Jack Nicholson was in The Shining. The Green Mile was a series of small books, I think there were six of them. The Stand and It were a couple of my favorites.

Gerald's game is about bondage. Only ok.

Insomnia didn't get really good until around page 400, lol.

I had borrowed "Carrie" from my local library. It was King's first book. I read it years ago, like in high school, but I go on kicks with some books that I like to re-read them. It was a first print edition, and it was hysterical to read the "about the author" page. He was still working as a teacher, lol.

A lot of King's books take a while to get going (but then they are lately 900 pages as you said this one is), but once they get going, then they really get going.

Personally, I loved the Dark Tower series and I don't like sci fi stuff at all, but I would recommend it. The Dark Half and Dolores Claiborne are really good as well.

Holy Shit! I was just looking at his bibliography and there is a new Dark Tower book! Now I have to re-read the whole damn series since it was supposedly finished in 2004 and I certainly can't remember that long ago.

Did I mention I'm a fan of his books?

Mike- I'm the same way...I love the book in hand. I've read a couple on my iPad, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be..but it just doesn't compare to the feeling of holding a book and just turning technology off for a bit, you know?

Add me to that list. My housemate gave me a digital copy of "Lord Of The Flies" (another great book) and I haven't really read it because I can't hold it in my hand.

So do I but I have a whole lot of pain in my right thumb (having surgery in April just to give you an idea) and holding books can be really painful. Given a choice I would still be buying books. I really miss holding an actual book and if the surgery works I'll go back to reading books.

my reading of that was that Aynne was referring to the Stand....but as I get deeper into 11/22/63...I might just suggest she is wrong....lol(of course it would behoove me to actually read theStand before putting forth that argument....lol)

I'm about 3/4 through and am enjoying it. I'm a - selective -King fan and have always loved and been fascinated by time travel fiction and am happy to see him take on this genre. One thing I like about this story is the 2 minute aspect - no matter how long you stay back in the rabbit-hole only 2 minutes have passed when you return but you've aged whatever amount of time you were gone. Anyone who's seen the film version of The Time Machine(which is very, very different from the book) will recall that the traveler was gone for a week and returned to the present exactly a week later, right on time for his appointment and he'd aged a week. This isn't a spoiler - I have no idea how this book ends. Repeat - this is not a spoiler. I'm predicting that he fails in preventing the assassination, makes his way back to the rabbit-hole and returns to present day Maine, does some research and finds that he did an equal amount of good and bad in interfering with the past, then goes back for another try. I wish his buddy hadn't died back in the present so, if nothing else, he could have immediately returned so they could debate what the death of the drunk in the alley means(definitely a bad omen).

It happens that I read Under the Dome before this. I bought and started reading 11/22/63 the day after finishing Dome and hadn't read two books by King back to back in many years. Coincidentally, it was the last book he published before this one(though he did release a book of stories between the two books, which I haven't yet read). My only quibble with that one was I'd hoped for a more satisfying showdown with the villain. Actually, there was no showdown. That was disappointing.

One definition of a good read...when you want to choke the main characters neck.When you are so invested in what happens to this character that you,far more than the author,just KNOW what he should do.

Finished it.The New York Times placed this book in it's top five fiction books of the year,I disagree,it is the best fiction I have read in the last five years....easy,and folks I read a lot of damm books.
Read this book,it is a fantastic,exhilirating and enjoyable ride through history, fantasy and just what might be or might have been.

I'm not done yet but I agree. One of the advantages of having an eReader is that he has been writing novellas specifically for eReaders. I just downloaded the most recent one, looks like a good read

Took the nephew to the library last night,I specifically remember seeing a copy of Blockade Billy there...so I'm not sure that was written "specifcally for eReaders"...perhaps it was just (2010) released for ereaders

The copy I saw looked well worn and well read,but it is a library,some folks just don't care for the books all that well...never noticed the publication date.

By the way anyone else notice James Patterson's new,and very cheezy,Nook reader commercail for Barnes and Noble.
In the commercial we see a trench wearing man viciously kick open a door and run thru it,than in a choppy cheezy looking cut the camera switches to Patterson himself coming through that door ...a James Patterson who looks like even thinking of attempting such a violent kick would land him in an emergeancy room.Not a good look for Mr.Patterson,not at all....lol.

<frowns> okay I thought it was written for eReaders forgot to check the publication date. How the fuck did it slip under my radar? I DO know he's written one called Mile 81. AWESOME novella!

I think I'm going to put this on my Christmas book wish list. I want some big fat novels I can
dive into and not look up til spring.
I'm impressed that the Times put it in their
top five. I wonder if that has happened before
to a King book.
You know a few years ago King was talking
about the possibility he might retire from
writing. He expressed some anxiety that his
powers as a writer were diminishing and he
didn't want to repeat himself and put out
mediocre or below par books. He said this
not long after he had been nearly killed
by that guy who ran over him while he
out walking. I don't know if he was dealing
with the trauma of what happened to him
or was going through a bad patch of
anxiety all artists go through.
But how great after going through what
must have been a challenging time for
him to have produced a book the Times
singled out like they have.
I think King's best book is Salem's Lot.
There are some very scary ass moments
in that book and it's very well written.
I also like It, Misery and the Shining.
On Halloween TCM showed a hour long
special with King talking about horror
movies. He talked about movies based
on his books as well as others. It was
interesting. He talked some about his
differences with Kubrick concerning The
Shining.
Also I think it's A&E is showing a movie
based on Bag of Bones starring Pierce
Brosnan this month.

I would be surprised if this is the first time he has made that list. I remember when he said he had maybe two or three good books left in him. Personally I think the books he has written since then have been some of his best work. My favorite (well one of them) is It. I think he was pure evil making people terrified of clowns - and I'm STILL scared of them even though I first read it when it came out. BASTARD!

I finished it a couple days ago. It went in directions I wasn't expecting / suspecting, and my prediction earlier in this thread was completely wrong. A satisfying King read, for me.

I liked the book and was going to DVR Bag of Bones but I'm seriously sick and tired of being disappointed by film or TV adaptations of King. I didn't like the trailers, I really, really don't like Pierce Brosnan, I didn't like the looks of the female protagonist(though I love Anabelle Gish - she's been good in anything I've seen her in and she's hot, besides). I'm passing on this one.
