ORIGINAL: tazzygirl But arent you complaining about teachers? You stated something about them feeling "entitled". quote:
If they choose to stay on their own, kudos to them. We all do it. For all of our professions. In my profession we arent allowed to work off the clock. Even by choice. Yes - duly noted. In fact, paraprofessionals who work side by side with teachers are often bound by those same clock restrictions. "All" wasn't the right word. quote:
I've worked plenty of weekends and nights and didn't see any extra. Are they heroes because they do it too? Well, then, I want a parade, please, since I spend many hours each week volunteering with and for children on my own time. And this last part speaks to how you truly feel about teachers. Im sorry.. I wont agree with you. I find your snark on this topic a little over the top. I do have an attitude about it, I know. Everybody has their hot buttons, and I suppose this is one of mine. But I don't think what I said has anything to do with my feelings about teachers, but rather, about how others put teachers on pedestals. It's quite politically incorrect to say that teachers don't deserve more than they're already getting. As I said in the start, I don't think they're overpaid, either. I'm not saying that the ones that do make the higher salaries don't deserve them. I think, though, that they are fairly compensated. I will sincerely apologize for snark, but I do stand by my opinion. quote:
For arguments sake, though? Let's say I'm wrong. Let's say each teacher is expected to spend $500 on supplies every year. (At 50 teachers in a school, that's a large amount of tangible supplies in an ever-growing technological classroom, but that's beside the point.) The salary is now $49,500. My opinion of the fairness of that salary still stands. Pretax. IF they can itemize, they may be able to write some of that off. Im not expected to spend 500 a year on my supplies. I can, easily, to my own benefit. But I am not expected to buy band-aids, thermometers, bp cuffs, syringes, ect ect ect. But its ok for teachers to supplement the materials they need to teach properly? That has never made any sense to me. I was kind of trying to pull it off of the discussion of the purchase of supplies. I can say, with 100% surety, that teachers in my area are not expected or required to buy authorized supplies without reimbursement. I can say that until I'm blue in the face, though. It really doesn't mean that somebody isn't going to know somebody who didn't get reimbursed. So I was trying to say that, let's just take that out of the equation and say that teachers do have to purchase their own supplies. I still believe they're fairly compensated.
