You're wrong in some ways there......... I am and can be a squat queen. I build muscle like a man...but squatting fucks with bursitis in the hips.  So does Kettle bells ( (I love kettle bells too). SO. if you have a cure or tip for making squats work with that I'm am all ears.  It's been a real trial for a year , so please do help if you have expertise or knowledge.

I'm about to rejoin my bodypump class, despite the bursitis , I know it involves lots of squats but my trainer knows that I'll only stop when I know I'll be fucking myself for next time.

I can make upper body mass........bi's, tri's lat's and back. I build muscle in quite a male way.

Well, a stairmaster will tone an arse!.....it won't be the best thing to BUILD one.

Bursitis can be treated, how am I wrong? Bodypump is lame as fuck, the way they teach squatting is terrible. Women's fitness in general is plagued by terrible information and instruction because for some reason people think women aren't supposed to train the same way as men. Fix your bursitis and then start squatting in a powerlifting style for maximum glute development and injury prevention.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Body stuff, NOT just weight! The whole nine yards. (10/30/2011 3:04:34 PM)

oh yeah -- it's a shimmy, in bellydance when the hips/butt area move really fast -- but it's all driven by your glutes. it's part of the suhaila salimpour method and makes it easier to layer a shimmy over another move.

you basically sit on the floor, and spread your legs out as wide as they can, lean forward a little bit to isolate the glutes at the back of the body. and then try to squeeze each glute individually. for some people it comes really easily, and for others it takes a while for them to "feel" their glute muscles.

here's suhaila showing you how to do it haha

I thought surgery of this kind was quite astronomical.  Was that an expensive procedure ( as I think you couldn't get that on any health ticket ?)

Me personally I'll use surgery as my last resort lol. I'm not averse to such things heh and yeah I'm actually looking into a few nips and tucks in the near future. If you are able to have it available to you why not use it.

While I am not looking into it for the near future, I wouldn't rule it out for the future, I can't see anything wrong with the odd nip and tuck as long as it's not an excuse for being healthy (read, instead of working out going for liposuction - possibly not the best or healthiest idea). When it becomes sad is when somebody is pretending to be a teenager and they are clearly not, but looking the best for your age is something we should all strive for, it doesn't mean to have the bland Barbie face so often favoured by cosmetic surgeons.

I'm okay with my weight right now. I've lost 55 pounds so far this year, shooting for another 20-30, depends. However I would love to be longer in my torso too. It is aggravating being short waisted and having all my pants come up to my boobs or down to my knees. I adopted stockings over panty hose years ago because of having so much material bunched up around my waist. Guess we all have images of what we wish could be.

totally! i switched to them for that reason (plus they're more convenient anyway)
i really actually liked the low-rise trend with jeans because they fit me like normal, and the ULTRA low-rise ones, sat low on my hips like i wanted. =p
the only problem then, was that the butt curvature caused gapping, but still -- i'd rather have that, then have the waist of a pair of jeans all the way up under my eyes. =p

My insurance paid for it because they were waay too large for my frame, made me bend forward causing neck and back aches and headaches and a permanent indentation in my shoulders from my bra straps.

I don't think I was ever as happy as the day I was told I could get the surgery.

Total cost to insurance was about $10,000 and I was under the knife for about 4 hours due to the massive amount that was removed.

If bursitis can be treated beyond Diclofenac, then I would be sincerely indebted to have ANY information as to HOW.  It's a curse for an active person and has been a serious blight for me.

You can if the boobs are causing back problems. I often considered breast reduction, less because of the back problems (building up your back muscles works a treat) but because I was fed up with guys talking to my chest, but figured as long as they're still perky, why the fuck would I want to mutilate myself because some hormone driven idiots can't focus on my eyes? When they start to sag, maybe a lift and a bit of a reduction, but I guess by then other things might be more important.

Nothing wrong with the odd nip and tuck if somebody desires it as long as they don't go overboard and erase all traces of being an individual, I'm currently fascinated by botox but deadly afraid of needles and ending up with a frozen face...

A face lift, fillers, botox and stuff, is totally not to do with health. We will not be less healthy without having implants, or less wrinkly eyes, or dying hair.

Another aspect then? The mental one?

If you could afford £10,000, would you fix somthing on your body.., your face or your teeth?

What matters to you the most?

I don't know the details on bursitis but I've known of people getting it treated but it depends on whether or not it is infected.

There's only 2 real ways to squat, low bar (powerlifting) and high bar (or olympic). Any other way is just wrong. They are both fine but just have mechanical differences and hit different muscles. I train low bar squat especially for women because of the posterior activation and the fact that high bar is technically much more difficult.

The squats I've seen in bodypump are like sissy squats. There is no depth which means you don't hit any of the muscles fully and yet you put more stress on the knees than if you went deeper. Also the women are not taught how to grip the bar to keep upper back rigidity so they end up with some thoracic flexion on the eccentric part of the lift. So they end up not getting the benefits but with more injury risk.

Anyone can squat like a powerlifter, it doesn't mean wearing strapping and doing 600lbs, it means taking a wider stance (to hit the glutes, hips and adductors more), keeping the bar just above the rear delts (not on top of the shoulders), elbows right back in the air and squatting to parallel, no higher. The girl in the first pic I posted is doing low bar. The last girl has dodgy form to be honest.

To be honest, I spent more than that on my teeth as I wasn't happy with an overbite, it made me more happy so i consider the money wasn't wasted. As for my face, I've been debating with myself for years to get a scar removed, most people claim they can't see it unless I point it out but I know it's there. I would say the mental aspect and the health aspect are closely related, if something makes you deeply unhappy it will affect your general health.

For me it's always been about my own look. Little hips and BIG boobs..... nothing fits nicely, not the way I'd like. I've never minded guys noticing my boobs because well, I HAVE boobs and they're quite nice....but with tiny hips I will always look top heavy.

Yes, I'd love to have the little boobs I dreamed of when they first  started emerging..... Nature doesn't listen when you beg * stop growing, pleaseeeeeeeeee* night after night under your blankets.....lol

So, I have little dickie fits about my tummy after 5 pregnancies....and my boobs because they make me top heavy.

When it comes to the nips and tucks, I've spent serious money on my teeth.........something few people notice, frankly.( not american white teeth!) I could have had an apronectomy for less. I can get a decentish tum with working out, I can't sort out my teeth.

The botox gals ........ give the rest of us a low down? Positives/negatives .....where, how , etc etc.

LadyConstanze -> RE: Body stuff, NOT just weight! The whole nine yards. (10/30/2011 3:57:37 PM)

As I said, I spent a fortune on my teeth, but then I'm European and not British, I don't go for the super white and super fake smile, but I wanted them straight, nice and natural looking, important for me...

As for the boobie issue, I do understand, I'm a UK size 6 to 8 but I got 34F boobs, while I have a bum (inline skating, ice scating, etc) the rest of my frame just is too slight for my boobs. It really did bug me a lot when I was a teenager, the older I get the less it bugs me, somebody staring too obviously, I just tend to point at my eyes and say "Speak this way, please", kinda odd that I can sort of accept them as "This is the way I am" when I couldn't live with a slight overbite and slightly irregular teeth, but teeth were always quite important to me and nothing that turns me off as much as neglected teeth, can't tell you why but somebody having the dental equivalent of a graveyard in their mouth, it just grosses me out.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Body stuff, NOT just weight! The whole nine yards. (10/30/2011 3:58:23 PM)

I had deep frown lines and crows feet. The Botox made them disappear. I guess I don't consider it very serious, since it is so commonplace. A good price is 10 bucks a unit, for those areas it takes 40 units. I hate spending the money, I love the results.

Since we are talking about things other than weight, I also have had great results with Botox. I want to try rejuvaderm but I am still researching it.

Crumbs, I wasn't expecting all the serious stuff like botox.  So what did the botox do, and what were the *great results* and even though I'm in the UK, where costs just do not compare.....for the US folk, what was the cost-ish?

I have a similar problem but at the other end. Except for when I was scary over weight, my hips have always been wider than my waist so finding pants that fit is really difficult unless I want to wear something with an elastic waist. It's somewhat easier with jeans and such being lower in the waist but still difficult and frustrating at times.

Ok, but this is how I lift in Bodypump. (not since the old bursitis) Narrow squats work better and means I can keep going, or isolation stuff on machines.

We have to do wide and narrow squats..... same technique you described. I miss out the wide ones, for obvious reasons, but before that it was hugely effective.

All the teaching is about NOT stressing your knees. I'm just wondering if you saw a rather shoddy class?

Bursitis is inflammation of the sac of fluid in your hip joints. I'm after that elusive cure..... treating the symptoms really makes little sense to me after a year or so. I can cycle for miles and miles but can be crippled after walking a few paces. What a joke.

ETA: Just for your info john, nothing is *infected*, bursitis is just *inflamed*.

Thanks Lily, that looks fun.  A bit like the odd yoga class I've been to, actually.

Classes have always appealed to me far more than the gym itself as you simply have to get down with it once the door shuts behind you.

Septic Bursitis. You're welcome.

Squatting narrow puts more emphasis on the quads, which isn't a terrible thing except it's kinda missing the point of doing squats. Leg presses would achieve the same thing with less risk.

The thing about knees is that all these shitty instructors believe that squatting deep hurts the knees because it's been a myth for years. The fact of the matter is that stopping above parallel puts the greatest sheering force on the knees when they are in the weakest position. So like I said, it doesn't achieve much and is a greater injury risk. Whenever I watch these group classes doing squats, they always do them like that and it makes me cringe.
