i've been through a few dieticians. it's not that they don't know what they're doing, really, it's that they work to a 'type'. and very few of us conform to that type. what works for the stereotypical diabetic (I believe most medications and diagnostics are formulated for some mythical average male), won't work for every other diabetic.

what makes me ultra sensitive to fruits, won't make Steven sensitive in the same way. what i can handle in potatoes will shoot someone else's sugars out of their comfort range. what my lowest comfortable bsl would be someone else's high. none of our bodies react the exact same way to stress, to illness, to deadlines, to exercise. you take what you're told, and adjust it to fit your own self. that takes practice. that takes time. that takes working with your doctors and convincing them you know your own body. that takes listening to your body.

it's a ride, that's for sure.

Omg, i love tomatoes, i want them at every meal and during that TOM -- i want them with tons of salt.  My favorite are Roma Tomatoes.

Sighs, i can't have them as i like them anymore.  They make my blood sugar sky rocket.  :-(  And i don't know how to do moderation.

Tomatoes? That's interesting, I've never heard of tomatoes making blood sugar skyrocket. Then again you know what they say, if it tastes good it's bad for you lol.

It isn't always just the amount of sugar in the food that causes it, it can be other factors as well, which is why it varies so much from person to person. For example I can eat plums, nectarines and peaches, but apples push mine way up. But they didn't used to, that has only happened in the last year or so.

That's why the nutritionists here only give really vague advice and if you're having trouble keeping your levels in line they get you to keep a food diary so you can correlate between what you eat and your levels.

As far as I know, they have no real idea why one thing does it for one person and not another, or why it changes now and then. Too many potential variables I guess.

Well fire if you eat a normal amount lol they aren't. But I tend to have the Roma ones as if the are a food staple.

Which is what I mean when I say I suck at moderation. Sometimes I need to cut out a food because I am a gluten with certain foods that when I eat way too much my whole body feels it.

My sugars have dropped into the 250's.... yay for small changes. And I am the same with cherry tomatoes. I could sit and eat a whole container with no problem. I really think my biggest addiction is bread.

That ungodly thirst is gone.... and now I have to force myself to eat.

I understand the bread thing. I used to over-indulge in it often.

It's very difficult, but changing the way you eat entirely is the way to go. Doing it in certain incremental steps is how Bob Greene suggests doing it in his "The Best Life Diet" book.

I don't know about you, but for me, I have to stop eating certain things altogether - at least for a while - rather than make it smaller portions. For example, a few years ago, I recognized that I was eating far too much cheese. I stopped eating it altogether for one month. That seemed to be enough to manage the amount of cheese I would eat. I've had a couple of "moments" since then, but I recognize it and I'm able to cut back without eliminating it altogether. These days I'm eliminating cheese altogether and for the most part, I doubt I will eat it again. That choice came about from watching this.

P.S.

Good luck! And yay for the small victories...may they continue along with big ones. ;)

Nope, but if it uses artificial sweeteners, it may well either bung you up or give you the shits. Frozen yoghurt, perhaps?

(Your appetite will suffer until you've reduced your blood sugars a bit more. You're getting there if you aren't thirsty all the time anymore, though.)

I vaguely remember that but i remember the bars, remember sometimes times they do is use sugar alcohols in place of carbs.  So you will need to watch yourself and how it affects you.   I can't remember if i ever had any.

I have tried any of these but many people on some of the low carb sites i have frequented swear by Linda's site:

http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/dessert_recipes.html

One of my quick dessert fixes is a mock danish

egg, 1 packet of splenda, and cream cheese.  Mix the egg and some water together 1/2 packet of splenda, cook in microwave until egg scramble is almost done.  Drop a dolup of cream cheese and rest of splenda and finish cooking.  You can also add cinnamon to the egg.

Another is
can of pumpkin, cream cream cheese, 2 packets of splenda, and cinnamon or however you spell it.

1/2 cup of pumpkin, a dollop or 2 of cream cheese, splenda and cinnamon to taste -- Mix together and microwave until warm -- pumpkin pie without the pie.

Here's also something to be aware of --- or you may already know ===

The proteins, carbs and fats should always add up to the calorie count on the package, if they don't it more than likely means that sugar/carbs has been added in some way.  Always remember that anything under .5 doesn't need to be "counted" and they usually round down.  So 0 doesn't always mean zero and 4 grams of sugar could really mean 4.5 so if you eat more than one serving -- it could add up.    Also look at the ingredients the closer to the beginning an ingredient is the more of that than other ingredients are in the product.  So if sugar or sugar alcohols are close to the front -- you may want to skip it if it effects you oddly.

The product only claims 90 cals:  but the fats, proteins and carbs add up to 114 cals.   Which means that this product as an additional 24 calories that is not being counted in the calories  - because sugar alcohols are being shown, i would chalk the rest up to rounding issues -- those are usually called hidden carbs and many times are sugar alcohols.  This product has included the count for them.  Many products do not, especially ones that say sugar free or such on them.

As this product includes sugar alcohols in the label -- not all products do.   And for some diabetics they can be potent, but also can cause ummm dietary issues.

You want the calories to add up.

Which means you have to turn the grams into calories.  All your foods should really have the calories coming from 3 things -- Fats, Prot., and Carbs.  Depending on your particular plan, those calories should equate a concept of percentages of your whole.

Fats = 9 calories/gram
proteins = 4 calories/gram
Carbs - 4 calories/gram

Fats - 6g*9calories = 54
Protein - 2g*4 calories = 8
Carbs - 13g* 4 calories = 52

This adds up to 114, your label only states 90, so there technically out of the main concepts 24 calories that aren't accounted for in the label.   Sugar alcohols vary in amounts of cals in each.

It's not an exact science for mere mortals lol but it gives a general indication that maybe sugar alcohols have been included or some kind of "hidden carb".

I KNEW i was forgetting something when looking at that. Thanks angel

Bet you never thought I would say that, huh

Now, in regards to sugar alcohol, if they are listed, its half, yes?

Carbs 14
sugar 0
sugar alcohol 8
fiber 0

So the end result would be 10 in starches?
