PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The pastor at a Kentucky church says he will nullify a vote taken by members of his congregation that bans interracial couples.

The move comes after Stepp, who says he opposed the policy, asked for advice from the Sandy Valley Conference of Free Will Baptists.

The conference met Saturday and issued a statement saying it had determined there weren't enough members voting in favor of the proposal, which would require a change in church bylaws. The vote last week at the church, which has about 40 people who attend, was 9-6.

I know you edited for space - I know of my mother's Unitarian Universalist LGBT outreach.

ETA - not to say that there ISN'T a problem with churches being anti-gay, just that there are options.

Harville said many people left or declined to vote.

Sounds like not everyone left. Why you wouldnt vote against something you dont believe in, is beyond me. Then again, knowing small towns, there could be more here than meets the eye.

I am not contesting that, GS. Nor was that the point I was addressing. Many people, within and outside of religion, oppose gay relationships. The same is true about interracial relationships.

Are there really many non-religious people who oppose gay relationships?

I agree with you on that, I certainly wouldn't paint the UU's and the KKKwith the same brush.

Do you believe only religious people are homophobic?

Well, in any kind of significant numbers, yes that is my understanding. I'm not aware of a decent secular argument for homophobia the atheist community at large isn't either. We've been backing gay rights and the large organizations have been looking for a alliance with gay rights groups for a while now. Sadly atheists are way too hated for GLBT organizations to want anything to do with us.

I think that with regard to gay marriage there is likely to be more "religious" angst about it than with atheists. but fear and ignorance is sure as hell not restricted to believers"

distasteful as it may be they have the right to do whatever they want in that respect.

At least until they discover they are a 501.3.c and the nazis stomp in and end that little party and the people have no clue how they could do it LOL

I didnt say the movement didnt back gay marriage. In fact, many religious groups do too.

This.
I think it's quite common that the overwhelming majority of people will passively accept bigotry. It's that "go along to get along" thing, particularly in close-knit groups such as small towns.

The fascinating aspect of this affair is not that those 9 unXstians are bigoted; it's that they were willing to publicly display their intolerance in this day and age, nearly 50 years after the Civil Rights Act.

Racism is very much alive in the South (and the US, and the world), but it's not usually so overtly expressed.

It might be useful to distinguish between homophobia operating at a political or ideological level - which has a good probability of being religiously-inspired - and that operating at everyday level - where homophobic behaviour and attitudes can be held by just about anyone.

It's difficult to generalise here. The old Soviet style regimes were extremely homophobic and enforced harsh anti-GLBT legal regimes for instance, while Western Marxists were in the main, pro-GLBT. OTOH it's undeniable that institutions such as the Catholic Church have led (and continue to lead) anti-GLBT opposition, while many individual Catholics courageously promoted GLBT agendas.

Some religious organisations and some individuals (who claim to operate from a religious base/motivation) work very hard to get a bad rep on this issue - they have opposed just about every advance for GLBT people, and other sexual minorities, since the year dot.

On that, you will not find me in disagreement. The broad brush stroke that often accompanies this, and other topics, is getting rather ridiculous.

And if we want to take it a little further let's talk about every major church and their aversion to gays.

Just wanted to stand up here and say that synagogues by and large are pretty LGBT friendly (note that I'm excluding the hidebound Orthodox here, and I'm referring to Reform and Conservative congregations).  My congregation's rabbi is active in local LGBT groups, and we have had two gay couples visit (they opted to not join although they were welcomed when they came).

Well, that's good to hear, but you have to admit that most religions are vociferously anti-gay.

Broad brush stroke my ass:

Catholic church caught in new row over gay marriages

Church of Scotland rejects proposals to legalise gay marriage

How lost is the institutional Church today?

Want to see more?  Because I can keep posting these links from different churches all day.

Of course you can. What you won't be posting are the quiet churches who serve everyone regardless of sexual orientation or race. They are quietly doing God's work. There are many of them.

Really?

Then show me.

And while you are at it you can explain to me what "God's work" is.

Does he give you a paycheck for doing his work?

They're everywhere. You have to go to them. They don't advertise with huge signs. We have a church here in Louisville that welcomes all faiths. What an interesting concept! Another that is largely gay and lesbian, but they too, welcome everyone. I suspect they aren't only here but everywhere. (or we're just darn lucky)
