I think that even the most, seemingly kind old man, in that position, has a massive ego. I think that people like that, years of adulation and power, changes a person. Almost all will grow an over inflated sense of their own lack of limitations and warped sense of their own fallibility. I do not believe that Joe Paterno is any more saintly than anyone else in a similar position. So yeah, I see only arrogance in his attempt to retire.
