Iamsemisweet -> Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 10:21:43 AM)

The following, and two similar postings, were posted on my Facebook this weekend.  Now, I am not a Christian, but this doesn't seem like a very "christian" attitude to me.  Am I missing something?  My question is, who is stopping these people from saying ":Merry Christmas"?  And what is it that they are so pissed off about?

:
quote:

[/WHAT A CROCK OF Bull..... We can't say Merry Christmas now we have to say Happy Holidays. We can't call it a Christmas tree, it's now called a Holiday tree? Because it might offend someone. If you don't ike OUR "Customs" and it offends you so much then GO HOME. I will help you pack. You aren't worried about offending ME, are you? They are called customs and we have our traditions. If you agree with this please post this as your status! I AM A PROUD AMERCIAN CITIZEN... MERRY CHRISTMAS. Do you have what it takes to repost this? God IS Christmas and a part of my daily life. "In God We Trust." Amen. quote]

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 10:25:20 AM)

Here is another one that I was blessed with.  Seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people?  Do they really believe that if you aren't Christian, you can't celebrate Christmas?

quote:

DO NOT CARE IF THIS DOES OFFEND SOMEONE… AND IF IT DOES, DELETE ME PLEASE :) THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE…I AM SICK AND TIRED OF EVERY YEAR WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES AROUND; THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TAKE CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS BECAUSE IT MIGHT OFFEND SOMEONE…WELL, HOW ABOUT ALL OF THE CHRISTIANS?...WHAT ABOUT OFFENDING US BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKING OUR CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS?...CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS!...IF YOU AREN'T CELEBRATING CHRIST THEN WHY ARE YOU CELEBRATING?...CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOR!...CHRISTMAS IS ONE OF A FEW HOLIDAYS LEFT THAT CELEBRATE "MY" CHRIST!...LEAVE "MY" HOLIDAY ALONE!...AND TELL EVERYONE MERRY CHRISTMAS, NOT HAPPY HOLIDAYS!...RE-POST IF YOU’RE

tazzygirl -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 10:26:01 AM)

I would be curious to know a bit about the poster. Sadly, I know many of that belief. I still say Merry Christmas... not because that is my mindset, the one you are referring too... but because thats what is special to me as a person, something I want to wish someone else. I do not get upset when someone says to me Happy Holidays.

To me, if I were to go around wanting to say one, but felt like I had to say the other, what am I really wishing people? Something that doesnt mean much to me.

A phrase my grandpa used to say comes to mind "He/she would bitch if you hung em with a new rope!"

Some people just are not happy unless they have something to bitch about. I ignore those people.

Ok, all the yelling text hurts my eyeballs.

This is bunk. I come from a household that is both Jewish and Christian. I had a christmas tree so...yeah, whatever.

No, that is NOT christian-like behavior. Period.

This is just my opinion, but many people who push the Christian angle are really the antithesis of what a christian is supposed to be: accepting, nurturing, compassionate, nonjudemental.

Those posts dont display any of those qualities. Quite sad, really.

I didnt see this part of your post... sorry.

Many companies are telling their employees not to say Merry Christmas anymore.

For example...

When the Wal-Mart corporate offices answered my call I asked them "Is it true that Wal-Mart is restricting the use of the phrase "Merry Christmas" in their stores?"

She answered "Yes. We have given notice that the words Happy Holidays should be said in place of Merry Christmas."

I asked "Why would Wal-Mart do this?"

She said, "Because not everyone celebrates Christmas. We don't want to offend anyone."

I asked "What would happen to someone that said Merry Christmas?"

"To who?" she said.

I asked again "What would happen to a customer if they said Merry Christmas and what would happen to an employee if they said Merry Christmas first?"

She hesitated and said "I don't think anything would happen to a customer."

I asked again "What will happen to an employee?"

She hesitated again before saying "I don't think they will be fired." But what will happen? Will they be wrote up?" "I don't know. I don't think anything will happen to them."

I asked, "Isn't it a bit hypocritical to sell and make lots of money off of any item that has to do with Christmas, religion, angels, crosses, books out of your Bible or Spirituality center, and even the Easter baskets?"

She said "I understand."

When I asked who decided that Happy Holidays should be said, she asked me to hold on a minute. When she came back on, she apologized for placing me on hold and I said that it was ok.

I asked again who decided this, she replied "The higher ups."

I asked "Who exactly decided this? Surely there must have been a board of directors or someone that specifically decided. Who was these people?"

She said "Well, Lee Scott for one."

Are they also concerned that Sharia law is gaining a foothold in the US and think that Obama is a Muslim?

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2010/08/31/why-the-belief-that-obama-is-muslim.html

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, to paraphrase Mencken, but the widespread belief that Obama is Muslim has even cynics grasping for explanations. The new NEWSWEEK Poll (scroll down to Question 17) found that 24 percent of those surveyed said Obama is Muslim, something that Jonathan Alter, in our cover story this week, attributes to the fact that “more and more voters don’t like him personally and so are increasingly ready to believe anything critical (and to them, being Muslim is a negative) about someone they are already inclined to resent.” This “associational distortion,” Jon argues, is fed by the tacit endorsement of the Republican leadership. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for instance, said about Obama’s religion, “I take the president at his word.” Somehow McConnell couldn’t bring himself to state the truth that the guy went to a Christian church in Chicago, was married in a Christian ceremony, is raising his daughters as Christians, and is a practicing Christian.

Im in no way sticking up for the people in Iam's posts. They make a mockery of what they claim they stand for.

littlewonder -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 10:48:05 AM)

I have friends on FB who post those little anecdotes every single day. I just ignore them. While I am a Christian I do find those to be annoying.

I admit though that within the last few weeks while out shopping I've had this happen to me twice and it saddened me.....I was out shopping and both times the cashier went to say "Happy Thanksgiving" and only got out Happy Thank....." and then said "I'm sorry, happy holidays".  [&o]

I was really a little disappointed and I understand that in a workplace they're taught to be politically correct but I just really wish they would just say what they were going to originally say. It would have made me want to say thank you and happy Thanksgiving/Christmas in response with a genuine smile.

Happy Festivus.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 11:04:34 AM)

Yet another reason not to shop at Walmart.  Like I needed any more reasons.

Still, one store (albeit a big one) preventing their employees from saying "Merry Christmas" could hardly be considered an all out assault on Christianity.  I still don't get the anger and the attitude.

Merry Christmas.

Well, Christmas IS a Christian holiday. I had a cousin who was married to a Jewish man, and they had a Christmas tree. My father jokingly called it a "Hannuka bush" trying to integrate the two.

I don't have a huge issue with people saying "Happy Holidays" instead of Merry Christmas or Happy Hannuka, but things are getting out of hand.

I have another cousin who was the head of a local Board of Ed. After 9/11, on the marquee for the high school was posted, "our prayers to the families/victime of 9/11" (or something of that nature). Someone called and complained that it was offensive to atheists, so he removed it (and took flak for that as well). It didn't mention "God" or who anyone might pray to, and it was the spirit of the message to the families and victims.

I get emails all the time from someone I was friends with when I lived in Florida. Most are against Obama, for prayer, etc. I delete them and find them all obnoxious.

It really shouldn't matter to anyone if someone says Merry Christmas, Happy Hannuka, or Happy Holidays. People should take it in the spirit in which the comment is made.

So, MissAsylum, Happy Hannumas!

Merry Christmas.

Its not just one store though.

I dont go to walmart because most of the black friday junk seems to happen at their stores. Its always about the money, nothing else. "Made in America" went to "Money in America, Made everywhere else"

FB is full of kids, many will repost whatever they think will get responses or a rise out of people. FB is also full of religious fantatics.

I just go there to play the games.

The man is Jewish... he set up the Christmas tree last year. The ties he wears for work at this time of year are a mixture of Christmas themes and Jewish ones... lol... I love the dreidel one he wears.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 11:20:05 AM)

I have about a million reasons why I would never shop at Walmart.  Their employees saying "Happy Holidays" as opposed to Merry Christmas will never be one of them.

I don't have a lot of kids for FB friends, and I really didn't know it was full of religious fanatics.  Guess the conclusion here is that I need a better quality of FB friends, and I need to clear out my friend list.  One of these posts was from a woman I knew from High School, and the other is from a business contact.

favesclava -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 11:21:29 AM)

its ok to wish me a merry Christmas. Master uses the quote from tv Dharma's dad . dont know it exactly but its along the lines of enjoy the holiday of your chossing if indeed you choose to celebrate .
I'm a Wiccan. i love the holidays . we even celebrate the Epiphany on Jan 6.
a side note. i work at a Christian nursing home. we have a Sheperds Watch. staff will read from the bible, lead prayers and escort the deceased to the hearse. i'm in charge of the Sheperds Watch on 3rd shift when i work.why? Because none of the Christians that work this shift want to.

I used to reply with snopes debunking of urban legends and eventually was dropped from their email forward list.

LaTigresse -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 11:43:29 AM)

You know, I am firmly of the belief that we can all appreciate and 'celebrate' what is important to others, regardless of whether or not is similar to our own belief system. I can tell someone to have a happy birthday, even though it is not my birthday, so why can't I tell them to have a merry christmas??? Or whatever holiday it is.

The author is being nice. I think everyone with a brain knows why most of those people believe Obama is a muslim. It has to do with the melanin concentration in his skin.

Moonhead -> RE: Pissed off Christians (11/28/2011 12:01:43 PM)

The weird thing about that, of course, is that it's often the same people who believe that teh Kenyan is a Mooslim who won't shut up about his connection to a racist preacher who's zealously priming them blacks for the coming race war. Last time I checked, the pastor in question was a baptist, not a Mooslim.
I suppose you have to have achieved some sort of baseline of intelligence before cognitive dissonance can become a problem...
