Ok. I may have had a bit of fun with the thread title, but the quotes from protesters towards the end of the piece are what caught my eye.

Occupy Wall Street may be trying very hard to remain undefined, but they are defining themselves nicely, all the same.

HannahLynn -> RE: OWS protesters attacked by water cannons - one near fatality! (10/23/2011 7:49:49 AM)

a little fun? you mean fucking lying to make fun of them. and as far as defining them, you and your ilk sure as fuck have been trying your hardest to do that ever since they began now haven't you bubbles?

TheHeretic -> RE: OWS protesters attacked by water cannons - one near fatality! (10/23/2011 7:58:09 AM)

You seem all chipper and cheerful this morning, Hannah.

The desire to remain a blank slate makes perfect sense for the group. People will come to write their own vision, and lend power to the movement.

As an anarchist, shouldn't you be calling them out, and opposing them, anyway?

erieangel -> RE: OWS protesters attacked by water cannons - one near fatality! (10/23/2011 8:34:24 AM)

What is wrong with the quotes at the end?  I'm involved with the occupy movement because while I work a full-time job at which I may not make a lot of money, but it is enough to pay the basic bills...for disposable income, I have a second job.  Most importantly, I enjoy both jobs.  However, my son is disabled and has not seen a COLA to his social security since 2008; my pregnant daughter had to go to work full time when her husband lost his job when his company decided to relocate in TX and my granddaughter, who isn't even born yet, will spend her working life paying off a debt caused by the Bush and Obama wars.  And all while the wealthiest 1% of Americans continue to be rewarded with more and more tax cuts and even greater economic, social and political power in this country.

And you are definining yourself nicely.

What caught my eye first is that it was from the bastion of conservatism known as Orange County.

The second thing that caught my eye were the comments to the article.

Here was the first one from a typically tolerant conservative who is willing to hear all viewpoints [8|].

So glad the sprinklers went off. This is probably the only shower they had in weeks. The unions and teachers will wake up when Obama is retired. They have held us hostage and people realize everyday how they have hurt this economy. The tea party people were clean and had a message.....these protesters haven't a clue what they want. Most are socialists/marxists and only want a hand out. Sorry folks it ain't gona work.

Let's look at some facts Richie, conservatives have been stirring the pot and creating conflict for three decades now.

So don't blame the OWS movement for getting right back in their face.

Gotta love the one that said they should have sprayed them with urine instead.

Your birthright entitles you to citizenship in this nation, not financial support and assistance in handling your resources. Expecting the government to lavish you with luxuries, educational assistance and medicines or medical treatments is common but common does answer the call to self-reliance.

Did I say there was anything "wrong" with the quotes, Erieangel? I said they caught my eye, and are the sort of thing that defines the movement, whether the mysterious organizers like it or not.

Do you think that financial difficulties within your family somehow grants you the moral high ground? News flash for you: things are tough all over. Personally, I work in a field that is largely immune to economic ups and downs, but it's a high stress environment, and turnover runs high in any economy. Some would say that's just a matter of luck, I say I wanted that sort of job, and took a hell of a risk to make it happen. My wife, on the other hand, lost a very good job, and is currently working way below her skill level, and old income. One of my oldest and dearest friends is waiting for the letter that tells him when he has to get out of his house, and my very oldest and dearest friend hasn't had decent, steady work in three years. The only reason he and his son still have their own roof over their heads is because his mother doesn't want them moving in with her, and pays the rent for them.

Where in my post does it even imply that I expect the government to lavish me with luxuries??  As for educational assistance or health care--I do believe both those things are a right not a luxury.

Ah then lets get rid of child labor laws... those pesky things only interfer with the ability of business to make a profit.. and lord knows we can pay the little buggers a lot less.

Lets get rid of mandatory education for children while we are at it... only those who can afford to educate their children should have educated children.

Lets get rid of discrimination laws... again, its a huge cost to businesses...

Lets get rid of wage laws all together... they should only be paid what the employer feels they are worth.

Now, back to reality... when businesses go into such effort to control the ability of their workers to make a decent living, when they price services (such as health care) so far out of reach that people are forced to liquidate all their savings for the sake of their lives... when the Government endorces such actions... then.. yes... Its the governments responsibility to take care of those people.

Ok, so I guess I misconstrued your "interesting" to mean you saw something wrong it.  But you aren't quite right in saying that those quotes define the movement--there are as many definitions of the movement as there are supporters.

Demonstrator Mats Andres, 23, of Huntington Beach pointed out that until money is taken out of politics, nothing will change.
"It really doesn't matter who gets elected as long as corporations can buy politicians on the free market," said Andres, who majored in political science at UC Santa Barbara and works full time as an inventory supervisor for an online consignment business.

I couldnt agree more.
