xxblushesxx -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/16/2011 11:44:59 PM)

There's so much anger and bitterness in this thread, and I'm not entirely sure why. (although both sides have done some name calling and not been as respectful as they could be.) I'm just going to say for the record, one last time, that I have no problem with breast feeding almost anywhere, but a courtroom, where you have a formal appointment is just not the place. (in my own opinion)
I do understand the others' thoughts on it, and if it were anywhere else, I'd agree. I'd be arguing right alongside you, believe me.
And AS MUCH as it pains me, Termy is right that mothers *do* bring their children to court with them often because they think it will stop them from being arrested and/or mitigate whatever punishment the judge may hand out.
No one is going to agree, it seems, so unless something else comes up that is new and interesting...I'll catch ya'll on another thread.

Happy to oblige.

Euhm... no... you don't have that right.
That was established when it was officially made legal for a woman to breastfeed in public.

The fact it's legal makes it her right to do so.
And it also makes that if she CHOOSES not to subject you to it, she is doing you a favor.

Fine. Then I will exercise my *right* to stare at her chest and lick my lips the entire time she's doing it. Distract? Unsettling? Too bad. Don't look at me.

My only remark was that DarqueMirror does NOT have the right to not be subjected to a perfectly legal activity.

Smoking is "perfectly legal" and yet there are rules now where people can light up. Just as there were apparently rules in this judge's courtroom where the woman could and could not breastfeed.

Now that's an interesting use of the language, now isn't it? The unpleasant lawyer lady is now "both sides", such inventive folks you Yanks are, its quaint it is. Though it does make it a bit of a Mein Kampf when a fellow sets out to talk with one of them, what with words having meanings the complete opposite they do on this side of the pond.

Please show me where it says you have the RIGHT to not be subjected to (oh horror of horrors!) breastfeeding. Oh and who is forcing you to look instead of just turning your head?

LOL.... You could do a tap dance at the same time and it wouldn't have unsettled me in the least. People behave foolishly and are rude at times. I can cope with that and I excuse people that know no better. My husband would probably have invited you to take a closer look.

You can engage in contempt of the judge’s decision and/or the court systems in the United States or even express your perception of legally right or wrong but the judge is charged with a higher order, not just the letter of the law and court room theatrics planned to disrupt and deceive as obviously as they were in this case... will not be allowed in most court rooms in the United States.

What the fuck does that have to do with his (and others) contention that he has the RIGHT to not be "subjected" to breastfeeding in public?

Actually, it is a highly regulated practice these days concerning where it is allowed. Bad analogy.
There aren't 'rules' where people can light up. There are "laws'. The 2 are quite different.
Breast feeding, on the other hand, is protected by laws, not regulated. I agree that it was an inappropriate place to do it but I don't understand the baliff's reaction.

The comments by the Judge's boss are... interesting.

Arpig -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/17/2011 5:26:20 AM)

The judge's words from tazzy's article:
quote:

This is my court, my law and I do

Hopefully I am not the only one who finds this "inappropriate" in the extreme.

It is he judge’s court room; he or she establishes acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. Chaotic personal opinion has nothing at all to do with it; we live in an organized society. If you are unhappy with living in the United States elect the other options open to you, including picking up arms and standing opposed.

Arpig -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/17/2011 6:01:13 AM)

He said it was "MY law"

If that doesn't disturb you then I guess the steroids have started affecting your brain.

ETA:

I'm not, I don't live in the U.S. Clearly the question regarding the effect of the steroids has been resolved.

A court should afford you that if it offends you. The higher ground here is to provide a fair and impartial trial or hearing. As such no witness of any kind should be under duress.

If you boil all this bullshit down, it's the same reason you can't smoke in court.

T^T

Sorry, but the reasons that you cannot smoke in court is it is a) a fire hazard and b) a health hazard due to second hand smoke. It has absolutely nothing to do with offending people.

Breastfeeding is neither a fire nor a health hazard. It is feeding a hungry child the food that Nature created SPECIFICALLY for his needs. Since you seem to know shit all about it, if the child's cries cause a letdown effect and she DOESN'T nurse, then she has a wet shirt. Now which is far more distracting, a woman with two wet spots over her breasts and a crying child or a happy and quietly suckling child where you see almost no skin? I've seen women who AREN'T nursing show more breast tissue than most nursing mothers.

Arienos, I DO live in the US. The law is not the judge's plaything to do with and enforce as he pleases. He serves the public good, they do not serve him. It is not HIS law but THE law.

Arpig -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/17/2011 7:28:53 AM)

Well, technically it is the people's law, at least in theory.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/17/2011 7:45:04 AM)

LL is not a lawyer. She is a paralegal, at best.
