Religious guilt is guilt that springs from religious beliefs, therefore religion is to blame for religious guilt, because without the religion, the guilt wouldn't be there. Hopefully you now get this very simple concept of cause and effect.

Yeah....I can't explain it to you. You don't have the comprehension skills for it.

EmilyRocks -> RE: what's with the atheists? (10/9/2011 3:42:49 AM)

No one cares what you say think. Just ask them. They will tell you. [:D]

If religion causes guilt, why doesnt every person who is exposed to religion feel quilty?

Sorry for the derail.

SMM, what on earth makes you think people here care if you hide them? I've seen the words I quote above all over the place and they always make me laugh. You seem to have a higher opinion of the impact of your words than anyone else here.

Agreed, Rich, but I think for the vast majority it's simply a lack of belief in God and/or a rejection of religion. Me, I believe in God and Jesus but reject the religion that goes hand in hand with it. Think of it as God and Jesus being my "higher power".

What on Earth makes you think I think that?
Seriously!
I do not care if they care or not. I simply inform them for education, because I was educated that way - before you stop hearing at somebody, you tell her. For the case that he then decides to stop speaking. Just to keep this person informed. Good manners - I would say - minmal manners. If you are going to commit the act of ignoring somebody, you warn beforehand.
That's it.
It is like... saying "hello" when you arrive the office. Maybe people care, maybe not. But you say "hello" because you were educated that way. Do you really care if they care? Often - not a bit. But you do it anyway.
Best regards.

Well the grand announcements for one thing. Personally I just hide them. <shrugs>

Edited, see above. They are not "grand".
Some other reason?

uh, you made a statement that i questioned. what all the humpty dumpty shit has to do with anything, well fucked if i know. but then again i don't have a clue what you are on about half the time, like that bullshit society of the spectacle  thing you keep insisting i read. i mean what the fuck do i want with some marxist tract?

It's more postmodernist than Marxist, in fact (though like most '60s French intellectuals with a foothold in academia, baudrillard leans a lot to the left).
My own suspicion would be that SpanishHat likes that one because it allows him to claim that anything he dislikes isn't as real as he is, and so can be ignored, even if it doesn't go away...

C'mon, Hannah. Ya'll are hot, and most men don't really believe lesbians can't be brought around. Any fucking excuse at all to start a conversation. [;)]

This pretty much nails it.

No, that's pretty much bullshit.

I never bring up my lack of belief until someone starts preaching about their beliefs.

I have a friend who I go out and have drinks with and every conservation she manages to tell everyone about her Lord and Savior.

And it gets worse the more shit-faced she becomes.

So you're blaming "religion" and the belief in God for the burden of arbitrary religious guilt?
If it is religious guilt, then what else would you blame but religion?

Read the rest of my post.

People can try and apply guilt, but it's the recipient who chooses whether or not to take it on as guilt.

Edited to add:

It's people that use "guilt". Religion in and of itself doesn't apply it. Religion is a system. A system doesn't have emotion. The people involved in the system are the ones with that.

Then explain me to me the Catholic concept of baptism.

According to the dogma a new-born baby has "original sin".

How does that happen?

And you don't think religions instill guilt in their followers?

Oh come on!!!!

The Bible, the Koran, the Torah, the Book of Mormon, are all designed to teach people how to live and then make them feel guilty for not obeying the rules.

Can you say the Ten Commandments?

I'm not sure specifically what you are referring to, but if you are referring to the sins of Adam then you are right.

I've been seeing this lately in this forum, the claim that leftists hate Christians, and now atheists hate Christians. I could think of a lot of adjectives, but not hate. So who are all these hating atheists?

I don't consider Hannah's viewpoint to be hatred at all, but exactly what she says:

quote:

And i also am convinced that theism is in fact a form of mental illness.

But she'll correct me if I'm wrong [:D]

I was taught in psychology classes that no one can make you feel anything.

Not everyone has the ability to feel guilt. Not everyone wants to feel guilty. Not everyone needs to feel guilty. Do you think politicians feel guilty for he money they stole from us? Yet they still supposedly follow their religions.

No thanks needed. I try to help wherever I can. :D

Yeah, I think that is another case of Heretic projecting. I'm an atheist, and I have an extremely close friend who is not only a member of Republican Women of America, but is also extremely active in her (Episcopal) church. I think the good she does is praiseworthy. I've known her for 17 years; she's the kind of person one can call at 3AM with debilitating pain (the kind that takes away your ability to stand or sit up), and she'll immediately be there. Because she was. And I'll be there whatever she needs to get done (and have been). THAT'S a friendship.

She's a Christian. As opposed to an Xstian, who are the 2 hours on Sunday pious/jerkoff asshole adulterer/rip-off artist "businessman" the rest of the week.

No, this new "Atheists hate Christians" rightwing meme is simply more Goebbelsian propoganda aimed straight at the feeble-minded non-thinking fear-filled conservative "base".
