Oh horseshit!! This is the fucking internet. When anybody makes a blanket statement without adding "this is my experience" someone, if not all of the people reading it will read it as a universal, not a personal statement. It's not that hard to add, "IME" or "IMO". Then you wouldn't have to get into an argument. Oh wait...maybe that's the point.

*backs out to find something more amusing to do with my time*

Maybe in your case, but not in mine. In fact anytime I read something someone says on this forum or any other I automatically assume it is their opinion based on their own experiences  unless they have quoted someone else or provided a link.

To the OP....I don't have much experience with diabetes but I recently heard that the sugar in maple syrup does not effect the blood levels the same as regular sugar. I am not sure if it is true or not, but you might want to ask around about it. If it's true it would be a good way to get something sweet without making yourself sick.

Ahhh...apparently I am a moron or perhaps an idiot. Or maybe both. Thank you for showing me who I truly am.

lots has been mentioned about different things that affect blood sugars - food, exercise, stress .... but one important one missing is illness. I find that with my girl if her blood sugars are out of whack (without cause) for a few days - I just KNOW she is going to get sick. Her sugars are a really good warning sign!

BTW tazzy, I've experienced that achilles tendon pain you have. It will heal, however, it took me 2 years, physical therapy and some very ugly shoes to do so.

Ugh.. I have been out of work for 6 months already. I see the local expert tomorrow... local as in Pittsburgh, which has some pretty great Drs already. Took me this long just to get an appointment.. from April.

Should be interesting.

truth be told, I stopped shaving. Just too darn tired after a hot shower to even be bothered these days.

Im hoping that will change soon.. in the mean time, braiding helps.

I'm sure you've heard that shopping healthy is focusing on purchases in areas around the perimeter of the store...'cause that's where the produce and the deli (if you're a meat/fish eater) sections are.

Are you familiar with the concept of eating clean? It's incorporating as many fresh foods as possible, eating minimal processed foods (actually eating next to none) and meals that are low in added fat and sugar. Here is a web site that talks about it, just in case you are not familiar with it. http://eatingcleanworks.com/what-is-eating-clean.html It's a big change to make. I don't believe anyone advocates doing it all overnight, but it's a good goal to strive for. :)

Good luck, tazzy.

If your blood sugars have been through the roof (which is what it sounds like), it'll take a while to get them back under control. Sounds like you're making some progress anyway.

Deviantly ain't wrong: the first thing they told me when I was diagnosed was to cut out the processed food completely. It might be worth checking the labels on the bread you're eating as well, as they even pump HFCS into that.

Lean proteins, sweet potatoes or butternut squash, broccoli or zucchini. Almonds for snacking between meals.

i'm not diabetic, but i've heard that drinking coffee and tea (black, green, oolong) helps to metabolise sugar. Something to ask your doctor about.

"Now, if only I could figure out what to buy at the grocery store.. lol "

Vinegar, citrus juice (I mean juice not that shit you drink on the exerbike), mixed nuts WITHOUT anything hydrogenated, spices out the ass, the spicier the better.

Butter, cheese, meat. Fuck all that pasta and sweet shit. People tell me to taste real food, well I do, and my blood sugar is as stable as the rock of Gibralter.

I said it once, I will not harp on it. And try to get some unrefined seasalt if you can.

That is all.

~FR

Went out today for a PT appointment. Ended up having to go for an MRI, and the machine was broken... so I had to wait and wait.

Long story short, I ate this morning at 7am, and didnt get back home until 7pm. Had not eaten all day. Bad decision. Was shaky, nauseated and clammy.... and more fuzzy headed than usual. We went to the grocery store, and I had an apple and a couple of peanut butter crackers before coming home.

Dinner was a small amount of pasta and a huge salad, light dressing. After the apple and crackers, BS was 277... 2 hours after dinner... 353.

~sighs

This is so depressing.

To make matters worse, I roamed aimlessly in the store. Could not figure out what to buy or not buy.

Its so easy to see why so many people get so frustrated with this disease.

tazzy - you should be carrying a quick source of sugar with you as well as something to snack on. Fruit-to-go strips si what I carry for my little girl. You can also get glucose tablets at the pharmacy. A juice box in your purse is a fast fix for those lows. carry your meter with you!!

and don't worry too much about that high reading after dinner. when you have a low blood sugar like you experienced, it is not uncommon to have a "rebound" high. your body knows you're short of sugar, so the liver dumps a bunch of glycogen into your bloodstream.

also, check with your pharmacy to see if they offer shopping tours. We have one coming up in a few weeks where a dietician takes us through the store and talks about things like reading labels and better food choices
