I found He's actually really good about letting me know when he wants to potty, he will come up to me, and stand there, and not that he doesn't do that anyway, but if he was previously comfy and or asleep , I assume he wants to potty and I take him out. Every time I have done so, he's had to pee, so I'm letting him tell me, not me tell him. He was not, in fact. He was left with to many ear infections that had not been treated and caused a lot of damage to his ear canals, so the vet at Homeward bound had to do bi lateral ear surgery to take out his ear canals, these surgeries unfortunately leave the poor babies deaf but are necessary due to all the damage from un treated ear infections. He was someone's dog and a neighbor noticed he was not being cared for and was being neglected and she got the neighbor to sign the dog over, no problem, but then she got in a motor cycle accident and broke her arm and couldn't work with or handle Bones, so she turned him over to the HBGR group. I found that out really quickly, this morning he found a plastic drink cup from Mc D's grabbed it and walked to the bed hopped onto it, to settle in and see what he could find in the cup. I don't let him have it though, if I see him with something I take it promptly. Though I feel so bad cause this morning I sat down and bopped him in the chin with my knee as I was taking it from him, so I am sure he thinks I bopped him to correct him. He'll get over it:D he picked up a non trash box package I had sitting at eye level and quickly dropped it once he figured out it wasn't food or something he could tear up, and I praised him. Actually I did read this morning, that they recommend crate training, and crating, if you need a bit of a break from supervising your dog, for what e ver reason, or you're going to leave him alone and if you don't have a crate call the volunteer director and she'll get one you may borrow. I am still going to give him a chance to settle down and not be a nut over night, before I crate him for bedtime. I too want to walk dogs in harnesses not collars, it's far better if they're a bit pulley, while learning not to be, than a collar, because even though a lot of people say these no slip collars will not choke or bother the dog, the truth is, heavy pullers who are like FREEEEEEEEEDOM TAKE ME FOR A WALK, pull pull pull! WILL start to pant and gasp a bit from it pressing on their throats, I've always thought that was kind of cruel, honestly, how would we like being desperate to get out and stretch and someone had put something on our necks that pushed on us and made us wheeze. Someone wrote on his file that he needs a gentle leader, and from what I understand they feel the correction and direction on their faces, and it's much, much more effective in directing them.. quote:
ORIGINAL: LafayetteLady Was he born deaf? How did he come to be in the shelter, the circumstances of his no longer having an owner? Goldens are smart and dumb, lol. HUGE garbage hounds, so yea, watch the food and the garbage, he will go in there. The vibrating collar sounds like a "must," but even though my examples may have been a bit odd, until you can save for one, rigging something up may be a good way to go. I found this site: Vibrating Dog Collars for DEAF Dogs And the cheapest collar they listed was about $200.00, however, they did supply directions for making your own. Actually that entire site is devoted to deaf animals, I'm sure it will be helpful. Ask the shelter where you work if you can borrow a crate for a bit while you train him. Since you know he is already thinking of taking food, a crate is going to be a "must" for when no one can be in the house with him. Also look on Ebay and Craiglist to see if you can find one that is inexpensive. You might even find someone giving a crate away on Craigslist. If you were in my area, I could have gotten you a crate to use in a heartbeat. Consider using a harness to walk him instead of a collar. Since he is deaf, and you want to get a vibrating collar, a harness could make it easier for him to learn to walk on a leash properly while allowing the (vibrating) collar, once you get one to be specific to other things. Remember, even if Bones "fights" you over training a bit, he really will be happier with structure than without. The getting up in the middle of the night *could* be him adjusting, but it also *could* be part of you being a new "mommy." He is loving all the attention and going out every twenty minutes, so when you go to bed, you aren't doing either and he is telling you he want to, so give that some thought every time that nervous mommy thing rears its ugly head. quote:
e "nervous" and let him out every twenty minutes, he will come to expect it. Not a good thing or productive thing with an animal.
