I will volunteer to throw in a new topic in hopes of starting some marginally more worthwhile discussion. 

Here's a subject I've been tossing around with some folks recently: Obedience training - what does it mean to you, and do you regard it as a synonym for humiliation?

Status: offline 		Canine training comes to mind immediately... collar and leash, verbal commands, swats with a crop to direct and indicate failure. But that's the specifically fetish version. Obedience training, in a general sense, would mean some activity under the direction of a dominant who would provide feedback, punishment or reward. In addition to the leathery things that come to mind, various domestic service or other chores could fulfill the purpose if orders are given and the submissive's performance is evaluated. It could be any activity that requires some protocol or specific way of doing things that can be critiqued and corrected. The purpose--other than fun--is to condition the subject to obey. Even if the dominant considers it a chore or catering to a sub's kink, they should consider it an investment that will pay off later as their sub performs well, having more experience with obedience.

Humiliation can serve the same purpose of conditioning a sub to embrace their role and perform well but it is not the same as obedience training. Humility is a condition a sub accepts, obedience is something the sub has to perform. Both humiliation and training contribute to the same purpose of getting the sub's mind right, but they require different reactions and behavior from the sub.

Status: offline 		Obedience training could be a lot of different things. It depends on what the person is being trained to do/be. No I do not think of it as synonymous with humiliation.

Love it! That kind of obedience training is perhaps my favorite kind, though I prefer to think of it more as "canine-style." The difference is that we don't need to be literally pretending he's a dog - just treating him like one.

Also well said. It is true that desiring to obey, as a submissive does, doesn't necessarily translate to being good at obedience.

To me, obedience training is just that.....training the sub/slave to be obedient and do things the way you want him/her to do them, and to not do things you don't want him/her to do. IMO it's not synonymous with humiliation. I'm not into humiliation but I am into subs being obedient.

Status: offline 		I would think obedience training would mean instilling an obedient attitude in a submissive, as opposed to training him or her to acquire specific skills or perform specific acts. If my girlfriend got into one of her dominant moods and decreed that I was in for some obedience training, I would probably assume that I was going to receive a series of increasingly unwelcome commands, and sharply punished for any questioning or hesitation. The point would be to teach me to snap to it and do as I was told, even when I really, really didn't want to. Some of the commands might involve humiliating actions, but otherwise I wouldn't expect a particular focus on humiliation. But of course, I would just be guessing.

Even my 66 yr old mother reckons I need a 'dominant woman' & boy was she a hardass!
She's still working a 55 hr week & won't take shit from anyone but has given up on me.

I fink she is ace.

I expect someone serving me to be obedient, because, to use the words of Hannah, THAT'S THEIR FUCKING JOB. Obedience comes part and parcel with service, and with submission. If a person is not inclined to please me by following directions, then they are just not going to be a good match for me. There are behaviors that a dominant can enhance, but no one can create that desire to please. If it's not there, it's not, and it can't be imposed from withouit by "training".
