an interesting thing in regards to this. i popped over to a hair forum i visit from time to time, mostly populated with black people. there was also a thread there concerning this video and most of them were coming to the defense of the dad (!!) and saying that the girl had been the worst offender by taping it. =p i sometimes wonder why i can't relate to other black people, but i have to say, reading that thread made me happy i don't. black people in generally usually have a different opinion of corporal punishment, and usually excuse more severe cases, and tend to think of it as "the only way" -- they're more likely to quote the bible, particularly "spare the rod." many of them were also then saying "what she got was nothing compared to what i did" -- and maybe that's coming out of not wanting to think of their own parents as abusers? someone told me once that they considered using things like hangers and extension cords abuse, and thing like that were used on me when i was a kid. anyway, that was an interesting cross-cultural experience... i was pretty horrified by most of the responses i read on the other forum. preeettty horrified. I've read about this on other forums too and while the races of the posters is not usually noted, if we presume a cross section of America, then there are plenty of white people with a "spare the rod" mentality. It sickens me too, the large number of people who are defending the father and making jokes about the woodshed. I cannot understand how they see a man who has clearly lost his temper and is swinging a belt around in a rage is anything other than an abuser. I am not one hundred percent against corporal punishment but if a person cannot exhibit self discipline then they have no business disciplining another.
