I think Mike did the right thing and handled the whole protest from the start in a classy, muture way.

The righties are declaring victory....lol....so clueless.

It ain`t over.

Mike is the 1% of course he brought in his gestapo tactics to try and close this down

Pathetic really, but what do you expect?

I think he reigned in the jerk cops(they are in every force).Could have been much worse. The biggest one thing tho that saved the OWS prostesters from the police was police empathy.

If it where Frank Rizzo, they`d have had the worste cops there everyday starting trouble, cracking heads, and "forget(ing) all the rules of this great country we live in". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg6evtgGcXM

Mike did his best,I think.

Jeezze,I shudder to think what rudy would have done.

I`m just saying it ain`t over,not by a long shot.[:D]

I`m also hearing some cons imagining they`re going to win next year b/c the president`s healthcare reforms are going to be struck down.As if the supremes are voting the 2012 election or something...[:D][:D][8|]

My guess is that a defeat will energize folks even more to vote democratic, not with the republicans.

His very own Kristallnacht. He should be proud.

Gutless. Middle of the night. All to save his gf a few dollars.

A nice showcase for the reason the movement started.

awww...sorry you feel that way.

I don`t think indefinite was sustainable tho.

They aren`t going anywhere. There will still be gatherings, just from home by bus or car.

Didn't realize that freedom of assembly was a 9 to 5 thing. Have to go home after....Mike is a hypocrite of the worst kind. He actually believes his own bullshit. 1000 police?  fuck

http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/15/us/new-york-occupy-eviction/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

So a court order was issued that allowed protesters back in with their tents but according to the article the mayor said that the park will remain closed until officials sort out the legal situation.

Does not a court order from a NY Supreme Court judge sort out the legal situation?  I think that indicates the mayor is in violation of a court order.  The mayor can appeal and wait for a decision but the order stands until that happens. Or am I missing something here?

Dave Degraw and the NLG appeared in court to demonstrate their RIGHT to assemble AT Liberty. The judge they are going in front of ordered that they be allowed to return to the park IMMEDIATELY.
However I just got a call from a buddy who's just reached Broadway and the Police are refusing to let the protesters in his group EVEN NEAR Liberty Plaza, despite they have a facially valid TRUE AND ATTEST COPY of the order in their possession.
In essence what this means is that NYPD have decided to DISREGARD THE JURISDICTION of the court from which flows most of their authority.
New York City is now lawless. Think about THAT when you decide to bring your kids to the statue of liberty, the empire state building, or ground zero.

If you care, please call 212-639-9675 and get the NAME of the person and tell them that ducking service is not only criminal contempt, but SHAMEFUL BEHAVIOR ON THE PART OF A PUBLIC OFFICIAL!!!

luckydawg -> RE: Origonal OWS camp closed down in Manhattan (11/15/2011 9:37:56 AM)

yep your missing something.

Having a judge on your speed dial, does not circumvent the process.

And she deals with real estate issues. Despite having been a leftwing ACLU activist for 25 years.

there is a process to ask for injunctive relief, and OWS did not follow it.

I think it is worth noting that The Mayor was allowing the OWS back into the park, before this "restraining order" was implemented. And so they got kicked out again, till the courts sort it out.

A process for which Judge Lucy Billings is ineligible.

It is easy to look up this stuff.

But reality isnt nearly as exciting is it?

That's brilliant... cept for the fact that the Land court HAS jurisdiction.
we've put restraining orders through our land court up here rather successfully.
   A legal scholar, you aren't.
But whatever... I'm not even close to interested in you half-wit diatribes today.

MB... You in Manhattan?
Been out and about today yet? What's the mood in general like?
Any effect on the general population's everyday dialogue?

joether -> RE: Origonal OWS camp closed down in Manhattan (11/15/2011 9:56:38 AM)

This is just utterly disgusting and unexcusable. The city does not take any actions to understand that there is a protest going on in their city, simply shows their lack of reality. The mayor (if he truly represented those in his town) should have created an alternative site for the protestors to be (with their stuff), until the park was cleaned. After which, allow them back (unless the owner of the park was builing 20 foot tall walls around it). Regardless, American citizen's 'Freedom of Assembly' under the 1st Amendment has been clearly ignored. If peaceful Americans protesting can be easily pushed and bullied, what does that say for other protestors whom are more violent in nature (and alot LESS patient with those that have their rights violated clearly)?

Didn't this situation arise a few weeks ago? And the protestors went and cleaned the whole park up to standards BETTER than the washing company hired for the job. Those protestors did it in good faith. Seems the mayor didn't wish to give the protestors a second chance to do the same. The surprise raid simply shows how un-American those police officers are. It says even more of the people that direct their actions.

For a long time, I've held the police officers of New York City with deep respect (because of 9/11); now it seems they are lowering themselves to the same level as the GOP. The moment the police lose the respect of the citizens, is the same moment the police's job becomes infinitly harder.

Just got this email via the OWS Outreach team I belong to .... It's possible that they either have an OWS friendly park owned by church groups who are PRO-OWS as a fallback...I still think they should take back Liberty Plaza and bitch slap Bloomberg and his PD.

"From Beka:

Folks jumped the fence and cut the locks, several hundred inside now.  We have erected structures inside the new fenced off park. The structures are modular houses whose facades are made of scanned blow-up photos of love letters to OWS that came in with care packages from around the country.
Please come provide witness, so we can hold the park in the public eye. Bring cameras to document. Spread the word.
Zuccotti is currently double barricaded with heavy police presence and at least 2 arrests.  Help hold this new park in the meantime.

It is owned by Trinity Church's real estate development firm, called Global Strategies.  A coalition of NYC clergy leaders have come out in support of OWS taking the space and are calling on Trinity to give it to us.
The park is across the street from Duarte Square, a public park.  It is also next to another park, so lots of open space there for GAs.  Also a major traffic corridor - by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, and not a residential area.  Local Community Board 2 has been very supportive of OWS."

I wonder whats more noxious, the fumes from the Holland Tunnel or the stench from an OWS encampment.

Holland Tunnel, lmao, if they got any further from Wall Street they'll be in the Hudson River, with no Sully to save them.

But you don't get to call up your buddy the judge, because you have her cell phone, and get her to rule for you. At 6:30 am.

Judges get assigned by a computer program.

and Billings, (and wow what an ugly bitch, you libs sure are lookers) is ineligble....

real news, 5 minutes actually reading about this stuff would teach you.

The police began clearing the park at approximately 1 am. Later this morning a judge issued a temporary restraining order after the National Lawyers Guild and others asked for an injunction. The court said the city couldn’t keep protesters and their belongings out of the park. There are reports the state’s Supreme Court will rule later today on whether or not the temporary restraining order is maintained.
