Anytime a cop is the victim, you introduce doubt into the equation. Whether the ballistics analysis is outsourced has no bearing, as the cops collect and process the evidence. Anytime you marry that conflict of interest with a capital case, you have a train wreck. We have blatant judicial activism in the courts, and suddenly when it comes to capital cases, 'judicial activism' among the law enforcement ranks is suddenly impossible to you? You're right, unfortunately there's a back room atmosphere that prevails when a cop is the victim. Back in the 70s when my brother was a DC cop, if a cop was shot or injured and they caught the perp, a paddy wagon would show up with a handful of uniformed officers in the back. The perp would be given his ride to the station in the company of these cops and he's "be played the song of the woodwinds" on the way it. In some cities, it can be a lot worse and a lot more blatant than that these days. I have a great story about that brother in the intro phase of his next step up in DC. PM me sometime and I'll relate it.
