I'm very surprised to see no threads here discussing the contents of Obama's speech tonight... merely a single thread asking if it should be passed.  I would think this would be a very hot topic amongst everyone here.

I'm afraid my opinion won't be well received by the left leaning posters, and I suspect they will consider it to be nothing but right-wing negativism, however as the first to start a thread asking for opinions, I should lead by example.

My "cliff notes"  version of the speech would be:

I'm going to put forth a bill that Congress needs to pass right away.  If Congress passes this bill, the government is going to do some unspecified things to create jobs.  We'll focus on infrastructure that needs building, and schools that need repairing.  We'll offer some tax credits to businesses that hire the long-term unemployed.  Congress needs to work together to pass this bill.  This bill will be paid for, once Congress figures out how to pay for it.  Congress needs to be prepared to restructure Medicare and Social Security... they need to be willing to tax the rich.  Congress needs to do the job it was hired to do and stop worrying about the upcoming election.  Pass this bill.

Overall, I was pretty disappointed in Obama's speech.   It was a motivating speech, expertly delivered, but within minutes of him beginning, I was wanting details.  What are the plans?  How will this be paid for?

By the end of the speech, those questions still remained.  I honestly don't think I heard anything new.

It isn't that I don't think he may have some good ideas, but considering the American people have been waiting with baited breath for this plan for some time now, it was a real let down.  That, and we didn't really get a good idea of just what those ideas were.

I'm also very skeptical that anything will be able to be accomplished that will really help anyone in the short term.  To me this felt like typcial political "we'll get around to talking about it", and maybe months from now something will happen.

All in all, I felt this was a campaign speech.  Lots of promises of hope and change, with a bit of finagling so that Republicans will look like the bad guy in the end.

What say you?

"You must pass this bill NOW!"

"Then I'll let you read it."

Well, he knew better than to step on the football game, and it was over before I got the radio in my car turned on after work.

I'll read the text, and get back to you, ok?  Is there is any reason I need to actually watch?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOoohhhhhhhhhhhhhh grins, well apart from the fact I disagree with you:)
I think for what time he had, he wasted some time, and should have put more into the initiatives, but the urgency was there, according to Boehner and Cantor there are certain initiatives that they can work with. However there is no way they will let the tax increases hold for wealthy or the corps. Bohener gave more away than the pres did.
I reserve judgement on the actual bill.. but better than the "jobs plans" any of the publicans plausibles gave out in either of their debates
:)

Ok.  That was a heck of a speech.  I have the audio going in the background, and he brought his oratorical skills to this one.  I like him best when he takes that common-sense, postpartisan sort of tone.  Remember the '04 DNC speech?

Of course, we've seen this before.  He has a record now, that has nothing to do with the rhetoric.  These days, it's easy to understand that "ending the circus" means, "send in the clowns," and "look at the great new ringmaster's hat we got for Joe Biden."

You asked for opinions, and in giving yours you prefaced it with a warning that left leaning posters would not like it...well allow me to qualify mine in the same fashion...those on the right will not appreciate my take on the speech.
I thought it was a political masterpiece....it places the obstructionists in the Republican party squarely in a box.Up till now the strategy has been to place the onus for this failing economy on President Obama, fair enough...now he places before Congress his jobs bill....the right has one of two choices, neither one of them very appealing to the Republican Party....block the bill and by doing so they must assume some responsibility for the staggering unemployment numbers...or pass the bill and declare that Obama now owns lock stock and barrel the American job market...of course should the bill reap positive results this could blow up in 2012 as far as Repulican hopes for taking back the Oval Office.
Neither move can be very appealing for the right..how do they run on the failing economy after blocking this bill...and if in passing this bill the economy and the jobs numbers improve.....Obama still wins.

Rob Social Security which has been heading for the rocks to pump the economy?

He won't be around when they have to either pay the money back or short sheet the retirees, assuming this scheme is actually even functional.

He has a few other tricks tossed in, but that and a couple of tax cuts and some "make work" on the education system and the infrastructure and some screwing around with unemployment insurance is about the most of it.

But it woudl be nice to see the actual bill, and not just hear what Obama hopes will be in it, because by the time it clears the US Congress and heads for his desk, it certainly won't resemble anything he said tonight.

And in that case it will be this Congress that "owns" the bill.....and they so far have not shown much willingness to own anything other than tax cuts for the rich.

There is no bill at this time. He should have said, "Pass this speech."

Is it your contention that he does not have a bill to submit to congress at this time ?
Are you suggesting he just stood up in front of Congress and the American people and lied to us all ?
Are you really that stupid?

Also what he failed to mention is that yes, China is building new airports and railroads and I just saw a news article showing how empty the stations were. Why over develop without the need for it?

This is inexcusable. Building a world-class transportation system is part of what made us an economic superpower. And now we're going to sit back and watch China build newer airports and faster railroads? At a time when millions of unemployed construction workers could build them right here in America?

One of the key problems in the real estate market is that they did so much over building that it created a glut on the market. There are too many houses and not enough financing or demand to fill them. I expect in another 5-10 years we could see houses fall to 80's levels.

Also, neither party has mentioned anything about changing the status of our membership in the WTO, ending the subsidies that give China and other developing nations an edge on the trading. When the dollar was significantly stronger than all the other currencies in the world, subsidies may have made some sense to keep trading going on, but now, it's killing us as we see inflation on cheap Chinese crap, and no incentive for companies to manufacture things here, because simply we can't compete on price at all. NAFTA, TAFTA, these kinds of "trade agreements" need to end. They were the original seeds of our economic destruction along with the lousy economic policies of BOTH parties.

And again, I concur with previous posts that, this is another sign it before reading it scenario. God only knows what's in the actual legislation.

I disagree with the political masterpiece statement, quite simply because again, Obama was only slightly less ambiguous as he was on his campaign trail talking about "Change". One of his campaign promises was to bring our troops home as a first order of business, and we still have troops in not 2 but 3 places and talk of sending them elsewhere. That was the one thing I actually agreed with him on, and he faltered.

As far as I'm concerned, there are very few politicians that have any credibility and I think most of them just pander to the masses hoping to preserve their own positions.

I pretty much agree with Mike- I guess no surprises there. From my perspective, he's finally called the Republicans out- "that there are some people here that won't pass anything that involves new taxes". He's showed he knows what he's up against- and he's no longer throwing the ball into the Republicans court- there's no- gee, let's work together on this one. It's much more of a put up or shut up- i.e. here's my plan- you people haven't got anything, and I'm going campaigning to make sure everybody knows it.

It's long overdue.

However, there's no moonshot. He's calling for all Americans to get to work-but the reality is that Uncle Sam needs to be a first customer for some new stuff- and there's no money for it. Oh, he's talking about building roads, but that's not going to do it. He mentioned cuts- big ones- but he didn't say from where. Is it the military? DHS?

In a certain sense, there's not much hope- there's nothing to get excited about. Great, he's got a budget. Whoopee! Yeah, we should return mfg to the US- but manufacturing what?

Sam

Let me see if I understand all of this carping ,what you folks are suggesting is that he should send the House the proposed bill...give them some time to read it and than...and only than appear before them and address the House and the American people?
Sounds ass backwards to me.
