I hate it when a party comes in who you know will either stiff you, or leave no more then a dollar no matter what the bill. And the servers have to fight amongst eachother as to who will take them and use up their turn in the rotation. :(

Not all of us Canadians, Marc. I vastly OVERtip unless the service is tremendously bad AND it's due to the server.

As someone who dislikes absolutes, I'm willing to grant some exceptions but we'd get a lot of Canadians coming over the border to prowl our malls, cigarette shops and doctor offices and the vast majority of them were lousy tippers (and those who did would often tip in Candian money which, back then, might as well have been monopoly money on our side of the border).

Tips tip tips...what a crock of crap... why not just pay a decent wage and forget the tipping?

Hell I don't even know all the different things to tip for... I was on a trip with my daughter and we got on a shuttle bus in the long term parking lot. I lugged the luggage on the bus and put it on the rack and sat down for a ride to the terminal.

When there my daughter said...now be sure to tip the driver a few bucks for each piece of luggage.... For what ...I had to take the luggage off the rack myself?... I got a dirty look but hell no service was provided other than the 5 minute drive.

This was in Colorado and we were paid $2.15 an hour and no one was under the table. This company was fantastic and we had savings plans, insurance and the whole bit. But because they didn't want anything to cause any trouble... they automatically took the taxes out on our tickets. It kept all of us safe... but was a drag when we paid on something we never received. Whether it was legal or not, I don't know. I was new to Colorado at the time and the last time I waited tables before that was in California and we got minimum wage plus tips and took care of our own taxes... or lies in most cases. There were a few decades between my serving tables in these states though. lol

Ah, I misunderstood what you meant. You mean that since you were on the books, they taxed you based on sales. Yea, most places do that, although now with the computers, it is almost automatic. The up side is that it tends to take out 8%, and you are typically making at least 15%. While it sucks on the times you get shitty or no tips, at the end of the week, it tends to even out. And by doing that, you would qualify for unemployment or disability benefits at a rate that was at least more liveable.

I wouldn't have tipped for that either! Would be different if the guy actually loaded/unloaded the luggage for you, but he got paid to drive.

Having waitressed in my younger days (oh, the horror) I am a pretty generous tipper.  In fact, I think that is pretty common for people who have lived off tips to be generous.  However, I also think that it is pretty ridiculous that customers are expected to subsidize wages.  Why not just pay a livable wage?

Matter of interest, what are you supposed to tip a cabbie out there?

Here in the UK the standard tip is 10%, rounded up, pretty much wherever and whenever a tip is ordinarily given.

I sometimes will go to a Hotel to grab a cab... faster here. I will tip the doorman if he hails one for me a dollar... another for opening the door.. and there is no luggage.

But he did provide services that he didn't have to, i.e. hailing the cab for you. It is his job, however, to hold open the door. Or did you mean the door to the cab?

Door to the cab... the doormen around here are very nice even to walk ups for cabs.

See tazzy not being from a large city or have reason to visit them often I would be at a loss as to when and how much to tip. I am not alone...often people just don't know what is expected and look cheap... That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Server salaries went from 2.13 to 2.53 an hour, here in PA in 2009. While the rest of the minimum wage workers got an increase in 2007 to 5.85, tipped employees stayed at 2.13

we have black cab firms here that are hail and ride, or small firms where you have to book. from the train station to my house is £3.50 fixed price in a booked cab and £4.20 in a black cab depending on what route they take. at first i didn't take any notice of things as i was just concentrating on getting home. however, i realised that the black cabs were taking the longer route and it was costing me at least £5. now they all have route finders but i should think that all of them are well awear of the quicker and cheaper route to my house. so now i get in and tell them 'i'm giving you £5 and that is all, it's totally up to you whether you get the tip or not. amazingly all have taken the quicker route.

in his experiance the best tippers are the ones with the least money.

In my experience it is the middle class, particularly the lower middle class, that are the best tippers. They get it. The very poor (old people on SS or Welfare recipients) and the very wealthy (not that they took cabs very often, but sometimes they did) were the worst.

In fairness, it should be noted that there were exceptions both ways.

It also has been my experience. More years ago than I care to recount, I was to get tips. The wealthy tip almost nothing. Most (not all) wealthy Americans are greedy and believe with their sense of entitlement, they are owed good service, tip or no tip.

The middle and poor tip because they much more identify with the modern American economic struggle.

Rule of thumb here is 15% in restaurants. With other services i am not aware of any differing guidelines. Those working in the service industries i notice tend to tip more.

I tend to follow a sliding scale while keeping the 15% in mind. If service is superb and the person pleasant i tip well in excess. If service and pleasant attitude are lacking i do not hesitate to tip below the norm or perchance not tip at all. Also if  kitchen staff or a secondary person goes above and beyond i typically tip them as well or at very least give compliment.

Was surprised to hear we Canucks tend to be lousy tippers and surprised with the lower wage scale segment being poor tippers. Here it is typical those with less income tip better than those with greater income.

Most times i tip and even with services where tipping is the not the norm. That being said, i feel no obligation to tip where service or attitude is below par. A tip to me is a gratuity of appreciation... not my feeling obligated to subsidize someones wage.

Good point Marc2b regarding new employees still in the learning phase!

For most of these I thought "that's it!!?" I tip much higher.
