Polite words which show a modicum of thought (spelling and grammar checked) capitalizing according to prevailing conventions would never offend me.  Deference is a wonderful thing in my world view...  and when words are all there are capping my name in an email and not capping his would not seem untoward. Doing the Y/y just seems bit over the top. … and as has been mentioned – gets rather quickly difficult to read.
Honorifics are optional if I don’t know someone. If I do know them, then they know how to address me.  I can take offense with people who insist on addressing me as Mistress even after I have requested that they not do so, even if it is ‘just’ a chat room.
I’ll pass on the Y/y cap thing… and on using the third person for self reference… best wishes. LdyS

I will now insist that people only speak to me and refer to me in caps, online as well as in real life, lol.

On a more semi-serious note, ever see anyone cap their own but go out of their way to type everyone else's name in lower case? Talk about somebody needing an enema.....

I'm wondering..some of you doms/dommes refer to yourselves with a capitalized first letter.....but then others don't, it's just a matter preference I do know that, but do Y/you..(?) get offended if people refer to you without using the capitalized letter? E.g. I'm not used to capitalize first letter unless it's in a chatroom I visit sometimes since in there it is a rule, but otherwise I don't pay attention to it, 'cause it really doesn't make any sense to me, you're the same dominant (in my eyes) with or without the caps so I've been wondering if it really does offend you?

As an English major and an aspiring writer, I never quite understood the caps/no caps way of speak.
I guess the nuns beatings worked, because I only use caps when necessary....i.e. first and foremost when I am speaking of Sir(always capped) and of course the beginning of a sentence.  Now naturally, when I visit the chatrooms, if the name has a cap letter then I type a cap letter, but otherwise I do not.  I see some come into the chatrooms and it is "goodmorning A/all"  to me that is just silly.  Now granted when I first started going to the chatrooms, I too did that, but then I thought to myself, Why?  You were not taught to write that way, so I stopped.

To me if the person's name is capitalized then cap it, other wise pfffffffffffffffffffffffft

I don’t care much either way. I don’t frequent chat rooms anymore, and that’s the only place I really see it being done, so it doesn’t apply to my life. If I have a sub who writes a lot and wants to learn that type of netiquette, I’ll teach them how to do it and let them choose if they want to use it.
I always lift my eyebrows when I see someone getting all anal about capitalizing. Whether it’s insisting that people use it, or getting all annoyed when it’s being used. It just makes me think "man, these people have way too much time on their hands."
It doesn’t bother me when other people do it. It doesn’t bother me if they don’t. I really have much more important things in life to concern myself with than other people’s typing quirks.

hmmmmm... well, with regard to caps, I don't mind the D/s stuff online (capping Dom/mes and not subs).  I don't much care for the Y/you, U/us, W/we part, as I find it hard to read.

What drives me NUTS is getting chewed out for SHOUTING when I occasionally cap a whole word for enunciation factors.  This has happened on a number of occasions, or I've watched some 'subbie' rip another to shreads over 'shouting' in the room!  goodlord!  I think we have OTHER things to worry about!  (though, it has been proven all-caps is harder to read...and I'd agree)

While I tend to cap Dominant names and not submissives...I see my own nic is capped and I'm quite submissive; so go figure!  Generally I'll just type the nic as it's written, if I'm not sure and don't care enough about the 'person' to go read their profile.

The whole W/we, U/us, O/ours stuff drives me nuts, as it's so hard to read.

But the part that really amazes me is when I cap an ENTIRE word for enunciation factors...and get chewed out ROYALLY for it.  It's the funniest thing to see some new 'subbie' rip someone to shreads for SHOUTING in the room.   Sometimes I think we go a little over the tip, huh?

Okay, I understand all-caps is hard for the human eye to read, as we discern words by the shapes of them... so, I don't use all-caps, either.  <shrugs>

I don't find respect or lack thereof in someone's typing skills or habits (dom OR sub).  However, I do think the upper case/ lower case letter beginning a name comes in very handy on the internet.  It's just easier to know immediately who chooses a dominant preference as opposed to who chooses one of submission. I think some take this concept too far when they begin to capitalize words like "Myself" and "Me" in mid-sentence.  That comes off as a little bit too self-important for my taste.  I agree with the masses on the Y/you, W/we, O/our thing.  I don't even know how people manage to type that out without going batty, nevermind proof-read it.  Its just another issue born of  "internet ds".  Now we have to consider proper typing etiquette as it applies to bdsmers.  In real life you can't hear if someone calls you Sir/Ma'am with a cap or not.  It just gets funnier and funnier, as we continue to hash things out that 'vanilla' people would fall asleep reading.

I wonder how S/switches refer to themselves in "type".  hahahahahaaaaaaa  (or did someone beat me to that one already?)

The cap nocap was a convention started on IRC chatrooms to prevent the room from being flooded with questions,
"are you Dominant" or " are you submissive" By using cap/nocap it saves manny an embarrassing moment when a Dom hits on a Dome
thinking they were subs.

A lot of times this orientation can be determined by the user's ID such as DominOklahoma or LeathrMaster
but not always such as "Alebeard" or"swansong."

Some people do get pissy about it but not many.

ugh.......i guess its a matter of preference B/but T/this T/thing R/really G/gets O/on M/my N/nerves I/i M/mean W/whats T/the P/point R/really?????

besides....if you assume that it is some sort of rule....take a lession from Spanish.....when you refer to a feminine group, you use a feminine article, male for male....& male for a mixed group.......so when speaking to M/mixed company....it seems to me that the Dominant would outweigh the sub & a simple Capital letter would suffice....

what do Y/you think?

rolling in sarcasm....

Seriously....why?  So that everyone can immediately start playing D/s roles with them?  So that it's more convenient to shop for a dating, mating or roleplaying partner?  Is there any other legitimate reason that you need to know someone's sexual orientation before engaging in social conversation with them?  Or is it strictly for the purpose of partner-fishing expeditions?

As someone who doesn't cyberplay and isn't seeking a partner, it is definitely not to my advantage to hang my orientation on my sleeve so that strangers can start instantly drooling on me, wanking at me, roleplaying with me or otherwise being annoying as hell.   I hate being treated like a cardboard cut-out domme image that any stranger can use as a room prop to act out his fantasies of submission.  That's not something I consent to on any level, so if I don't know a person, they need to either talk to me like a real human being, or they will not be talking to me at all.

When I hang out on a forum or in a chat room, I'm just there to socialize in a friendly way with other scene folk.  It is **none of a stranger's business** what my sexual or kink orientation is, not if they intend to use that knowledge to try to interact with me in a way that I don't welcome from strangers.  I can get what I personally want out of a chat room just fine without ever discussing the details of what I do in the bedroom or the dungeon with my partners.

Granted, if you are actively shopping for a partner, it makes a lot of sense to wear your heart on your sleeve and identify yourself to all and sundry.  But if you're just there to socialize and to chat with other scene folk on a strictly friendly basis to swap ideas and information, it just gets annoying when people insist on knowing your role so that they can start roleplaying with you right off the bat.

Bah.  What's the "accepted online convention" for spelling your name if your preferred orientation is "Neither dominant nor submissive to YOU, dammit."

As a Dom, I don't care. I'm more honored if submissives want to cap my pronouns. On the sub side, I use proper capitalization most of the time. I tend to cap pronouns for Dom/mes that I highly respect, especially any that I'm considering or who actually own me. This way, it's special. If I capped every Dom/mes pronouns, it's not very special is it? This way, I can make the Dom/mes who are special to me actually feel special.

I just can't stand the S/slashes. Makes it hard to read. If I use a plural pronouns, such as we or them, I just cap them as they fit into the sentences grammitically. I'll cap "You" and "Her" and "She" when referring to a specific Domme that I respect.
