The numbers in Oakland will only continue to grow. Injuring that vet ratcheted this one up to a whole new level; the fuzz will get a lot of over-time because of it. This could be problematic because Oakland is one of those cities that has the potential to get violent. Unless something takes a turn for the worse in New York--where the protestors have been (mostly) cooperative given the circumstances--then Oakland will take center stage.

Dude I remember the night in the chat at nycga.cc when my buddy Lucas in San Fran typed in "The first tent is down in Ogawa, we now have an Occupy Oakland" I typed fast maybe 7 or 8 seconds.... and I was like the 20th guy to type "Oh Fuck", "Fuck", "Oh My Fucking God", or "Now We're Fucked" ... I actually forget which I typed. You mostly likely never saw an Oakland Dead show, unless you had a REALLY FUCKING NAUGHTY baby sitter (and god love ya if you did).... But the Oakland cops live for crashing into big crowds. Fucking baseball games in that town are dangerous.

Oh it will get violent when the police tell them to disperse and the protestors refuse which is disobeying authority. Then the police have every right to take action because the protestor are refusing to obey authority which in itself is a violent action. Because this America and thats how freedom works.

Not all went well...

OAKLAND -- Occupy Oakland demonstrators turned their ire on big banks, corporations and the Port of Oakland Wednesday by marching, blocking traffic and chanting -- and in some cases, defacing ATMs and breaking windows -- at Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Chase Bank branches around downtown.

However, they did police themselves as a group....

At Whole Foods at 27th and Bay streets, a splinter group wearing all-black and face masks threw paintballs, tore up a fence and broke a window before the larger crowd turned on them and forced them to stop. There were about 75 people inside the store at the time.

With those exceptions, it was a loud, boisterous and largely peaceful demonstration as thousands of people from all walks of life poured into downtown Oakland from points east, north, south and west. They were there to lend their support and their voices to the general strike, the first of its kind in Oakland since 1946.

City and port workers were sent home early as the crowd of demonstrators swelled to about 5,000 strong with more expected as the work day ended and the demonstration prepared to march on the Port of Oakland.

Police kept a low profile as the demonstrators took over downtown streets and committed sporadic vandalism. For much of the afternoon the large crowd split off into separate marches, with some staying at the Occupy Oakland camp at 14th and Broadway and participating in teach-ins and sit-ins, and others marching and protesting at various banks located near the

...........

Quan said that 200 of the city's civilian workforce of 2,500 workers had taken advantage of floating holidays or furloughs to call in sick today, and she asked the demonstrators respect the rights of area employees who may support the movement but were unable to take time off.

So 8% of city workers were errrm off.

I hope those who commited vandalism end up atoning for that in some way or another. That's not what its about.

ETA looks like a helluva lot more than 0.03%.

I hope names were taken and they have to pay restitution.

Other than that, it looks like a pretty good turn out.

5:41 p.m. Protesters have taken over port
Protesters have taken over the Port of Oakland. They are blocking entrances, climbing on top of containers and even railroad crossings.

The Oakland general strike called by Occupy Oakland has drawn thousands Wednesday for rallies and marches. The show of solidarity is expected to continue throughout the day and many businesses have shut down.

5:45 p.m.: Oakland calls for mutual aid
Oakland is now calling for extra officers from other jurisdictions for help dealing with the Occupy general strike, signaling possible concern from officials about what direction the protest will take tonight.
San Mateo Sheriff's Lt. Ray Lunny confirmed that Alameda County has called for mutual aid from San Mateo County.
Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said Tuesday the city would deal with the strike with its
own officers, though he has said mutual was available if needed. San Mateo County officers were instructed to bring gas masks and riot gear.

Yep. Just wait. From what I understand the NYC movement is dying down (or the media outlets are doing an excellent job playing down the events). Add the fact that the chilly weather is creeping up, the police are cracking down, and you have the 'poster-city' movement loosing steam.

Enter Oakland. Big time news with the vet as stated before which only catalyzes the fire. No chilly weather to damper the movement (fuck you Californians; 60 degrees is not cold!). Add: a rough and tough city that has a demographic that sympathizes with the movement, a guilt ridden police chief that clearly does feel bad for the vet and is in no position to crack down on the occupiers, and an inexperienced mayor that shows no signs of crashing the protestors' party - you have a pretty good recipe for this to get taken to the next level. The police have already used tear gas, mace, and other 'non-lethal' forms of weaponry. Next come the rubber bullets, and what happens after a city police department seriously injures their own citizens is anyones guess.

There will be a murder somewhere--probably in Oakland--as a result of this (the motivation and the victim is anyones guess). If you think there has been a lot of excitement up to this point, then you better buckle your seat belt.

How is shutting down a port going to help their cause ? Do the protesters think about their fellow union brothers that are now unable to go to work ?

I hope you're wrong.

I think you hope that as well. Unfortunately, others don't.

Wanna bet they'll get paid any way? Not saying I agree, just saying what is.
