Can Obama Do Stimulus by Decree?

quote:

Obama Campaign Rolls Out Next Phase of Jobs Pitch

“The only way we can truly attack our economic challenges is with bold, bipartisan action in Congress. The president will continue to pressure Congressional Republicans to put country before party and pass the American Jobs Act, but he believes we cannot wait, so he will act where they won’t.”

-- White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer talking to the New York Times.

For eight weeks, it was “Pass this bill.” Starting today in Las Vegas, the president will shift to “We can’t wait,” as he announces various unilateral actions that he will take in a bid to revive the failing economy.

With bipartisan opposition to much of the president’s September proposals for a $47 billion stimulus package and $2 trillion tax increase on top earners, the president is hoping that he can now show that he has no choice but to act alone.

As he has done on offering amnesty to preferred categories of illegal immigrants and has repeatedly attempted to do on global warming, the president is looking to work around legislative opposition to his plans by using executive action.

I finally see that glimmer of a spark I was hoping for.... will it last?

Any increased economic intervention by Obama directly will ensure the soon coming economic disaster shall be greatly compounded.

Lockit -> RE: Obama showing his backbone, finally? (10/24/2011 12:20:44 PM)

I don't see him stepping up and having a spine. I see him as gathering votes. At minimum.

I don't fall into party lines. So this isn't an opinion based on a party. It is just my view of what he is doing, when he is doing it and how he is doing it. And for those that would... I am not arguing my opinion. [:D]

Tazzy, where's the money going to come from?
Is he proposing to take our money then give it back to us through jobs?
Instead of 12 TSA officers at the airport will we then see 50?
And what kind of jobs? Will he get us out of those "free-trade" deals and bring manufacturing jobs back to this country?

Lucylastic -> RE: Obama showing his backbone, finally? (10/24/2011 12:33:53 PM)

Its about time he started kicking ass

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama showing his backbone, finally? (10/24/2011 1:01:17 PM)

Well sheesh Pops.....didn't you get the memo, this President is going to empty out his own personal bank account to supply those jobs.Aint that swell of him ?

This might just be me doubling down on my bet....but I place the blame for his reticence to act unilaterally on an underestimation of Republican intransigence .
I am at a loss in explaining why he underestimated that impulse to obstruct that they have been exhibiting....they practically bought add time announcing that they would not work with him...so he should have been aware of their plans.
Couple that with the fear of Democratic legislatures of getting too far out in front of public sentiment and you have 2 years of unmet expectations

How about we get it from the people who put us in this mess?

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama showing his backbone, finally? (10/24/2011 2:42:54 PM)

Nope, not gonna argue with you, Lockit.

of course it has a lot to do with votes. everything in washington that is done has to do with votes.

Without money, there are no jobs.

Without jobs, there is no money.

Forgive me, I was remiss in giving the link in the OP.

Sounds like housing and student loans are first on his EO list. Not sure where you see TSA jobs at, pops.

CNBC is more current: http://www.cnbc.com/id/45021347?__source=google%7Ceditorspicks%7C&par=google

"We can't wait to help homeowners," it goes.

That action consists of revamping an existing government refinance program through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for borrowers who owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth, so-called "underwater" borrowers. There are an estimated 11 million of those nationwide according to CoreLogic.

The original program, which started in 2009 and has helped about 900,000 borrowers get lower interest rates, was capped. You couldn't owe more than 25 percent more than your home was worth.

That cap is now gone, so you can be eligible no matter how underwater you are. Fees have been waived or lowered, banks have been largely let off the hook for reps and warrants on the loans (when they are forced to buy back bad loans), second liens can be transferred and mortgage insurers will move their coverage to the new loan.

While federal regulators and administration officials were releasing, explaining and selling the plan in Washington this morning, President Obama is making his pitch in a state where 60 percent of homeowners with a mortgage are underwater on those mortgages.

And every time a President uses one for a domestic issue he runs the risk of being accused of ruling by decree....something no President can long withstand.

Ahhh, but this President ran to be the first post-partisan President,I'm not saying I agree with his attempt to gather partisan support for his policies....as a matter of fact I do think I indicated in my first post that he made a miscalculation in doing so.
When I was freezing my ass off on the mall(actually wasn't that cold...lol) I expected Jim to correct the excesses of the past eight years....not spend nearly three years trying to build a consensus that was always going to elude him.
