HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 3:29:51 PM)

What I find hard to understand is why it would matter to a person what somebody else believes in regards to religion, which is why I place the blame for the believers' antipathy on their suspension of reason. They are able to feel the way they do because they are deliberately operating irrationally.

tazzygirl -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 3:30:58 PM)

It is irrational to you.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 3:45:24 PM)

No, it is irrational. Not just to me, but to the English speaking world. Look the word up, you'll see it is the correct word to use, it means "Not consistent with or using reason".

tazzygirl -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 3:48:13 PM)

They are using reason. Just not one you understand.

Yes tazzy, whatever you say. [8|]

So its your contention that there is only one "right" reason?

Okay, I'll be more specific.

Discussing someone else's actions, instead of the topic, is not allowed.
Pointing out to someone else that they are off topic is, in itself, off topic and not allowed.
Discussing moderator actions on a thread is off topic and is not allowed.

http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=3946289

There are 5 forms of reasoning. Insisting that someone is operating irrationally, may or may not be true. Insisting someone is doing so deliberately, again, may or may not be true.

As Master Kirata pointed out, there is a lack of ability for either side to prove, or disprove, the reasoning of the other group. That seems to be causing much of the problems.

Instead of attacking someone's reasoning... with comments like "They are able to feel the way they do because they are deliberately operating irrationally. " .. which will immediately put anyone into a position of not wanting to listen... try other approaches.

This one isnt working.

On the contrary, its working perfectly.

tazzygirl -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 6:07:02 PM)

If it was working so perfectly, atheists wouldnt be complaining about studies such as these.

I want to point out that the survey does NOT say anything about what "Christians" feel, only "religious" people, without reference to what religion.

I haven't plowed through the study - do they break it down by religion?

http://www2.psych.ubc.ca/~will/Gervais%20et%20al-%20Atheist%20Distrust.pdf

Reported religious affiliations included

Christian (67%),
Jewish (1%),
Atheist2 (3%),
Agnostic (4%),
“None” (17%), and
“Other” (9%).

On a binary Yes/No question assessing belief in God, 14% (n 49) indicated that they did not believe in God.

tazzygirl -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 6:10:14 PM)

I have a few issues with the study, kalika.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 6:12:38 PM)

What does what atheists complain about have to do with me or anything I have said? When did this thread become about the best way for atheists to get a more favourable response from theists? I thought it was about the the survey that showed that theists don't trust atheists.

tazzygirl -> RE: Atheists have a PR problem (12/3/2011 6:15:46 PM)

If you bring a problem to the table, without a possible solution, then you are merely part of the problem.

What I find hard to understand is why it would matter to a person what somebody else believes in regards to religion, which is why I place the blame for the believers' antipathy on their suspension of reason. They are able to feel the way they do because they are deliberately operating irrationally.

You made the above statement... and assumption on your part. If you didnt want it to be open to discussion.......

I don't know, nor does it really matter given the percentages in the sample group. Further, based on that 67%, my statement <which was based on the info available in the article posted by the OP> is pretty much rendered null anyway.

Doesn't fundamentally change anything though.

I didn't realize I had mentioned a problem that needed a solution.

What on earth gave you that idea?

Your evasion of questions related to your statement.
