i have to say i agree with tazzy -- when someone with that kind of reputation, power, and respect just sits around and does nothing, that's pretty horrible. it would've taken no effort at all for him to do what needed to be done, and yet he didn't.
none of these people did.

the lowliness of it is just so mindboggling.

Status: offline 		Saw a link saying that it may cost the school 100 million before its all over with... just to the victims... not including legal fees.

At this time, they are indicating 20 victims.... could be more to come.

My only consolation is that these guys have only the bleakest of futures. Terrible as it is for me to say, I hope everyone guilty, everyone that was aware of what was going on and did nothing to stop it, feel so badly they off themself due to overpowering guilt. The meanest part of me would dearly love to get medieval on their asses.

He admitted in his statement he wishes he had done more. For some reason a Grand Jury wasn't impaneled until 2010. Eight years late, heh? I also understand from late news that McQueary will not be on the sidelines but out of view (and reach) of the crowd up in the coaches' box. Do you think Paterno was more than arrogant in making the announcement that he would retire at the end of the year or was he just trying to preempt the Board of Trustees?

Status: offline 		I think that even the most, seemingly kind old man, in that position, has a massive ego. I think that people like that, years of adulation and power, changes a person. Almost all will grow an over inflated sense of their own lack of limitations and warped sense of their own fallibility. I do not believe that Joe Paterno is any more saintly than anyone else in a similar position.

So yeah, I see only arrogance in his attempt to retire.

Status: offline 		I heard some tried to pressure Paterno to leave in 2004 and he refused. Too big to be pushed out.
And btw, someone mentioned in this thread that he should get a pass b/c he is so old now. But he was 13 years younger back in '98 when the first incident occurred.
Also interesting that Sandusky started his charity program to help kids back in 1977. Makes you wonder how many kids he "helped."

I don't think Paterno understands the scope of what was and is happening regarding this case. While he wishes he had a do over now he probably still thinks that he was not in the wrong even if he would have done it differently in hindsight.

Status: offline 		The whole hysteria around sports is very hard for me to relate to, I actively hate team sports like football, etc. I can't even stand to be in the same room when a game is on TV. A large part of why my marriage failed was because he was a sports fiend and it drove me crazy. I would't go to a football or baseball game at gun point. Did I mention I hate sports?
So, I especially can't relate to this passionate defense of a college coach whose department was so criminal that children were being molested. The college had to fire him, they are going to get their asses sued. They have to look like they are doing something. A jury is not going to be sympathetic if they don't fire the guy.
But, what do i know, I hate sports.

I think the board is seeing that they should have acted as promptly dealing with McQueary and they did with Paterno. McQueary is going to be gone. The university will sack him or he'll just resign. There is no way he can stay in that program and be productive. He's probably done as a coach but I thought the same thing about Michael Vick as a quarterback. McQueary may carry on in coaching but it won't be at State College.

It's been my experience that men don't wake up one day and become sports junkies. Perhaps you missed a few red flags.

to speak what they think and give an opinion! 

You can stand by this man whom let maybe 100's
of children be abuse so badly when the grand jury read
the indictments so many were sick and ill just from
hearing the 25 page report!  Now mind you they also
sold the children to rich trustees! 

it is your opinion but wow!
