Yeah, I'm one of the congratulators, and yeah, I consider it like coming 'out' or like popping an intellectual hymen: painful and unlikely to be unpopped, but hope it's a lot of fun living well but free of the burden of arbitrary religious guilt. Oopsies! but the msg was intended to be supportive and sororal, nothing more.

I stayed out of Cheri's thread until the very end, because talk about god and religion bores me to tears. But I was curious why she felt the need to make such a big announcement of her decision.

I may see the offering of such sites to Cheri, as she is still finding her way. Could he helpful to ask questions of those who do not believe without the accusations of those who do.

However, with Hannah, who has long held her position, I dont see the point.

Yah, that thread was doomed to failure. The large majority of people in society as a whole, not just in the states or canada, cannot discuss religeon without being snarky or rude. Every time you say something logical or inteligient, it makes them analyze the fallacies of thier religeon. And every time that happens, they naturally fall into a defensive nature. Not all religeos people have this kind of reaction though. Really I shouldn't lump them all together. I've had very good discussions with Taoists and Hindus. It's usually Christians, Catholics, Islamists, and Athiests that suffer from this irrational behavior. I have managed to have a total of 2 productive and insightfull discussions with Christians in my entire life, rest just turned into enraged tantrums.

To be honest I was surprised at how tame the discussion went, I was expecting the mods to have to jump in on that one, even though some of the posters were more interested in converting rather than helping her find her own answers. Shit happens.

We do not. I congratulated her for abandoning a primitive and absurd religion, regardless of her embracing Atheism or not. A deist has a hundred times better religion as a Christian.

Having been in many aheist discussions, it is more like:
Atheist1: People who believe in god are suffering from some mental disorder.
Atheist2: That's not so clear, a delusion is only a disorter if ... (follows arguments from psychology).
Atheist3: But that only shows up how psychology is biased, for (more arguments).
Etc...

Your image is a strawman. Atheist only agree on, that they do not believe in God. They do not even agree on, that there is no god, much less about how to prove it, if it can be prove, how are theists, what to do about it, and so on.

No, I did. She said something about not wanting to derail another thread, and posted a lengthy conversation with Tazzy (as I recall).. She could have achieved the same thing (not derailing another thread) by telling Tazzy (or whoever it was) that it was a personal decision and to mind their own fucking business. It made no sense why she felt the need to defend, or explain, or whatever the hell she was doing, enough to start a thread about it and then go on for page after page.

Thank you for the explanation on the first point. Sorry I misunderstood.
No, they don't. In English, Atheism describes both the "weak" and the "hard" positions, where some of them do not say "There is no God". They just do not say "There is a God" either. Some, for example, Russell or Drange, say that the question cannot be answered. Drange even says that it is not a question at all.
As long as English puts Agnosticists in the concept of Atheist, atheist do not agree on, that there is no God.
