lol.. as expensive as WF's is, you are gonna need the free samples.

In general, you are right. But between the bulk foods section, 365 brand, and sales, Whole Foods isn't that bad. Just stay away from the little gourmet / prepackaged/ foo foo foods.

the 365 brand at Whole Foods is pretty awesome. nice to have an option that's affordable but with those same quality standards.

The UPC code thing is not quite accurate. The producer can label a GMO food as 8xxxx but nothing forces them to do so and most, virtually all, do not. http://www.innvista.com/health/foods/organics/labeling.htm

Ya, they stopped when they realized it was an anti-selling point:

GE Labeling
In 1992, the FDA declared that biotech foods were the same as conventional foods – because the biotech companies said so. The number 8 was then instituted since the produce industry thought consumers would prefer genetically modified food moreso than conventionally grown food. It did not take long for them to find out differently. Although the number 8 designation can still be found, it is rare. The biotech industry is also fighting any sort of labeling for their inventions – now that they know consumers really do not want them. As it stands now, Hawaiian papaya is about the only food you will find that has the number 8 in front of it.

Unless the label specifically states “certified organic”, it is a safe bet that any food containing corn, soy, and cottonseed oils has a GE origin. These processed foods will not have the genetically engineered PLU code that would alert the consumer. In addition, manufacturers of GE products are not subjected to any special review, approval, or labeling. The organic producer is, however. Ironic, isn’t it – something that is grown naturally requires more scrutiny than does something containing any number of harmful substances?

One of the big objections to GMO food was that the pollen would obviously not just stay confined to GMO crops, contaminating organic crops also.

We apparently no longer have the right to choose

And then after contaminating conventional farmers crops, they shall sue said conventional farmers!

http://cliffordmillerlaw.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/monsanto-sued-gmo-patented-crops-by-organic-groups-farmers/

quote:

In the past, Monsanto has successfully sued farmers in both the US and Canada for allegedly violating patent protections. But the truth is that Monsanto’s seeds or other genetic materials have inadvertently trespassed on nearby crop fields, for which any rational person can see makes Monsanto the violator. But Monsanto has someone been able to twist this before the courts to claim that the owners of the contaminated fields were guilty of patent infringement — and shockingly, Monsanto has actually won numerous cases on this illegitimate platform

hi

i don't know where you're getting that kind of info from, but if it's true then it is a GIGANTIC secret. if it was true the gmo manufacturers would have said it to anyone who would listen. there is a movement in california now to get a proposition on the ballot to mandate labeling gmo's.

Next year after the weather improves I am building my geodesic greenhouse! Hurrah.

This year we had a bounty of FoodStuffs on just a tiny plot of land.... so many tomatoes and green peppers.

a court in Minnesota recently ruled that an organic farmer could sue conventional and GMO farmers for damages caused by pesticide drift.

It has not been any GIGANTIC secret, I have known and been opposed to gmo food since it first came out, so 15 friggin years ago. Where have you been??? Why is it i keep thinking about that Geico ad where the guy has been living under a rock...

So there's a "movement" in CA, fyi, gmos have been banned (for the most part) in Europe all this time..

Whole foods pretty much just caved to Monsanto though. They claimed it was due to GMO's being impossible to keep out, and they are trying to "co-exist".
