I know, I met the same myself, the sort of people who would indulge in criminal activities in civvy street

Just like non-criminals, some make good soldiers and some do not.

Two examples from my own experience:

1. The supply sergeant of my Ranger unit in Viet-Nam (Company P, 75th Army Rangers) had, by his own admission, been given the choice by a judge of enlisting in the military or going to prison (he had been the #2 guy in one of the nastiest street gangs in Philadelphia). He joined the Army, worked his way up to Sergeant First Class (E-7), got his GED diploma and Bachelor's Degree and eventually earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He always said that if the judge hadn't forced him to enlist, he probably wouldn't have made it to his 2st birthday.

2. A young soldier assigned to my platoon in Aschaffenburg, Germany (where I went after Viet-Nam) was arrested for purse-snatching. When I visited him in jail as his platoon sergeant, I asked him why he did it. He said that, before he entered the Army, he often snatched women's purses whenever he was short of cash and has done short jail stretches for it. Through him, the Army was able to trace back to the recruiting sergeant who falsified his criminal records check in order to meet the recruiter's monthly enlistment quota - and the recruiter went to Leavenworth military prison. The Army cut the soldier loose, he was convicted in a German court and served his sentence in a German prison (if I remember correctly, he got 10 years).

Some criminals make good soldiers - and some do not.

I don't disagree.  But that is a far cry from alluding to soldiers requiring no other skills than anger and the enjoyment of killing people.

That, and anyone having spent any time in the military would know that a great many of the soldiers have nothing to do with direct combat, and require only the most rudimentary training in "fighting".

Yeah, I always wondered about that, all those soldiers in admin roles, better to get rid of them and fill the posts with civvies, seeing as though admin soldiers haven't got much of a clue when it comes to fighting, hardly worth the expense to train them if that is all they are going to do.

I gather that is what has been happening of late.  I've had three sons in the military in the past couple of years, and have been shocked by what is now outsourced to civilians.  Personally, I suspect that is the major reason that the costs of the military have been skyrocketing.  It costs much more to hire civilians to do a job, and contracts with civilian companies can be abused.

Yep, I know, my job was replaced by civvies, but be that time I had resigned anyway, so really couldn't give a shit, except for the fact that if shit happened, who was going to protect the civvies, let alone the equipment, but governments being made of civvies who often have no concept whatsoever of the mechanics of the military beyond a cost deemed by many unnecessary especially in peacetime, only see what is good for their popularity, i.e. awarding contracts and giving civvies jobs, what costs are incurred are seen as worthwhile, for the simple reason, it is commerce getting the money, not the military.

The reality of all this, is when the shit hits the fan, which I hope it doesn't, but probably will given the modern world we live in, we will again be caught with our pants around our ankles with a politician's cock up the military's ass.

You understand of course, it is the politician's skill, or rather lack of skill that causes the youth of our country to spill blood and die on foreign battle fields.

But I do maintain it is the existence of a professional and highly skilled military that is the best peace keepers we can have, it is just a sore pity that wanker politicians abuse them so with their ill thought out schemes to gain themselves more public kudos.

But in the UK, the military is forbidden from engaging in politics, so it does make me wonder all this about homosexual men in the US military, unless it is of course your military can be both an apolitical fighting force there to protect their citizen's freedom and the American way and be political entities in themselves ? So, if it is not the military that is complaining about certain others, a minority's freedom perhaps, then it has just got to be a self serving politician trying to curry favour from somewhere, (I suspect those who call themselves religious, could be the target audience, given their often twisted political views on how everyone should live), by making a mountain out of a mole hill.
