Hannah, stay on topic or start your own thread.  While those concepts are interwoven in the discussion its not the discussion in and of itself.

Thanks, angel

Angel, if you think most kids tell their parents what they are up to you are sadly mistaken. It's the rare kid who is going to tell her parents she is texting topless pics to boys which IS the reality of kids today. Sure there are kids who have open talks with their parents but I very much doubt the vast majority are telling their parents stuff like that.

My point exactly.   When they are sexually mature enough to not see what they are doing as wrong, then to me, they should wear the shirts.  The fact that they are hiding it tells me that this is about the sexually connotated shirt NOT raising funds for breast cancer.

But also, the school has a responsibility -- all they need is ONE kid to make a joke and squeeze a girls breast and all hell would break loose on the schools head.

Angel,

My post was in response to this:

quote:

Many of us have 1) kids, 2) nieces and nephews etc that age.  I would think parents of kids know what the norm of acceptance is nowadays also.  I would BET the NORM is that these kids know doing so is wrong, they hide it, they keep it a dirty lil secret and are making damn sure mom and dad don't find out or if they do it in school the school doesn't find out.

Now you are turning around and making it once again about the specific incident. These are two different issues. Please pick one and I'll respond to it.

kthxbye

you know what? fuck this argument, i'm going to commission one of the girls' surveys.

we'll ask
1. have they ever sexted/topless camed while in high school
2. would they ever have told their parents at the time.
     2a. if not, why not.

what else do should we ask?

Perhaps you should ask what any of that has to do with the subject of this thread?

The school admin made a call that was, in their opinion, the best decision for everyone this particular fundraiser would touch.

Whether you agree or disagree with their decision, it has nothing to do with whether teens are sexting or showing their tits to others on a cellphone.

In my mind it's an entirely appropriate cause with these particular shirts being an inappropriate way for underage girls to express support for it. There are other things that would work in this instance as far as slogans go that would be more appropriate. Why does it have to ride the line of being lascivious? Why do you have to push the envelope on this when something else would work just fine?

QFT. I am a manager in a large library system. We just got a memo saying that, this coming weekend, we could wear shirts about breast cancer awareness/Race for the Cure. In a humorous way, it was spelled out that we obviously needed to be aware of the tolerance level of others (meaning not only co-workers but mainly the library-using public at large) and that this may not be the day for our "Save the TaTa's" t-shirt, hint, hint. When you're representing something besides yourself whether it be the library system, your school or whatever, I don't care what your age is. Show some respect. You can express anything you want on your free time. Everything that pops into your mind or onto a tshirt is not appropriate at all times in all places. That would seem to be common sense but, in this day and time, people seem to think the exact opposite. But they'd be wrong..........luci

Firewithin, all of my posts are about the topic and the incident.

To me, this has moved from supporting breast cancer to a self-serving thumbing their noses at people who told them no.
That you have such a narrow and inflexible puritanical view of things really doesn't surprise me. To be honest, I expected nothing else from you.

Now, bye, I'm off to feel some bumps for lumps...have fun wringing your hands over the poor innocent little darlings who are flashing their titties to their boyfriends on webcam as we speak.

Your views are as narrow and inflexible as anyone else on this board, so really, I expect nothing else from you, than to think all high school cheerleaders are flashing their tits and dreaming of being felt up.

It amazes me that you are so fast to scream about being talked down to as a young person, when you do the exact same thing to anyone who does not agree with your "everything has a simple answer and yall are too old and ignorant to understand it" ideals.

[sm=applause.gif] Butcha know, JstAnotherSub, one is only "narrow and inflexible" when one dares to disagree with her/their dogma and that reverse ageism bull is obvious in most posts. What is good for the goose is not good for the gander in that world[:'(] Just let it go in one ear and out the other so to speak because there's no way to intelligently debate with someone who calls your every point ageist and narrow. It's so not worth trying........luci

<shrugs> I think I'll take the "narrow" view of someone within the age range of the girls in the OP over the "narrow" views of those of us who are far from it.

Firewithinme, there really is no right or wrong answers lol  So pick whichever you need too.  Its a discussion, people are debating their positions.   The school has made the choice it did -- so the incident is past.

Pick what you need to in order to support your views.   People will judge your comments accordingly and debate with you about it or ignore it.

That's why its called a discussion board.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Breast Cancer T-Shirts for Cheerleaders (10/16/2011 8:21:31 AM)

Yeah, lawd knows 4 poly lesbians living in Canada speak for all the teenaged girls in America.  Nevermind that the decision this thread discusses has nothing at all to do with what kids are doing or not doing, it has to do with what is acceptable for a school event.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Breast Cancer T-Shirts for Cheerleaders (10/16/2011 8:24:39 AM)

I'm not saying they are speaking for ALL, I'm saying that they no doubt have a better idea of what is going on out there than we do. But hey if it makes you feel better go ahead and twist my words. <shrugs>

barelynangel -> RE: Breast Cancer T-Shirts for Cheerleaders (10/16/2011 8:25:44 AM)

You know, this thread is beginning to turn into a train wreck.  I appreciate everyone who came here to discuss the topic and their views -- yes Heather even you because you at least were discussing it.

Enjoy whatever this thread becomes.

the point was raised when people said it was age inappropriate.  the point is to show that that isn't the fucking case.

You can not disprove opinions though Hannah.  All of us have our opinion.  The principal had his opinion.  His is the one that carries the weight here.

My opinion is he was right.  Yours is he was wrong.  No amount of polling will change either of our opinions, nor will it validate one as correct.  It just is what it is.

littlewonder -> RE: Breast Cancer T-Shirts for Cheerleaders (10/16/2011 9:22:26 AM)

sorry but when my daughter was a teenager I didn't really care if SHE thought something was appropriate or not. It mattered if I thought it was or not. If I said it wasn't she didn't leave the house wearing it. If I found out she was doing something I thought was wrong she was in trouble for it.

A teenager is not an adult and my teenager lived in my home and what I said was the law. Therefore if I said wearing that tshirt to school or anywhere else was innapropriate she didn't leave the house with it on and if I found out later that she even owned the shirt, she would have been grounded and the shirt thrown away in the garbage. I would have told her to volunteer or participate in something to raise money for breast cancer awareness...not flaunt around her tits.

GreedyTop -> RE: Breast Cancer T-Shirts for Cheerleaders (10/16/2011 9:25:48 AM)

lw.. FLAUNTING TITS?

really?

it's a slogan on a tshirt.. no different than wearig a tshirt that advertises the local restaurant. Just because the slogan isnt to your liking does NOT mean she is FLAUNTING HER TITS.

This. I remember one time in particular when I had a button on my purse that was inappropriate. I don't remember this specific button - as I went through a button phase and I had tons of them - but my mother kept track and she had me remove one and get rid of it.

I do the same for my daughter, and I will continue to do so. Regardless of what children actually do, it's my responsibility to raise her with what I feel are important values. I feel this is not the most respectful way to address the issue, and so I would teach her to raise funds in a more appropriate manner. Just like anybody, when she's on her own, she can make her own decisions. While I'm raising her, and especially while she is young and may not be thinking of all the ramifications of a decision, I will guide her where I can - and she won't be wearing any reference to breasts on her body. Ain't happening.

I'm only 25. Is that too far removed? Only 7 years out of high school.
