Abolition of death penalty in Germany: fist attempts 1848 (abolished in certain German states), then again 1919, finally abolished 1949 (West Germany - laste executions by the American military government 1951) and 1987 (GDR) - yes the Nazis were leading supporters of the death penalty - you can still find some of their arguments in wikipedia if you wish - very interesting ... Abolition of death penalty in Austria: first abolished 1787, re-introduced 1795, again abolished 1919, re-introduced 1934, abolished again 1950 Abolition of death penalty in Switzerland 1942, in France 1981 first country to abolish death penalty Grand Duchy of Tuscany 1786 (now part of Italy, just to mention it) Death penalty to abolish as a crime against human rights: European Convention of Human Rights 1983 UN Resolution 2004/67 and again 2007 just a few facts and right, I don't care about whether Troy Davis was guilty or (if so even worse) not guilty of his crimes death penalty as such has to be abolished as a crime against human rights
