Part of sway back is poor posture, but also it's from not having muscle strength to support yourself and then your back sags apparently and tilts in and "rides" on joints.

You need to build up your core.  I don't know if corsets will help, but exercise certainly will.

Corsetting would keep your posture correct at least. I assume.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Would corsetting Along with pt and exercise help with sway back? (11/14/2011 9:14:21 AM)

Maybe, but it wouldn't do anything to address the underlying problem, which is weakness in the core.

That's what the pt is for.

NO, don't even think about it.
Do not use a corset for medical condition, unless prescribed by a doctor to do so.
If I may be frank and to the point. Your problem is your weight.

corset won't do anything for your muscles. Exercise and weight loss under a doctor's plan. You really should be talking to your doctor about this since this sounds like something you may need specialized care for.

SHe's enrolled me in a back care class, which I took before and it was a complete waste of 2 hours, but I'll still go and then pt.

Of course it is. But so is poor posture, part of sway back is poor posture.and if corsets can help poor posture I see no reason other than i hate them not to.

People who corset long-term (tightlacing) actually lose back muscle, so I would not recommend it for what you are asking. Seriously talk to your doctor, she/he will tell you the same thing.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Would corsetting Along with pt and exercise help with sway back? (11/14/2011 10:22:58 AM)

Blushes, cause you rely on the corset to hold you up and stop holding yourself up, I assume? I asked her if there were any back braces I could use to help with posture until I get some core strength again, and she said no because back braces unless they're the ridged hard plastic that trauma patients are put into allow you to bend and move and will not help your posture.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Would corsetting Along with pt and exercise help with sway back? (11/14/2011 10:35:38 AM)

Right; if the body doesn't have to do the job itself anymore, it won't. So a corset won't help you there.

You really should go talk to your doctor and physical therapist about this issue. If you were going to try to use a corset or brace of some kind to fix a back problem, it would have to be very specifically made for that purpose and would not be cheap.

As others have said, do exercises that focus on building up core strength, but talk with your physical therapist so you don't end up straining your back. Learn good form for any exercise you do.

A corset isn't the answer to your problem.
You could ask a doctor if could do yoga or
pilates both can benefit posture.
Talk to a doctor before you do anything on
your own

A corset will make your back feel great TEMPORARILY. It's not the same as a back brace, which is made for whatever your back condition is. A neighbor of mine wore this canvas contraption for years. If you need a brace, you should get a prescription for one, they are not made in the same way as a corset.

Swayback is a condition of your muscles and your bones, google "lordosis". Having that ass shelf is not the same thing at all.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Would corsetting Along with pt and exercise help with sway back? (11/14/2011 10:44:35 AM)

You are looking for a shortcut to the actual work.

A "real" corset is going to run you several hundred dollars. There are several different types, so no, all of them wouldn't help with your posture.

They will, as others have pointed out, make your muscles weaker as they will allow you to continue to not hold yourself up properly.

If the program was a "waste of 2 hours" last time, one of two things is going on. Your doctor has misdiagnosed your problem, or you didn't do everything they told you to do.

Honestly, your weight is a serious issue here. I'm not a skinny chick, and understand how hard losing weight can be, but there just isn't a short cut.

Regularly remind yourself to sit up straight. Have your partner and the others who see you daily also remind you when you are slouching.

Yep, it is going to be painful to sit/stand straight. Over time you will be able to do it longer before it becomes unbearable. Over time, you will, as with any other behavior modification, start to sit/stand straight without being reminded. Bonus is that just sit/standing straight/with proper posture, will be an exercise in itself, especially in the beginning.

The best thing for core strength EVER! Also those wonderful kettlebells.

Since I've been doing yoga, pilates and the kettlebell, my posture has improved majorly.

yoga yoga yoga ^_^ mmmhmmm ^_^

LaTigresse -> RE: Would corsetting Along with pt and exercise help with sway back? (11/14/2011 10:48:42 AM)

I just love yoga. I could say it's changed my life in many ways, and I wouldn't be overly dramatizing.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Would corsetting Along with pt and exercise help with sway back? (11/14/2011 10:49:06 AM)

Oh those kettlebells! Saw them on TV...IT LOOKED EXHAUSTING!!! And serious fun.

Thing is, our TFTB is a larger lady, so I don't know how well Pilates would work.
