HannahLynHeather -> what's with the atheists? (10/8/2011 5:17:16 PM)

ok, its no secret that i am very much an ardent atheist. i have noticed something a little fucking weird lately. in response to my posts on the "can we be good without god" thread i have received several cmails congratulating me on my atheism, and inviting me to join various atheist discussion groups. in the wake of her renouncing christianity thread, cheri received many similar messages.

this leads me to wonder about things a little.

first. why the fuck do these atheists automatically equate a rejection of christianity with atheism. cheri stated repeatedly that she still believed in a higher power, just not the one of the abrahamic religions, yet she still got shit loads of congratulatory mail from atheists. what the fuck?  do they lose the ability to read along with their belief? fucking proselytes is what they are, no different from the fuckers who come knocking to spread the word.

second. congratulating somebody on being an atheist seems like a really fucking weird thing to do, to congratulate somebody on not believing in a fairy tale, i mean when was the last time you walked up to some fucker and said "way to go for not believing in the easter bunny dude"? i mean its not as if it takes any fucking effort to not believe. its not like its an accomplishment of any great import, anybody with a brain cell or two can do it, all it takes is a minute or two of honest reflection and then that's it, no further thought or effort required, your done with the issue for life and can move on to other questions and issues that have some actual fucking importance.

third. what the fuck would you have to discuss on an atheist discussion group? i mean what more is there to say to each other? do they discuss just what denomination of non-belief they follow, or how they don't interpret various passages in the various holy books they don't believe are revelatory? got me fucking stumped that's for sure.

edited to fix the fucked up numbering of points.

Hey Heather - way to keep an open mind!

The congrats is for coming out, so to speak, and telling the world, or at least this fettid little part of it, that you no longer accept the BS. The invites, mine included, are merely efforts to help make you feel welcome in one of most hated communities on Earth. Sort of like when someone mentions they're into BD/SM to a friend who then recommends CM, FL, Alt, etc. But then again, why would you want to hang-out with like-minded people? After all, it's BD/SM - how much is there to talk about...?

Take it or leave it. As mom used yo say: it's nose skin off my ass.

Best of luck in your journies.

~Dave

Congratulations are extended for adult Baptisims.  Parents are congratulated for "bringing another soul" to the Church upon the baptism of their child. (And the ritual circumsicion of young men is celebratead heavily.  Some coversions in adult life require a circumsicion as well.)

Congratulations are extended for Bar (and Bas) Mitzvahs, Confirmations and First Communions.

So, we have at least some examples of Congratulations being given for continued belief IN the fairy tales, so your "Easter Bunny" analogy doesn't hold.

ETA:  Can't answer for Atheists in general as to why they equate rejection of certain portions of  THE answer to the God "question" as a rejection of all portions. Maybe you should ask them individually....  After all, there is NO "Canon Law" for Atheists to follow. LOL!

Yes, I realize she got hammered and you are helping with the frustration, but I'm guessing most, if not all, the CMails she received were trying to be helpful. (I know at least mine was trying to be helpful.  And I KNOW I didn't invite her to any such groups.)

TheHeretic -> RE: what's with the atheists? (10/8/2011 5:52:19 PM)

For some, "atheism" is simply a more politically correct way of saying they hate Christians. I occasionally detect some real persecution and martyrdom complexes at work too, which seems a little ironic.

C'mon, Hannah. Ya'll are hot, and most men don't really believe lesbians can't be brought around. Any fucking excuse at all to start a conversation. [;)]

why? what's the fucking accomplishment? do you congratulate people for being kinky, or female, or republican? see it just doesn't fucking follow.

oh you mean like being a craddle-robbing, sadistic, masochistic, poly, lesbian, foul-mouthed, ex-junkie, ex-hooker, anarchistic, switch who doesn't know when to shut the fuck up? fuck me bucky, atheist is the least of the fucking problems i have to deal with.

Evangelistic atheism!

Which is precisely why its a religion.

Hey HEather:

This is a fairy tale too:

quote:

The Boy Who Cried Wolf

There once was a shepherd boy who was bored as he sat on the hillside watching the village sheep. To amuse himself he took a great breath and sang out, "Wolf! Wolf! The Wolf is chasing the sheep!"

The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.

"Don't cry 'wolf', shepherd boy," said the villagers, "when there's no wolf!" They went grumbling back down the hill.

Later, the boy sang out again, "Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!" To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away.

When the villagers saw no wolf they sternly said, "Save your frightened song for when there is really something wrong! Don't cry 'wolf' when there is NO wolf!"

But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.

Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and sang out as loudly as he could, "Wolf! Wolf!"

But the villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn't come.

At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn't returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.

"There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, "Wolf!" Why didn't you come?"

An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village.

"We'll help you look for the lost sheep in the morning," he said, putting his arm around the youth, "Nobody believes a liar...even when he is telling the truth!"

Real0ne -> RE: what's with the atheists? (10/8/2011 7:15:42 PM)

Who would be foolish enough to believe a fairy tale?

quote:

Visiting The Lion's Cave

There once was a lion who was too lazy to hunt for his food. He pretended to be very sick and announced to all the animals that he was soon to die.

"Please," he said, "come visit me in my cave and bid me goodbye."

The lion looked so weak and helpless, the animals felt sorry for him. One by one the visitors came. One by one, the lion ate his fill of them!

When fox arrived to pay his last respects, he stopped in front of the cave's entrance and looked closely at the ground.

"Come in quickly, I am dying!" cried the sly lion, impatiently.

"No," said the fox, who was equally clever, "You'll not have ME for a visitor, though you moan and pout. While I see many footprints going into your cave, NONE are coming out!"

Every one knows that lions and foxes dont talk to one another!

i don't know the answers to your questions, but i have one of my own. i am a very much a tepid atheist. i don't believe a Christian god or any other higher power, but i don't much care what anyone else believes. (At least, until some fanatic starts banning books or the teaching of evolution in school, or shooting abortion doctors, etc.; before that point i don't care.)

What makes somebody ardent about their atheism? To me, that's as bizarre as congratulating someone on their atheism.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: what's with the atheists? (10/8/2011 7:27:38 PM)

i say "ardent" because i have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that there is no god of any description, nor has there ever been. And i also am convinced that theism is in fact a form of mental illness.

Then congratulating someone on their atheism doesn't seem like such a strange idea. Are you SURE you don't understand?

HannahLynHeather -> RE: what's with the atheists? (10/8/2011 7:45:23 PM)

what's to congratulate them on?

first. why the fuck do these atheists automatically equate a rejection of christianity with atheism.

Intellectual laziness. It must be an easy to make that assumption in a predominately Christian country.

cheri stated repeatedly that she still believed in a higher power, just not the one of the abrahamic religions, yet she still got shit loads of congratulatory mail from atheists. what the fuck?  do they lose the ability to read along with their belief?

Some atheists also lack reading comprehension skills. i am a perfect example.

fucking proselytes is what they are, no different from the fuckers who come knocking to spread the word.

And then there are those who tell theists they're suffering from some kind of mental disorder, as opposed to patting other atheists on the back.

second. congratulating somebody on being an atheist seems like a really fucking weird thing to do, to congratulate somebody on not believing in a fairy tale, i mean when was the last time you walked up to some fucker and said "way to go for not believing in the easter bunny dude"? i mean its not as if it takes any fucking effort to not believe. its not like its an accomplishment of any great import, anybody with a brain cell or two can do it, all it takes is a minute or two of honest reflection and then that's it, no further thought or effort required, your done with the issue for life and can move on to other questions and issues that have some actual fucking importance.

i guess atheists are as capable of smugness as anyone else.

third. what the fuck would you have to discuss on an atheist discussion group?

i dunno, maybe something about how people who believe in god are suffering from mental illness?

look at my last post is it not atheist rational?

pretty fucking cute. you are still the most dangerous debating opponent on the boards, but no fucking cigar this time. that would be like discussing the fact that the sky is blue, it's simply an obvious conclusion.

HannahLynHeather -> RE: what's with the atheists? (10/8/2011 8:10:43 PM)

atheist discussion board.
freethinker: i don't believe in god.
godsucks: whoa! me either dude!
freethinker: really? wow, what are the odds of that?
godsucks: i know, blows my mind.
liberatedchick: OMG!! like me either.
freethinker: this is just getting creepy.
