No it's not. You have no clue what it means, so you can't possibly know the proper way to say it.

Booya!!

The kids today need to bring back when teenagers said, "guy" at the end of every sentence.

I'm not sure I see how being able to rate a post as good can be abused.

As I mentioned to LP, I'm sure there are some who might use sock puppets to try to up good ratings for their own post and thereby increase their ranking.  But the really good advice givers are going to have many more posts rated "good" by the general population than any one person will be able to create accounts to try to rate their own.

We're talking not just the regular posters being able to rate a post, but there are thousands of people who read and never or rarely post.  I assume they all have their own reasons for not posting, but this way, they can participate, too.

Personally, I think it would be a good way to encourage active participation by those who would really care what their rating is.  As I clearly spelled out in my suggestion, I don't think every forum should have rated posts... only those that have lifestyle and relationship topics.  If someone posts only in P&R, Off-Topic, PORS or similar forums, they wouldn't have a ranking... and likely wouldn't care.  If they do care and only occasionally post in one of the ranked forums, it might encourage them to participate there more often with well thought out advice.

Your arguments have swayed me.

Following up on that, I would like everybody - not only registered and logged in members - to be able to vote in the polls. As it is, most polls have only a number of voters that is often far too small (less than 0ne hundred) to draw any significant conclusions. If the thousands of anonymous lurkers could also vote, that situation would change for the better.

Oddly enough, I was exchanging back and forth on a thread with somebody just a couple of weeks back about this very idea.  The person had roughly 300 posts.

Now, in that three hundred posts, the first hundred or so were ones that a lot of people disliked.  As he started to like the place more, the quality of his posts came up.

Imagine though, if during that first hundred posts, people had been rating him.  He probably would have gotten a bad name and split.  I'll bet a lot of us weren't prizes during that time frame.

So, what's next?  We only let "established" posters have ratings?  We've got two threads which are basically boiling down to complaining about cliques.  A rating system makes that even worse.  It's going to turn the place into one, big popularity contest and I suspect it's not going to come down to the content quality of actual posts.

I'd rather see Facebook be Facebook, Fet be Fet, and CM be CM.

ETA : Rule, I didn't realize at first that you meant vote on posts, but I am going to let this stand.

Very interesting. I think in that case it should be up to the OP to make it public or a CM only poll OR maybe the visitor votes are logged separately. In either case there should be a way to prevent people from voting more than once. I have never tried to vote more than once in a poll so I have no idea if you can do it. When they have vote by cellphone they charge money, and while maybe a few people might vote twice, they aren't going to vote 1,000 times.

OK the simplest implementation - members get a cookie that limits each to one vote. Outside voters must vote by phone with CID unblocked. If they have blocking they must use *67. That way the software can ptrevent them from voting more than once. For members, to delete cookies means no automatic login so that means you have to sign back in making it harder. And visitors of course might have more than one phone so they might get it off twice or so, but not ridiculous.

Hell even in a Presidential election thjey can't keep people from voting more than once, hell even dead people voted ! But that would keep the error rate down to something reasonable.

I like the idea actually, it would be a new feature for the site, and as you can see there are almost always more visitors to colarchat than members. If the site is after more members, this might be a good thing. In fact there may even be a provision to allow visitors to post, but only to a poll. In a way this could put out feelers to the non-kink community. Overall make the polls more accurate and thus more valid.

I like it. I hope they like it. I hope it doesn't cost a fortune to implement. It doesn't even have to be toll free numbers, almost everyone has at least continental long distance included these days. The only problem is what about overseas ?

Conversely it could be 900 numbers and actually pull in some money. There are options. I wouldn't like the 900 number deal but .......

Again, no negative ratings... only the ability to rate a post as good.  No ratings at all in "off-topic" type threads; only lifestyle/relationship forums.

Sure, Suzie, Molly, Liz and Mary may go around rating all of each others posts as good to gain higher ranking, but in the long run, their little clique isn't going to be able to keep up with the overall ratings by everyone else given to people who truly deserve to have their posts recognized as sound advice.

The biggest potential problem I see is the issue of posts that might be considered high-jacking in a rated forum.  But I do have a higher opinion of people being able to self-police... I can't see many people bothering with rating a high-jack as good advice.

Then again, I may be too optimistic in that respect.

All in all, I don't have a problem with there being a competition for popularity when the way to gain that popularity is by posting thoughtful and sound advice in a lifestyle or relationship area.  We could use more of that around here.

The option for most bulletin board Karma settings is either show the total, or show both positive and negative rankings.  Most don't offer the option of only positive rating.  They aren't easily customized, although you can fiddle with the coding, it is usually a pain in the ass.  The options available usually look something like this:

Set the minimum posts needed to modify karma
Set wait time in hours
Restrict administrators to wait time

Karma label
Karma applaud label
Karma smite label
Again, I don't know if CM has this option, as part of its system settings, but most do.

Except that if its a lurker, and not a registered user, there isnt much that can be done to prevent them from rating more than once.

If a negative rating had to be left, it seems you ought to be able to set the number required to affect the ranking so high that no one would ever reasonably be able to reach it.  The "smite" label could be made something innocuous with no negative connotations like "registered poster".

Maybe?

Edited to add:  After looking at the image posted, and if I understand it correctly, if you made the Karma label and Karma smite label the same innocuous name, that should invalidate the affect of negative ratings, no?

At any rate, I'm being called to bed now.  As VAA has said the thread would be locked in the morning, I don't expect to be able to offer any further clarifications or suggestions.

Again, thanks to VAA for asking our opinions!

The option available is to just show the totals, and one hopes that there are more positive rankings than negatives which averages out to a positive rank  Although, people can be real jackasses, and if enough people dislike them  or their posts it will show up in the negatives.

ETA:  This is my experience with SMF/PHP bulletin boards.  I can't possibly know what system options CM Chat actually has available.  The board LOOKS to me like a customized SMF bulletin board, but that's just a guess on my part.

Ok, I'll admit it...about two years ago I had a sock puppet called Greedy's Cat or somesuch. I did love that sock puppet!

Did you discuss that cat in the "What does your cat do?" thread?

I do not remember. I seem to remember he complained a bit about lack of Fancy Feast...

The options just allow you to label the button title - and people who are wanting to applaud, could be hitting the smite button instead (because it has the same name) and applying a negative vote unintentionally or vice versa.

Anyway, its all speculative, since I don't know that the option is even available on this board.  I just know that the option IS available on many similar boards.

Ive seen some forums with a star rating system. Didnt really mean shit. Kinda showed what the community thought about different people.  Lower rating people could only post so much/day. Turned into certain people being at a one star rating and only being able to post 5 times a day.

Think of the time and energy so many of us could potentially save in a day!! (not that I want to, mind you, it was just a thought)

I really like Treasure's ideas on ranking posts for people who give awesome advice with one small correction. There can be very good threads in Off Topic, they just aren't kinky stuff.

I also really like the idea of a place to ask relationship-related stuff. It would be nice to have a place to ask about stuff that isn't kink-related which doesn't fit under the existing forums.

ETA: Just thought of something. Wouldn't configuring things so that if someone creates a second profile the first is deleted take care of the sock puppet thing? Recently I tried to create a new profile on Alt when I couldn't remember my old one and wanted to check out a friend's blog and I got a message that if I did that my old profile would be deleted so I know it's possible.

Personally, I don't see the point of the ranking system. When I was new here, I perused the fora for several weeks to get a feel for who posted what & how they posted. I found the posters who spoke to me, whose posts I enjoyed. I don't like the idea of a popularity contest. What I see as good advice, 37 other people might think is awful, & vice versa. Just because someone gives advice that most people rank as good advice doesn't meant that it's necessarily good or even helpful to me.

This is sort of like the threads that ask "Who do you follow on the forums?" Ego strokers for the ones whose names go up, and nothing much for those whose names are not mentioned. Plus, I see a lot of value in some of the posts in the Off-Topic & Politics & Religion fora. If you're going to set up a ranking system, why leave those out? If, as Treasure suggests, there won't be an option for negative votes, then only the really good posts would be ranked, right?

Personal opinions are just that: personal opinions. SirDomlyDom may have some good ideas in your opinion, but he doesn't do WIITWD in a way that matches the way I do it. You see the problem? I can make up my own mind whose posts tend to speak to me & whose don't. And some posters are evenly divided in my mind between good advice & crap.

Why change Ask a Master to Ask a Dominant but leave Ask a Mistress? Still smacks of gender bias. There is only one Ask a Submissive/Slave that includes all genders, so why separate out the genders of those who are in the top position? And what about the genders of those who don't consider themselves male or female? Do we exclude them?
