Have you ever taken the Megabus?

Have you gotten the $1 fare?

Tell me all about it.

Thanks

I was also interested in this, they have very cheap fares into Toledo (someplace I travel rather frequently), but I have yet to try it myself.

Also this may be mis-catagorized, perhaps it needs to be moved to Off-Topic Discussions?

edited because I can't f-ing type after 2 Captain and Gingers.......

Wow, that's a relief! I was thinking: WTF is "riding the megabus"? and trying to imagine what sort of bizarre perversion it entailed. [:D]

myotherself -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 8:55:42 AM)

I've used the UK Megabus. Travelled from Newcastle to London for £1, and back for £5. A round trip of 700 miles for £6 - the other national bus service would have cost about £50 return, and the train would be double that.

It's a pretty decent service. Buses were as good as the other carrier, but there's no frills. No snacks served on-board, and few stops on the journey (there is a toilet on-board, if you're feeling brave. Or desperate).

I would do it again, no problem.

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 5:54:18 PM)

I was looking into it , Ive heard some stories about people arriving to find their bus had gone, breakdowns, missing their stops, moving busstops without telling customers etc, I was gonna go from Toronto to DC and almost had it booked for 15$ return, then there was a crisis so I had to cancel. To be fair I also looked up greyhound and a few other companies, amtrack and via rail and everyone had similar issues to megabus.
Ill still do it probably in the new year, just for the cheapness curiosity and how much worse it is than flying energy wise(I HATE airports)

LadyHibiscus -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 6:00:43 PM)

I really don't like buses, but the idea is intriguing. Certainly cheaper tha driving.

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 6:05:02 PM)

sadly Im one of those crazy brits who never learned to drive, its probably a good thing:)

LadyHibiscus -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 6:06:25 PM)

In Detroit, driving is pretty much mandatory!

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 6:12:09 PM)

yeah I noticed that when I was there, altho its pretty much a requirement here now too, toronto is the worst place for commuting in canada , sposedly.. working from home I dont notice it so much these days.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 6:15:08 PM)

I have an arduous three mile commute...which would be impossible most of the year without a car.

Edited for farking phone typo!

littlewonder -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 6:41:18 PM)

I've taken it quite a few times and yes I've done the $1 deal. It's the same as paying their regular price...same ride..you just have to act fast to get the $1 deal.

Megabus is an ok ride. It's crowded just like Greyhound and can sometimes be a little spotty on schedules, usually running late. I once was taking a Megabus from NYC to Baltimore and it was over 2 hours late which they said was caused by the bus breaking down and they had to wait for a new one. It happens on lots of buses though and not just Megabus.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/10/2011 8:21:07 PM)

I took Megabus from Buffalo Airport to Toronto a few years ago.  Because it was booked at the last minute, I didn't get $1 fare, but it was only $26, certainly cheaper than flying and 1/2 the price of Amtrak.  Bus ran on time, was clean, wasn't full-up and we arrived in Toronto on time.  And there was a rest stop on the way back.

blkswitch -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 3:09:49 PM)

I want to get to go to:
Baltimore, Maryland
Washington, DC
Boston, MA
and
NYC

but I'd have to book way in advance like a month and take several busses to get to the east coast!
St. Louis, MO to Chicago, IL
Chicago, IL to Detroit, MI
Detroit, MI to Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh, PA to the east coast.

that's alot of time spent on a bus ...let's see that's $5 if I booked early enough to get to the East coast on the dollar specials!!!  almost a day spent on the bus 24 hours)
and booking early to get my return to home...another $5...so a total of $10 to get to the East coast from the midwest!

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 3:12:38 PM)

for the cost... it would be worth putting up with the discomfort...
Im too old for the adventure n enjoyment of hitching anymore.
Id probably take a gel pad or obus form for my poor old bones tho,
14 hours for me to get where I wanna go

SoulAlloy -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 3:43:37 PM)

The UK one isn't bad, I've used it a few times to get to London and back - pretty much impossible to sleep on one but have always been great value considering.

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 3:46:52 PM)

I used to use the london to lands end bus on a regular basis, only five hours, but spensive.
Mind you that was 20 years ago and more, no megabus then tho.
But will definitely use it when I get home again, so many people to visit all over!

How did you book it? Just for fun I tried to book Montreal to NYC and couldn't do it. Neither the US or Canadian site would let me.

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 4:07:19 PM)

I went to the US site, but they offer a direct route to DC from Toronto.
Gonna have a look:)
Looks like you would have to travel to Toronto, then thru to NYC.
From Montreal they only seem to do the one route.

littlewonder -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 4:42:30 PM)

when I was younger I used to do the megabus and other bus deals but as I get older I just can't stomach the crampness of the space, the lateness, the smells, etc....

These days when I travel I always either take the train or fly.

If you don't mind the things I mentioned though and you have the patience and time then it's a great and cheap way to go.

Lucylastic -> RE: MEGABUS???? (9/11/2011 4:47:42 PM)

I dont find planes to be any more comfy than bus's, or the smells, recycled air is horrendous for more than an hour,it give me migraines for days afterwards. Im not disagreeing with your comment at all, :) but for me personally I hate hate airports(did I say hate?) more than a bum numbing ride, arthritis will probably give me hell tho..
Back to the topic, my bad
