They suffer.

But life is about more than that so they carry on and attempt to be the best person they can be while looking for a partner.

Just so you know, this answer works for dom or sub or whatever. It's all the same people. Everyone just wants someone to love and to be loved in return.

If you don't have that, work on being lovable. What else {positive} can anyone do?

Otherwise, if the Dom was in a relationship with the sub, I guess s/he takes a bit of a break from relationships and after awhile starts to look again for that special someone of fill the role of sub. I'm just guessing.

My sex toy collection tends to zero. Unused toys still in their wrapping are put in random strangers letterboxes.
I don't leave work early, or take midday phone calls that leave me too aroused to do work. Any staff that were borderline get fired. My productivity goes up.
I do things on the weekend that I can tell strangers about afterwards.
I go on vanilla dates
I use less capitalization.
I spell twue as true
My sex chocolate consumption drops, so does my weight
I replace my leather waistcoat with an Hawaiian shirt
I swap the leather jack boots, for sandals and white socks.

Then I meet a bad influence or two, get corrupted and the vicious cycle starts all over again.

Really? Is that what it's like for you?

I wouldn't ever say that not having a partner is suffering. It's just...not having a partner. You make it sound like a person can't be complete without one. That's certainly not true for everyone.
