Status: offline 		I will fully admit that this isn't a huge deal and I know everyone will tell me that if it bothers me to just move on to the next. I'm also sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't find it in the search.

I'm simply curious if it bothers others if the subs/slaves sending you messages make tons of typos or can't spell well?

I guess it would depend. I'm sure to some the intelligence of their sub/slave wouldn't matter as long as they do as they are told but personally I want my slave to have decent intelligence. Some typos are one thing but when it's constant and they obviously aren't paying attention to what they are writing it bothers me or when they misspell words that, if they paid attention to my messages or profile, they'd know how to spell them ( for example: Martial Arts is in my profile and I mentioned it in a message but when he wrote back it was "Marshal Arts"). I can't help but cringe.

However, it bugs the hell out of me. During instant messages or quick emails between face to face friends or text messages, I don't pay much attention to spelling. An email, however, is someone's first impression. If someone can't take the time to see that things are spelled correctly, it makes a bad first impression.

I will admit, though, that as I've gotten older, I've gotten lazier and more forgetful. So sometimes when the spelling of the word I want to use just seems to allude me, rather than look it up, I will often just use a different term, lol.

Status: offline 		I will say that as a sub/slave it is a pet peeve of mine as well.

Before I met Master I would think "you pay so little attention to detail so how can I entrust my safety to you?" when it was blatant and consistent. For Pete's sake, so many browsers have spell check built into them. It doesn't take that much additional effort.

Sorry! I swear I couldn't find it lol but thanks for answering!

I agree, with quick emails and instant messages it isn't as bad but if they have the time to sit and reply to something, I'd think they would take the extra time to be sure it's in good form. I'm almost positive this person really thinks he's spelling things correctly though which makes me question his intelligence.

I also agree that if it takes too much effort into spell checking or they are in such a rush to reply that they'd probably be the same in a relationship...of course they might not be but it's not something I want to find out later and be disappointed because I didn't follow my initial "red flag".

Status: offline 		No, I actually kind of like it. It gives me a chance to indulge my tendency towards bitchiness. When I get one of those messages I happily reply by asking them to kindly write me in either English or French, as I don't speak whatever language they are writing in.

People say that things like "text speak" are a sign of our advancing technology. Bullshit! I can't even text speak when texting, lol. To me, someone who types an email or on the message boards in text speak is showing they are lazy, immature and most likely lack proper grammar skills.

I remember talking to an attorney about a year ago and her saying how she has gotten so used to text messaging on her phone, she went to type a letter and was using text speak. WTF?! She seems surprised (and miffed) when I told her that I never make that mistake.

Sadly, the youth of today is so rarely taught proper spelling and grammar after elementary school. Teachers have taken the attitude that since computers will check all of it anyway, it isn't needed. Of course, when my son was in school, I got letters from his teachers that included quite a few errors. I always felt like taking a red pencil to them and sending them back with the question, "how are you actually qualified to teach my child?"

I have been called on this one on many different forums but I do have my reasoning. One being that I personally often type like a monkey on crack. I am however aware that I am a very intelligent person.(start with mensa at 17 and work your way up to the last idiot that pissed me off if you want examples of how I know) Anyone can make mistakes, even me, even you. I would like to give at least as much credit to anyone else...sub or not. There is also the fact that the person sending the msg may not be a native to english. Or perhaps they are young and have been drawn into the whole text speak thing. I also have to admit that I like the idea of someone pointing out the they don't know what they are talking about when they try to spell somethings and I have a reason for that too. You example "martial arts" most folks that have really been trained in them know how to spell it correctly. So there is pretty good chance someone is pointing out that they are lieing to you. And who doesn't love a liar that points themself out.

I get so upset at this too! All too often, I'll get an email from my child's teacher or even a school administrator and there will be spelling or grammar errors. I mean seriously??

Just pointing out the irony of this post - "WTF" is considered "text speak" ... also known as "netspeak"

I will say this:  I grew up in a house where my mother was an elementary teacher with a librarian certification.  She basically turned me into a card carrying member of the spelling/grammar police.  Yes, I make mistakes too, but I try to avoid them, and I expect others to as well.

Status: offline 		well,.. yeah, major cringe when I see words like when "women" is used when it should be "woman", and spell check doesnt make corrections like that. I know my spelling has gotten bad since computers/internet but I do try to spell most words correctly and use proper grammer..

I notice that forums that are populated mostly by Americans do have significantly poorer spelling and grammer. I never noticed that occuring on primarily Canadian forums. It really did bug me a lot when I first moved to the US. I dont know, is it due to different educational systems? I grew up in a hick town of 500 in Alberta and thought my education was lacking (due to hick towns not getting the best teachers).. little did I know! lol I had a very bad English teacher in grade 7 so spelling & grammer is a sensitive subject for me, meaning I feel a gap in what I should have learned but didnt.

But on the forums or in a personal email or chat, i will use signature words if you want to call them that.. cuz instead of because,.. tho instead of though.. just cuz I can!!! No one has ever complained to me about it tho..

It was nice at the recent Sens game that they flashed historical Jets' game highlights on the big screens, ending with, "Welcome back!"
[noting the possessive plural apostropher ;-)]

Yes, I've noticed my spelling is worse with a computer since I find I make homonym errors, and I can't stand spellcheck since it has an inferior vocabulary.
And yes, spelling errors do bother me; as above, it can demonstrate a lack of attention to detail, but I also recognise some people don't have the skill and can't acquire it overnight.
But Oxford commas and subjunctive moods turn me on!

When writing an email to someone, I don't care if you type like a monkey on crack, have an IQ of 250 and are a card carrying member of MENSA, you are making a first impression and should take the time to at least try to do it correctly. Would you use that as an excuse on a resume? Of course not. You only have one chance to make a first impression, and multiple spelling errors (not just one or two minor ones) means you don't care about the impression you are making.

By the way, her Martial Arts example was simply that he was mentioning something in her profile, she said nothing about him saying he had studied it. But in his favor, it did show he read her profile.

Good point. I've been trying to cuss less in print. So "WTF" is better than the correct, "What the FUCK?"

It was eye-opening. What I learned from the 12 or 13 pages it continued: poor ability to read and/or write well isn't always due to lack of intelligence. A few brave people weighed in about disabilities, and literacy challenges caused by deteriorating standards for public education. We heard from the valiant ESL folks who must constantly struggle with a particularly difficult and often nonsensical language. It was mentioned that what they so painstakingly learned about English simply gets clobbered by native speakers in written mediums like message boards, so what was the use?

Interestingly, the inevitable poopies who told me in no uncertain terms to get over it...did so with complete spelling and grammatical perfection. What also came to light for me personally...I've been on this planet over half a century. Whether I like it or not, the English language and technology's influence over it are changing. To me, that's a little bit sobering.

Status: offline 		*grin* I did send their correspondence back with red circles correcting spelling and grammar errors.

My sons were told to hand in assignments printed from the computer but before they were allowed to do so, they had to write and proof by hand. Today, they are in the minority with proper spelling and grammar. When we text or email, the words are spelled out rather than shortened to textspeak. In our household, I was the spelling Domme. ;)

Status: offline 		At the juvenile prison where I worked (and at the adult prison where I work now) I've been known to correct the spelling and grammar on the health care request forms before sending the reply back.  Some of them actually do appreciate it.  Most of them hope that I'm not the one who responds to them LOL

ETA:

I have mild dyslexia - and I have learned to compensate for it for the most part and expect that others will at least try to do the same.  If I get too tired, my typing starts to look like gibberish to everyone else, even if it looks fine to me.  My handwriting is even worse.  I proofread, I use spell check to catch the worst problems, and rely on other people to be understanding on the (very) few that make it through.  I also only use a few 'net speak' things because it's very difficult for me to understand them if everything is shortened and abbreviated.  Most of what I read has to be 'standard' English or it gives me a headache trying to figure out what the person means.

I take it this is another place where I needed to put...."This is just my opinion. You asked a question. I answered. Your opinion may vary" I mean really I posted my thoughts. I do not ask, or expect, you to agree with them. But don't jump me. You being aggressive will not change my opinion on the topic. It will only limit my opinion of you...which I would rather did not happen.

*oh* and yes I understand about her example but someone sent me a comment that was much like it. I should have made that more clear. Thank you for pointing that out.
