to be worried.

I know of two programs that will clear them, and several manual methods and a few scripts that will do it. So much for not knowing. As usual, you can tell nothing, you assume yet you don't know.

I didn't go into every way that a person could be tracked, nor the various methods of preventing them. I was simply making a quick point. I was not meaning to give a lecture on internet privacy, I charge $ for those.

I just started a thread on evercookies. I didn't want to hijack this hijack. Tracking people on the net in that thread would be considered MINOR thread drift here so, have at it.

Anyway, what would be nice, if it could be done and was decided, would be to have people run their own thread. In other words be able to bounce people out. However this would not be a good thing in all cases. There would have to some criterium or criteria to invoke that. I'm not exactly sure what that should be. Also I bet it would be a nightmare to incorporate into the software. Not so much a nightmare but I don't think anyone is going to do it for free.

What's more I wonder just how much maybe some older versions of forum software might cost. I mean fifteen year old software still works, the only thing it would need probably is some security enhancements. People could start their own forum and actually own the place. That and some hosting could keep the overhead way down. Like blogs. They let you open blogs I think without buying the software, but you put up with their banners usually. There are options out there I have not explored and every once in a while someone comes in here bitching, you could just send them there.

Whatever.

The main problem with these forums is that the more experienced IP experts aren't willing to share their expertise w/ us computer newbies. i, for one, think this is most unfair.

Don't bank on it. Revealing that a member has other member names is not the same thing as revealing their actual RL identity. If the rule was not in effect then there was no rule broken. However I think that after your ummmm whatever you call it, there will be a rule most likely.

I'm fairly satisfied with how the forum is set up (and moderated), but there have been some interesting and valid suggestions made.

The search function does leave much to be desired;

Some kind of FAQ or sticky area with common questions, etc. might be helpful for newcomers;

As well, a "New to BDSM" forum;

I'd like to see some kind of "ranking" system for posters to help identify those posters who provide the best advice. Ranking probably isn't the best word for it, but gets the idea across... something like earning your leathers.

Anyway, the best way I can think to do this is to allow specific posts to be rated (maybe just a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down"), and the poster's ranking would increase with the number of well rated postings they make.

I say specific posts, because I feel that posts made in the Polls, Humor, Off-Topic type threads shouldn't count. Having loads of readers give a thumbs up to a post agreeing that "so and so" is a hunky actor would skew the validity of the ranking. Ratings should only be allowed in the forums where BDSM/DS/Health/Relationship type posts are made.

I'm torn on the idea of merging the "Ask a Master" and "Ask a Mistress" forums. On the one hand, it does seem strange that there is different forums for men and women dominants, but only a single forum for submissives. Not that that stops anyone from posting anywhere, of course.

On the other hand, I can understand the points made by others against combining them. I rarely ever visit the Mistress forum except for seeing an interesting topic scroll by in the "As the Collar Turns" box... and then, I'm always disappointed to see what forum it is. Perhaps just change the name of the "Ask a Master" forum to "Ask a Dominant", and leave the Mistress forum as is.

I do feel that a specific forum for relationship questions might be in order. I know that anytime I've wanted to start a thread on a basic relationship topic, I'm always torn about where to post it. General relationship advice or questions don't have anything to do with BDSM, per se. Off-Topic just seems to be and odd place for that kind of thread, too... lost between a "so and so" died thread, and "Did you see the Shooting Stars Last Night" discussion.

Well... that's my two cents worth.

Treasure, the ranking won't happen because it is reverse blacklisting. As we know reverse discrimination is discrimination so it kinda goes against their grain. However I have seen quite a few forums out there with "rate this post", maybe that would work.

I do recognize that, but this wouldn't really be any different than the rankings we already have. For example, you rank "Insane" but I rank with four paddles. That ranking is based purely on the number of posts we've each made.

What I'm proposing is similar, except that instead of counting all posts, count only those posts that have been rated "good" or "thumbs up" toward the ranking.

In this way, newcomers seeking advice have some way of discerning if the advice they are getting is coming from someone who may really know what they are talking about. Right now, they can look to see how many posts someone has made, but that doesn't let them know if those posts were racked up giving sound advice, or playing a game or arguing politics.

Edited to add:

Will this create competition between the regular posters?

Probably. And in doing so may also provide incentive for posters to participate with more thoughtful posts.

Or maybe not.

I guess I understand. It might be useful but I think it would be hell to implement. It would constitute a secondary rank, and as they would never allow a negative rating it would then seem negative if a member had a high post count but a low "positivity" rating for their posts.

To give you an example of what I'm saying, I am a member of Paltalk. It has worldwide mambership and realtime voice and video chatrooms. Many of the rooms are music based, at least most of the more popular ones. A buddy of mine is a superadministrator in a couple of them. He has promised me no special favors and yes I have been bounced and muted here and there of course, lol.

However we get into some really rare music and one of the guys was the Beatles' sound Man, talk about some rare stuff ! So it's interesting. But the point is alot of people give a sort of thumbs up to tunes they like, there are a couple of different ways. I refuse to do that no matter how much I like the tune. Know why ? Because if I don't say something that implies that I don't like it. In fact once in a great while I will ask who does one or what it is, the name etc. but that happens very rarely because I pretty much have all I want. So the lack of positivity can be construed as negativity. I only ask if I am VERY impressed by something for that reason.

So if I like a post and I give the poster a thumbs up, OK. What if I forget ? What if I didn't see the post because I never got into the thread in the first place because the title didn't catch my eye ? Then deserved credit is not given.

And I can see this becoming a war. The status quo crowd against the radical crowd for example. You'll have jlf and DomKen feeding each other points and pahunkboy and RealOne doing the same. If it is possible to give negative points then each camp will be doing that to the other.

I don't mean to shoot the idea down, but those I think are good reasons to confine the ratings to individual posts, and unfortunately that would mean that they should also not be tallied up in any way.

And I think the software wouldn't be too hard to incorporate.
